18 Ks for Canady

I know Alana had a perfect game against Fresno last year, but that was the most dominant pitching performance I have ever seen in 10+ years as a Stanford softball fan. Villanova did not get the ball out of the infield in fair territory! 18K, which is one off the program record, and a career high. From the first inning, crystal clear that the matchup between Canady and the Wildcat batters was going to be one-sided and dominant. Canady still has not allowed a run, but she exceeded even those lofty standards tonight.

Canady; first Stanford player since 2010 to throw multiple no-hitters in a single season.

Stanford has games scheduled today at 3:30 pm and 6:00 pm.  The weather forecast shows heavy rain this morning and early tonight.  I don't know if they can get either of these games in.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 03-04-2023

3:30 pm scheduled Sunday softball game in rain delay.  No indication when game may start.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 03-04-2023

Actually the delay is Cal and Miami of Ohio still playing. Score is 7-7 top of 5th.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 03-04-2023

Yes, I looked at the Miami (Ohio) livestats.  After seven innings the score is 11-11.

Finally in inning 8 Cal wins 12-11.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 03-04-2023

Wow it was 11-7 Miami In The 7th
Stanford will be playing until midnight

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 03-04-2023

Stanford is scheduled to play two games today.  The best they can do is one game tonight, right?

If they play one game tonight, they won't try to play three games tomorrow, will they?

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 03-04-2023

The schedule was two today one tomorrow
However it’s now one game today and two tomorrow

After one inning Stanford and Villanova tied at 0-0.   Temperature around 50 degrees F.  The announcer said the Villanova players were saying how nice the weather is.

After two innings Stanford up 1-0.  I believe the announcer said the PAC-12 tournament will be televised on ESPN.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 03-04-2023

After six innings Stanford up 3-0.

BobK would you venture an opinion about which Stanford team has the best chance to win an NC in 2023?

Softball, Beach Volleyball, WVB, or WBB?

I'm not BobK, but I'll opine.

Men's gymnastics is #1 and heavily favored to win for the 4th year in a row
Women's water polo also #1 and just defeated #2 USC (though they will likely play 3 more times this year)
Women's golf #1, but down 2 All Americans due to injuries

Or were you asking which team among Softball, BVB, WVB or WBB the best chance to win in 2023?

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 03-04-2023

I completely agree with your response.  Water Polo and Golf (even without Heck) are women's sports more likely to get an NC. I was looking for a choice among the four Stanford sports I follow. In softball I'm trying to figure out how good Canady is. I want to see her pitch against some top PAC-12 teams.

I think the sky is the limit for this team, and I want to be optimistic but also a bit realistic at the same time. The pitching and fielding is definitely good enough already to win a national championship (we rank third in the country in Massey in Defense, which includes both pitching and fielding). However, we rank 37th in Massey in offense. Overall, that has us in contention for a top 8 seed, but I don't know if the offense is quite good enough yet. One thing I have noticed with recent teams under Coach Allister is I think we are a bit too aggressive at the plate, and that shows up in fewer walks and HBPs. I think we need to take a few more pitches, particularly against weaker competition, and let the opponent give us some free base runners.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 03-04-2023

Thanks, to expand on the pitching, in the current 15 game win streak there are only two games where the opponent scored more than one run.  That's pretty good so far.

I'm also not BobK, but I think the odds would be WBB > WVB >>> softball > beach volleyball. We haven't made the softball world series in 10 years and we've never won a round of ncaa in Bvb. Both are having good seasons but it would take more than just one leap forward to go from their recent results to a natty. Wbb has the most talent but March madness is always a bit of a crap shoot. Wvb should be better in 2023 than 2022 so it's close behind wbb I'd say.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 03-05-2023

I always agree with whatever Jamesy writes and agree again. Beach was almost awesome yesterday so close to defeating the defending national champ

Mens gymnastics of course the best chance. Women’s Golf has an injury to a player that may hold Stanford back but they and Women’s Water Polo next

Also, in SB there is the challenge of getting past Oklahoma to win the NC. They must be as big favorites to win it all as our men’s Gym and women’s golf (when healthy). teams

Doubleheader today against Miami (Ohio).  First game at 11:30 am.  Kudos to the softball IT person.  Official gostanford.com schedule is updated to reflect the change.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 03-05-2023

After two innings Stanford up 3-0.  Bright sunshine.  Looking good to get both games in today.

Stanford up 7-0.  Textbook bunt by Allie Clements.  Brings a runner across the plate and she was safe at first base.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 03-05-2023

10-0 win. Mercy rule after 4 1/2 innings. Another shut out by Vawter
