Is being a part of what would essentially be a weak Group of Five conference even be a possibility?
How about: join the BigTen, go independent, drop to FCS (where we could actually get serious Director's Cup points), or just drop football altogether?

I will always support our student-athletes but realistically it would be very hard for me to muster up interest in athletic contests as a member of the Mountain West. If people think the Stanford fan base is apathetic now, just wait till they see turnouts for games against the likes of Utah State and Nevada.

I would just drop football. It would have meant more 2 years ago as a protest to lack of action on concussions and the pandemic. Now Stanford is coming from a place of weakness so the statement means less and can be discredited. But it’s still the right thing to do. High level football is no longer consistent with Stanford’s values.

I'm not sure what Stanford's values are anymore, except administrative excess and granite and sandstone edifices . . . .

I think the top options now are to go independent or, if they invited to the big 18/20, to join that.
I used to be strongly opposed to joining the big 10 and used to mock usc/ucla’s choice, but at this point, there are already 4 west coast teams, and if Stanford and cal are invited, that’d be a 6 team west coast pod, which could reduce travel, which was my greatest concern for student athletes.
If the big 18/20 deal doesn’t materialize or isn’t good, Stanford is one of the few schools in the country that could go independent. Presuming the pac-8/Apple+ deal now won’t go through, I could totally see Apple+ bankrolling an independent Stanford. There’s an audience fit and Stanford Athletics can sell more than enough Apple+ subscriptions.
No the university should not poll students, athletes and coaches, this is not a democracy. The university, by definition, is supposed to make decisions for the university. You might sometimes disagree with their decisions, but that’s their job.

While a poll of current athletes would be interesting I strongly disagree that athlete opinions should be more decisive than other stakeholders - Alumni (heck, many here have been ardent followers for 30+ years), Students, donors, past athletes, and the local community. Many of us have a strong stake in Stanford's choice.
Many of our current athletes will have graduated (or transferred) before the full effect of today's decisions hits home.

Unless something surprising happens, they're a mid-major now. But maybe it'll be more fun competing against the Fresno States instead of the USCs.
They've been playing like a mid-major in the money-making sports anyway. I kinda think it fits and don't have a problem with it.

Surely Oregon and Washington must give some consideration to the fact that it would be easier for them to make a football playoff out of a weakened P8 or P10 than an 18 team Big 10.

You e made the Covid point a couple of times and since I have liked many of your previous posts, I want to understand this point. Not to argue because that would get us into a political arena I fear. My own take is that the PAC 12 and especially Stanford overreaction to the pandemic hurt the program badly. Again, not to argue but is your point that Stanford did not clamp down on athletic activity enough during the pandemic? And further than this under reaction hurt the athletic program and or the School?
Not interested in arguing this point; I just want to see if I understand it.
BTW it is about a dime in a five dollar ante poker game in terms of over all cause of failure of the PAC 12 but I have always thought our knee jerk over reaction to Covid and the strident virtue signaling hurt our programs and our schools.

Their exit means playoffs are going to have to change anyway. They can't justify a berth unless PacX conference adds ND, BYU, Memphis, TCU, and SMU.

The PacX if it exists at all would become a Gang of 5 (soon to be 6) conference. A team would have to finish in the top 4 or top 12 of the CFP rankings to qualify. A conference championship would not be enough.

Remaining college football conference realignment questions - ESPN
Here is a portion of the text in which Chip Kelly has a reasonable approach to this mess.
Quote:""Some combination of relief and begrudging acceptance. As Chip Kelly pointed out at UCLA practice Friday, as other teams scramble to figure out where they'll play in the coming years, it's nice to know where your home will be. Kelly joked that perhaps the Big Ten could put the former Pac-12 teams in a pod and the Big Ten teams in a pod and have the winners play each other at the end of the year, perhaps in the Rose Bowl. If it was up to him, though, he'd scrap the whole thing and start anew.
"I'd be for, we're all in the same division. Put 60 of us in the same division," Kelly said. "Do it like the NFL where there's NFC West, NFC north, NFC south. I think we should all be in, there should be one conference in all college football and then just break it up like they do the professional game. Based on geography. That makes the most sense. There's your travel question. There's all those other questions, but no one asks me.""

All of this is a DISASTER for the Pac 12 sports that aren't Basketball and Football.
How many teams will fold because of this?
AND WHERE THE HELL IS THE NCAA AND NEW NCAA PRESIDENT CHARLIE BAKER? Aren't they supposed to be overseeing a competitive environment for all college sports?

I think the B1G still wants to add 2 of these 3 teams (in order of priority)
-Notre Dame
-Stanford
-Cal
So nothing is likely to happen until there is more clarity in what Notre Dame will do.

Most daring insight yet on Pac12 implosion... Robber Baron Time:
"HOSTILE TAKEOVER of B1G" -- Leland would have!
Stanford just is not thinking big enough...
We have $36 BILLION Endowment as
leverage (not to "spend"). Assets, Balance sheet. Financing. Think.
B1G inked a $1 billion a year media deal last summer ($7 billion over 7 years) to start the cascading domino effect of what we are seeing now.
$MONEY. Schools desperate for cash payouts. Stanford isn't desperate.
And we have LOTS of SMART alums working in Digital Media World. K?
Compared to valuations in Silicon Valley equity and asset values, the B1G Deal is marching band toe jam. C'mon.
Example: Apple's market cap was approaching $3 TRILLION. That's right, $3T. Got it?
Today it posted a downtick on iPhone sales, and got nicked 5% in market cap, down about $180 BILLION, today
-- easily absorbing a loss that would wipe out others.
Are you following the ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE here? Capisce?
Facebook in Menlo Park is worth $800 BILLION. Google now at $1.6 TRILLION -- OK?
These numbers are large, beyond the understanding of most athletic commissioners.
So, Stanford can make a few phone calls -- Just BUY UP the B1G Conf (not the schools) and their scrawny TV deal.
Then... Stanford writes the terms. Home and away splits --
No snow games for the Cardinal. Nov / Dec in Palo Alto, got it?
Midwest moaners? USC / UCLA Traitors... Suck it.
Via Silicon Valley, we write our own NIL athlete channel deals.
Recruiting takes an uptick. C'mon -- Use your NOGGINS!

Apparently shoddy research and zero fun.
Right, however righteous Stanford's indignation will be, no one will care. Mick might have the insight here. Stanford could turn into U Chicago pretty quickly, but without fissionable material under the bleachers. Or something like that. Chicago never resonated as anything to me. I've heard of it, but whatever. Because they don't go to bowl games! (Yeah, yeah; I've heard of MIT. Almost went there, but decided to come west partly because of the Pac 10, because four years down under (the Mason-Dixon Line) had me hooked on college football and basketball. Hey, I did get 40 years out of it.
Honestly, when this calms down, The remnants of the Pac will band together and craft the strongest west coast conference possible. And it will be a Group of X conference. What a sad turn of events. I think college football is on the path to implosion. A weak sauce version of the NFL. How is that sustainable?
