Especially since Mao banned golf back in 1949 (or so the Internet tells me).

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Hulk01 - 05-22-2018

It sure looks like Walker won the draw.

There was no way she could depend on Liu for a win against anyone.  Given that, throw her against NW's clear #1 player Hannah (37th ranked nationally, almost 80 slots higher than NW's #2).  A rout only counts as one loss.

That leaves to play their #2 and Valenzuela to play their #4--and Aubert to play their #5.  We end up as big favorites in those three.

Wang vs. Cho?  Cho has played much better in this event, but Wang on the season ranks 63rd and Cho 112th.  That's a matchup we'll take, too.

PS:
The all time leaders in NCAA final matches played are Casey Danielson and Shannon Aubert , each with eight.  I think second place might be four.

I know it's early--and to be clear, this is not woofing by looking ahead but rather rooting against UCLA's success for national championship and Directors' Cup purposes--but Arizona has a 3-1-1 lead....  Let's go, Wildcats!  (The red ones, not the purple ones. Purple is a bad look on a wildcat.)

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BigEasyCard - 05-22-2018

I'm getting "Service unavailable" message from the link to the leaderboard.  Anyone else having this problem?

Last tweet from @StanfordWGolf was two hours ago.  Northwestern's Twitter feed not much better.

Thanks, and Geaux Cardinal!

It's fine for me, so here's an update:

Stanford leads 3-2 right now.  Aubert is 3 up through 8, Lee is 2 up through 7, and Valenzuela is 1 up through 8.  Liu is 4 down through 8, and Wang is 1 down through 10 (this is Wang's opponent's third time in the match with a 1 up lead; Wang has gotten it back to AS twice before).

Arizona is leading UCLA 4-1, though 2 of those leads are 2 holes (through 7 and 8, respectively) and 2 are just one hole (through 7 and 9, respectively). UCLA's one lead is 2 up through 9. Plenty of holes left for the Bruins to assert themselves, of course. But something to keep an eye on.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - oldalum - 05-22-2018

looks like Hulk was right on! Seems like Walker pulled off the tennis equivalent of playing your #6 player on the #1 court and bumping the rest of your team down a court--you concede on #1, but all the other matches got easier. It's prohibited in college tennis, but in the USTA leagues I play in, the captains revel in such gamesmanship.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Hulk01 - 05-22-2018

We're not scoring well but we're playing a team that isnt't either.  UCLA has run into a gauntlet. Their opponent  Arizona (like Alabama) is flirting with nine under for nine holes.

I'd love to see how Walker did that.  Her wish--assuming hers was the same as mine--was to get Aubert against NW's #5, Albane against their #3 or #4, Lee against their #2, and throw Liu into the #1.  Coach got all those those wishes.  I can't imagine Northwestern wanted this match up, or why they would.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - ColoradoTree - 05-22-2018

As if on cue, Wang gets her match back to all square.  But Lee dropped a hole and is now just 1 up.  Stanford's lead is 3-1-1, but two of those leads are just one hole.

UCLA seems to be remembering that they're good at golf. Galdiano just won two straight holes to get her match back to all square, and Tavatanakit is back to just 1 down.  Arizona leads 3-1-1, with two of the leads being just one hole.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - oldalum - 05-22-2018

We're getting to the tough holes 3-6 stretch where Aubert typically makes some bogeys. We're going to need her or Wang to get through that stretch in good shape. Not worrying about Lee and Valenzuela: you need your best players to play well to win.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

We are over one hour into coverage on the Golf Channel and only now seeing the first Stanford-Northwestern shot. Andrea Lee rolled in a birdie on 18 (her 9th hole). Her opponent was tentative on her shorter birdie so Lee moves to 2 up.

The focus is on the matches that went out first - Alabama vs. Kent St, U.SC vs. Duke.  Alabama is rolling. Man, I am glad they are in the other half of the bracket. They seem to be the strongest team right now.

Alabama cruised to a 4-1 win, but all the other matches are tight (3-2 or all square).  Currently we are playing holes 9-13 and are up 2 or 3 in three holes, and down 2 or 3 in the other two, so you have to like our chances.  Give Liu some credit; the sacrificial lamb was down five holes after 10, but has earned two of them back, and while a win is unlikely, you love someone who will battle to the end.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - oldalum - 05-22-2018

Arizona's best player, playing in the last match, is now at all square. She needs to win that match for Arizona to have a chance.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - ColoradoTree - 05-22-2018

If anyone is having trouble with the live scoring, Stanford's lead is 3-2.  Aubert leads by 3 through 13, Valenzuela by 2 through 11, and Lee by 2 through 9.  Wang is 1 down through 14, and Liu is 3 down through 12.

UCLA-Arizona is at 2-2-1.  Arizona's leads are 1 up through 14 and 2 up through 12, while UCLA's leads are 3 up through 13 and 1 up through 12. The match between UCLA's Tavatanakit and Arizona's Pagdanganan, currently all square through 11, may be the decider.  Pagdanganan has had a great week, making eagle on 18 yesterday to get Arizona to the playoff, and finishing in a tie for 2nd with Andrea Lee at -6 after four rounds of stroke play.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - oldalum - 05-22-2018

Lee's lead is down to 1. Like Arizona, we need our best player to win. Not concerned.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Aubert is now 4 up with 4 to play.
Valenzuela is 4 up with 5 to play.
Lee is 1 up with 6 to play.

Wang is 2 down with 2 to play.
Liu is 4 down with 5 to play.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - ColoradoTree - 05-22-2018

Well, Arizona upsetting UCLA was a beautiful dream, and while it has not yet died, it is looking a bit sickly.  UCLA is now up 3-1-1, with one win booked (3&2) and leads of 1 up (through 13) and 1 up (through 12). Arizona's only lead is 2 up through 14, and one match is AS through 16.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-22-2018

Lee rolls in about a 20 footer for birdie on 4 (the 13th hole of the match) for a 2 up lead!

Valenzuela closed out Lau 5 and 4. Wang and Liu have lost. The match is tied 2-2. It all comes down to Lee vs. Mao.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - bl82 - 05-22-2018

It is all up to Lee now.  The other matches are over and the score is 2-2.  Lee is up 2 through 13.
