I'm puzzled, are either Chris Rock or Will Smith in any of the aforementioned shows? Not complaining, or lamenting the apparent thread drift, just curious.

Yes.  It’s ok.  I was expecting more “action”.  It’s interesting, though.

I watched 'Old Knives' on the strength of the cast.

Incredibly stupid movie.

So you've watched Bosch on Amazon Prime? very good show, new season drops on May 6th.

Best television for me over the last few years are Taylor Sheridan's shows: Yellowstone and 1883.

Agreed on all points, though I had to be won over to accept perennial bad guy Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch.

Yes Welliver is great as Bosch, and the series has one of the best soundtracks on TV.  However, after the third or fourth season, it started to get old.

Just finished two years of “Condor”. I had to swallow the political BS which is the evil US with the even more evil CIA. But it’s a good thriller.

Agree on the Sheridan Shows. And if you haven’t seen Hell or High Water, do.  It’s excellent.

Still, Justified is my all-time favorite.  Great characters and writing.  Best villains of any series I’ve seen. I believe they are doing a movie. Edit : It’s actually going to be a short series on FX. Wonder if Boyd surfaces. After all, “they dug coal together.”

RE: Cage Match, Rock vs. Smith. Who ya got? - Phogge - 04-10-2022

Condor Season One was fine, Season Two sucked. The movie, Three Days of the Condor better and the novel Six Days of the Condor even better. Ditto Deep State Season One vs Two, mostly because Mark Strong is always great (Jim Prideux in Tinker, Tailor).

Goliath shot beautifully.

Sheridan directed/wrote Wind River. Best use of Jeremy Renner and Graham Greene is always great.

There have been rumors about Sicario Three and War Party (Tom Hardy) but both shelved.

Well, I’m a Connollyphile. So, I liked all of it.  I do think they played up the Father-Daughter angle too much.  It’s certainly a theme in many of the books.  But not as prominent as the show.  Course, the spin off has her starring as an LA cop. So, I suspect that was part of the plan.

She's...not a high point for me.  On the show.  She's fine in the books, and a well balanced character.

Yeah, the part where (warning, spoilers) the ex-wife is killed and the father daughter relationship is over-exploited (season 4?) was where I stopped losing interest.

I thought it should have won Best Picture the year it was released, fantastic movie from beginning to end.

Funny, that actually is (spoiler alert) a part of one of the books.  Except the Mom/ex-wife is killed in Hong Kong.

Neither.  Will Smith pitches for the Braves and catches for the Evil Ones.

These days I am desperately trying to avoid the cliche of Angry Old Man and failing miserably. I admire Mark Strong as villain (Septimus in 'Stardust', a terrific movie) or hero (Merlin in 'The King's Men'). But I am impatient with the British Plot and avoid it whenever I can.

The British Plot, my own coinage, refers to the fact that circa 1995 the BBC decided there was no such thing as an actual terrorist or enemy agent, that they were all either rogue agents, double agents, or victims of agency treachery. This may have been exciting and subversive when it was first done, about the time of the birth of Christ, but is an ancient tired cliche now. No one seems to realize that.

'Old Knives' was fatally flawed for me by [SPOILER] (a) the plot turning on the CIA callously turning over a proven asset, a family man, in exchange for unvetted KGB information, and (b) the CIA employing professional killers, in a world where an overlarge bar tab can be instantly reported to the New York Times. I mean, come on. As a matter of fact, a major issue for the CIA is excessive loyalty to foreign assets, whom it protects with might and main. But institutional loyalty does not fit the Hollywood bias.

I will lose what little reputation I have, but I am recommending to one and all a small, independent movie, 'The Fare', shot in six days on a sound studio by a couple of UCLA grad film students. The script was written by the female lead. It has zero production values (Phogge is sneering already) and plays like an extended Twilight Zone'. But the twist is extremely clever, the oldest and newest both at once, the two leads are exceptionally likable, and the overall concept hyper-romantic, rather refreshing in this era of jejune cynicism. It's a small picture, but on its scale, it works. Rentable for a smidgin on Prime or Vudu -

'The Fare'. Worth the three bucks

Agreed, it was an excellent movie and superior to La La Land or the other nominees.  I didn't see Moonlight, and I thought Arrival was also really strong.  And I rarely agree that the Best Picture is the actual winner.  Hell or High Water has 96% approval on Rotten Tomatoes. The restaurant scene alone was worth the price of admission for me.

Excellent movie.  I really enjoyed it.
