Re: Alumni Tailgate - GoodGrief - 12-22-2015

A few things:

Good suggestions on places for a Cardboard Meetup. Of those, I imagine that someplace on the 3rd Street Promenade like Barney's might be the easiest to get to. I'll try to swing by to check out some places this week in my spare time (hahahahahahahaha!!! there's never spare time with a baby)

I second 97Fan's suggestion about taking the counter-intuitive, less-direct, 210-E path to get to the Rose Bowl. In 2012, the Rose Bowl's official site urged people to take that route. I remember being astounded at how easy and clear it was (and I remember other people's horror stories about taking the 134-E directly into Pasadena)

BeegDawg, I agree with your sentiments about Stanford's ability to throw a tailgate. Admittedly, I have not been to one in a really long time, so hopefully they've improved.

And yeah, I have no idea what is planned for the Buck/Cardinal gathering, but it's certainly possible that $10 buys you admission into a roped-off area in an otherwise free restaurant plus some appetizers.

You guys could try a meet up at Father's Office, if for no other reason than to add to the Great Cardboard Burger Debate.

And it wouldn't be if the Yankees had not won phase one of the War of Northern Aggression.

If you can find me I'll have a big bag of 3 X 3s animal style and a bottle of Jack.

Well, on one hand, the North winning the Civil War led to indignities like "arugula on burgers that you don't even have to eat."

On the other hand, it freed all the slaves.

Pros, cons, you know.

Give and take?  (Oh, I sense Yvonne simmering even now, as a disturbance in the force.)

Absolutely come in from "over the top" off 210 (I refuse to say "the").  Of course, in my hometown nobody even knows the numbers of freeways they all have names (Eisenhower, Kennedy, Dan Ryan, Stevenson, Edens, Tri-State, etc.)

Re: Alumni Tailgate - Hank 91 - 12-22-2015

I took the 210 each of the last two times. It made absolutely no sense at all -- coming from Long Beach, it was like making a giant letter z on the map -- but it was smooth sailing the whole way. If you're early enough, you'll even miss traffic.

Ah, you're a Chicagoan. I remember those names from family trips but could never keep track of which was which. Heading out from Milwaukee to points east, we saw the Chicago freeways as bottlenecks to be suffered through.

It's our way of keeping the outsiders outside.

Re: Alumni Tailgate - JJJ - 12-24-2015

I just now received a Fedex delivery of my tailgate party ticket. Wow, didn't realize it was such a big deal. Everyone don't lose or forget yours, because no ticket=no entry!  8)

Re: Alumni Tailgate - winflop - 12-25-2015

If you have lanyards with ticket slots from the last few bowl games, you can put your game ticket on one side and your tailgate ticket on the other.  If not, go buy one it's worth it.  Preserves your ticket and you never have to worry about where it is all day long.

Excellent advice. My wife and I paid twenty bucks for two ticket lanyards last time. It sounds ridiculous, but I've always had a thing about tickets as keepsakes, and these tickets are simply too beautiful to be folded up in a pocket. (We ended up selling ONE of those lanyards for twenty bucks during the game, so it worked out.)

Re: Alumni Tailgate - GoodGrief - 12-27-2015

On the lanyard subject, if you're not getting ripped off on the price of the lanyard (or even if you are), check the date of the lanyard. My friend paid only $10 for his lanyard, but upon closer inspection, it was for the previous year's game.

Here's another tip, which I learned from 2013:  You can get it for less if you wait until game time.  There's lots of people selling the lanyard/clear plastic ticket holder before the game, and they are everywhere, from the line at the shuttle buses at the Parsons Corp lot to the concourse around the stadium.  It's usually $10.  But I noted that the sellers were unloading them for $5 as we were walking towards the gates right before game time.  It is a perishable inventory, after all.

You can also get the Rose Bowl T shirts for cheap from the vendors on the street post game as you walk back to the Parsons Corp lot.  (The line for the shuttles back to downtown Pasadena are just waaaaay too long so we always walked). Those prices also drop to around $5 a shirt as the vendors have no market for them on January 2nd.

Isn't this awesome that we know the whole Rose Bowl routine?  ;D

Ah, but you should be careful. On the way back to my car after the win over Wisconsin, I decided to buy three t-shirts for my children. The prices were good -- $10 or so -- but when I got home and looked at them in the light I discovered that the quarterback pictures among the three players was #6 Josh Nunes, not #8 Kevin Hogan.
