Also, who does USC face in the pac-12 championship?  There could be a three-way tie at 7-2 in conference between Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Does Washington advance on account of their head-to-head win over Oregon (they didn’t play Utah)? Of course, first they have to get past WSU.

If there is a three way tie, Utah goes to the conference championship game. If Washington loses tonight, Oregon goes...At least I think that's what the announcers said during the Oregon game tonight.

Everything lines up perfectly for SC.  Makes me sick. I couldn’t stand SC prior to this season. Now, with their 19 transfers and the $ 3.5 million their fat cat supporters paid Williams and Addington, I despise them even more now.

They will slaughter whomever comes out of the North. No 3 seed, I suspect. Let’s hope Michigan kicks their ass.

Even Kirk Herbstreit (tOSU) agrees with you.

I think $¢'s a lock for the playoffs if they win the Pac. They'd have one more win than tOSU and quite a few more wins against ranked opponents.

The only conference teams that USC beat by more than one score finished in the bottom half of the league (WSU, ASU, CU, & Stanford).  they had one score margins over Oregon State, Arizona, Cal, & UCLA.  They lost to Utah (on the road) and did not play Oregon or Washington.  I think that either Oregon or Utah can be very competitive with USC.  USC can score in bunches, but their defense can give up points in bunches.

RE: Other Games this Long Weekend - Spiny_Norman - 11-26-2022

If SC wins, they’re in for a simple reason - they will have won a conference championship. Ohio State didn’t even win their division. The committee gives a lot of weight in close calls to the school with a conference title.

This might be their easiest ranking ever with Georgia, Michigan, TCU and USC as the top 4. The first 3 could lose in their conference championship games and still remain in the top 4. Not a lot of drama for next week.

Personally I would love to see USC’s offense vs Georgia’s defense. A great matchup.

How classy, an Oregon player threw a punch at an OSU fan after the game.

Utah has already beaten USC (by 1 point at Utah)

RE: Other Games this Long Weekend - Austroturf - 11-27-2022

The tiebreaker for the Pac-12 championship game is quite odd.  Since Oregon, Washington and Utah all ended up with identical records, they looked at strength of conference schedule; and Utah apparently had the stronger schedule (which included USC, UCLA, Arizona, ASU, Colorado, Stanford, Oregon State, Wazzu and Oregon).  Neither Oregon nor Washington faced USC, so that weakened their conference schedule.  Utah beat the Trojans.

In the old North-South structure, Washington would have been in the championship game.  Also, there would have been some logic in giving the Huskies the nod even in the new structure.  Among the three teams tied for second, Utah lost to one of them (Oregon), while Washington beat one of them (Oregon).  But since the Huskies and Utes never played, there was no head-to-head to break the tie.  Ergo strength of conference schedule remained to sort out the lots.  Dawg fans are certainly frustrated by this turn of events and bemoaning that inexplicable loss to the Sun Devils in Tempe.

Great to see LSU go down and end all discussion of two SEC teams in the playoff.  That said, if USC can avenge their loss to the Utes, then they are certainly in.

IMO you are exactly correct. Not having two SEC teams is a big plus. I am really torn on the USC-Utah game. It would just be so PAC-12 football that Utah beats them again. It would seem almost "normal". On the other hand, that might let Alabama, OSU or Tennessee back into the playoff, and that is so unacceptable I guess I have to support USC.

Yes, despite my inclination to hate him for leaving us and going over to the dark side, I find myself rooting for Austin Jones to have a chance to play for a NC.  Is that wrong of me?  I know his is a turn-coat-traitor-Toejam-scum, but . . .

Why?  USC, like the dog it is, lifted it’s leg and pissed all over the PAC-12. Beyond all the other reasons a Stanford fan should actively root against SC, that provides another.

Be good for the Big 10, I suppose as it waits for its West Coast cash cow.

Go Utes!

