But, this is one reason we have recruited so many great athletes on defense, and we have had pretty good success planning against Oregon's defense in the past.

Having a competent offense also helps the defense a lot against Oregon, even an Adams led Oregon.  Lucky for us, we have a more than competent offense.  UW, sadly, does not.

Utah applied the finishing blow to ASU.

Utah wins 34-18.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - washingtonismoney - 10-17-2015

Pac-12 refs on acid during a confusing play in UW-Oregon. Oregon up 26-13 with 5:00 left; Washington has the ball at Oregon's 15. Washington calls a passing play. Flag; Washington OL surrenders to the pass rush. An Oregon DL strips the ball from Jake Browning; a separate DL scoops and is in the process of scoring before the ref blows the play dead. Why? It's unclear; Browning's knee was no where near the ground. Anyway, it doesn't matter: personal foul against Oregon, and Washington has 1st and goal from the 5.

Now it's 3rd and goal from the 2, with about 3:30 left; the Huskies are approaching clock management the way Exxon approaches climate change: a nice resource to be burned. Husky fans are booing.

Might want to tap the brakes on top-15; a top 15 team blows out Washington with aplomb. But Oregon isn't incompetent.

Washington scores while I'm writing, 26-19 pending the XP.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - washingtonismoney - 10-17-2015

UW docs looking at Jake Browning's shoulder -- seem to be stretching out his arm pretty heavily. An injury?

Re: Week 7 in opponents - BostonCard - 10-17-2015

It would take a Michigan/Michigan State ending for UW to beat Oregon at this point, unless Oregon somehow stops the clock.

That was my thought. This Husky team just doesn't look very good. Even old Oregon in a down-ish year would be up 3 scores right now.

"Hey UW, here are 40 seconds, have fun!"

But Browning is hurt.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - washingtonismoney - 10-17-2015

Wow...what a playcall from Helfrich. Given the opportunity to run off half the clock with a run play, they call a pass -- which fails!

Now UW's sending out their backup.

What a weird game.

Wow, Vernon Adams throws it on third down, incomplete; stopped the clock.  Washington has about a minute.

This is getting spicy

Re: Week 7 in opponents - stupac2 - 10-17-2015

Worst clock management this year? I certainly haven't seen worse. Both teams trying their best to lose it here.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - ThePassionOfTheChryst - 10-17-2015

What a poorly called/executed drive

Re: Week 7 in opponents - ThePassionOfTheChryst - 10-17-2015

Well, in the short term this Washington loss benefits Stanford in the North standings.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - CrazedZooChimp - 10-17-2015

Well, that's that.  Not much hope for the UW offense with a backup QB.  Sucks for the Huskies.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - BostonCard - 10-17-2015

UW was featuring their backup QB, he throws a game-ending interception against Oregon in prevent defense.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - washingtonismoney - 10-17-2015

UW seems to have a pretty good defense; Oregon averaged 5.9 yards per play against a season-long average of 6.71. But their offense looks so incompetent and young.

EDIT: weirdly, UW averaged 6.2 yards-per-play against Oregon. Weird as, whenever I saw them play, the Husky offense looked to have neither bark nor bite.

They have probably the best or second best defense in the country.  But their offense is real real bad.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - JohnR34231 - 10-17-2015

A bit of a moral victory for the Huskies coming within 6 points of the Ducks. They've been getting blown out on a regular basis for a number of years now.

Washington's defense is certainly good, but the notion that they are #1, or #2 in the country is a bit of a (and maybe a h.uge) stretch. We'll find out more this next weekend, though.

Re: Week 7 in opponents - stupac2 - 10-18-2015

S&P+ has Washington (not including this week yet) at #7. Just in terms of pure ypp they're #25 (that's including this week), which is behind Northwestern (though no one else we play). Isolating in conference games makes them look even worse, #53, behind Utah and Northwestern. If you isolate Power 5 teams (cfbstats is neat) they're barely ahead of us.

If you look at YPP differential (just against Power 5), they're negative  -.31, and #49 (odd that so much of the country is negative). We're #19, at 1.09 just ahead of Alabama and the last team >1. Only team we play that's ahead of us is Notre Dame. Oregon is #29 at 0.31.

Does all of this mean anything? I dunno, but I was bored. Note that Power 5 includes our faceplant against Northwestern, so I think this actually undersells us by a bit.