RE: Other Games this Long Weekend - Phogge - 11-27-2022

Jones did what was right for himself. If he decides to return he’ll be the featured back in an explosive offense. Plus Riley isn’t finished corralling transfers, probably a bushel of defenders. Probably national champs next year. The PAC Whatever is fortunate competitively that they are bailing.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend? It is morally repugnant, I know, but anything that would put Alabama back in the championship playoff is as well :-).

I am just waiting to watch USC get smacked around in the B1G. They will lose a couple of road games a year to good but not great competition (in cold weather, maybe in the snow) and then get destroyed by Michigan and/or tOSU. Their path to the championship series will always be blocked. It will be truly fun to watch. They will also be out of the PAC-12, which in it's own way could be a "good thing".

and the 9am or 10am PT kick-offs for some road games won't help them much....

Yes, he has talent at Michigan. In part because he's a great recruiter. But OSU has arguably better recruits. Harbaugh had his team ready for the game (really, he'd been prepping his team for this game all season) and had an excellent game plan. What a great coach.

I wonder about that. I was based in Detroit for four years, went to a number of Big House games, worked with 100+ Michigan grads, most of whom were red-hot fans. They didn't exactly pine for Schembechler, and they were cognizant of the shortcomings of the two coaches immediately prior to Harbaugh. I didn't hear any of them want Harbaugh fired, and those that I knew well essentially said he was under (not undue) pressure to win and to beat tOSU.  Mission accomplished.

I have followed Michigan football to some degree during the JH years because I wanted to see if his EUTM would actually fly there. I think the Fan opinion in Michigan was somewhat like the Cardboard. There were some very vocal fans that wanted JH gone. His failure to beat tOSU was one reason. There was also a sense that the program was flailing because of frequent coaching changes and highly rated recruits leaving.  There were also some very vocal fans that thought that JH was a good coach and that he would eventually get it right. The majority was somewhere in between. They realized how hard it was to beat tOSU, realized that many of the previous Michigan coaches had "issues", and that it wasn't going to be a slam dunk to find a coach that could bring Michigan back to where they wanted it to be. They had been on a "close but not going to make it" trajectory with previous coaches. They thought JH had the chops but they were getting very concerned by his consecutive losses to tOSU and the apparent disarray in the program. JH was also rubbing some people the wrong way and that was being noticed. Even the Viking's situation after a good year was a red flag to some.

Winning cures lots of concerns. The program has broken through and defeated tOSU twice in a row, one on the road. This is indeed a big deal. The supposed phenom QB who didn't immediately seem to have JH's confidence came through big time this year and really gave Michigan the offensive threat it hadn't had during JH's tenure. That is a "big deal" and will quiet the critics. I am always interested in coaching "success" because it is always difficult to know the causes and effects. JH has had a couple of really good teams in years where tOSU appears to be on a downward trajectory. Michigan definitely got better this year. Last year could be ascribed to a great Michigan defense and a suspect tOSU offense. This year's Michigan team won the game and left little doubt. Michigan may be the new dominant team due to the decline of tOSU. This could persist for a while. It could also be because Michigan has gotten better and will continue to do so. Is JH a genius or lucky? I think maybe both.

RE: Other Games this Long Weekend - BostonCard - 11-27-2022

Remember also that initially he was having trouble beating Michigan State as well.  Failing to beat tOSU was a failing, but understandable given how much of a juggernaut OSU had been, but there was no excuse for not beating their little sibling, Michigan State. It got bad enough that Harbaugh had to take a pay cut to mollify the masses.

Give Harbaugh credit; he turned it around, and now has a juggernaut of his own.  But let’s not pretend that there weren’t fans who were growing tired of his antics.

Ducks went for it on 4th down from their own 29 and got stuffed.  They had a 3 point lead at that point.  Pretty stupid call IMO.

There were several questionable play calls by the quacks, but this one was a real head scratcher. 9 minutes left in the game, at least one time out left, this was the final nail in their coffin.  Stuffing this play fired up the Beavers as ducks fell into state of panic and confusion.

Might have been the Beavs best 15 minutes of football this season.
