Weirdest choice for hat reveal in, like, forever - Redrum - 12-15-2014
Sounds like a good kid, but the hat looks like a red version of Bill Murray's hat in Caddyshack....while he gave the baseball hat to his sister. Guess we could say its just, ummm, retro.
Watched Scarlett's highlight video - Redrum - 12-15-2014
For a big guy, he moves really well. That said, Central Catholics opponents didn't look like tough opponents. (I know, I know, it's a Cam Scarlett highlight reel. What did I expect?). The kickoff returns are impressive but if you want to imagine him as a Stanford back, start at about the 1:40 mark.
-- Good change of direction, but my goodness the holes were freaking h-u-g-e. At least Scarlett knew how to use them. He was running in space for almost all the highlight vid.
-- Could improvise when opponents broke down the play at his point of attack.
-- Good hands. Saw several very decent catches, although few had him in tight with a defender. Showed a lot of pass catches. He's comfortable in a passing play.
-- Could take a hit and keep moving, but nothing on the videos looked like Gerhart or Taylor running through tough tackles or getting a couple yards extra at end of play. Just no plays like those on the vid.
-- Really cut well upfield to the hole. That could have been Central Catholic's offense-- which had the its wide running game clicking.
So, he's a big guy who is faster than HS opponents but won't be dramatically faster at college level. Runs "high", but a big guy who was usually running to avoid or break away from tacklers, not in contact.
But real, experienced college coaches watched him both in person and on video, even with the crappy and failed plays left in. I hope he turns out to be a dynamite back for us.

We own the market for Oregon high school players who put up large yardage numbers as RBs and suffer a knee injury their senior year. Joey Alfieri last year and Cameron Scarlett this year. If I were a RB in Oregon being recruited by Stanford next year, I would wear a pre-cautionary knee brace.

This is a significant move and even though the sites do not mention Stanford in connection with this young man, you have to love our chances if admission works out favorably. Word is he enjoyed his visit to campus and is connected with several Stanford players. As a DL, he reminds me of Henry Anderson.

Maybe he's going to be a dual-sport athlete at Stanford: football and the bass fishing team.

With Scarlett likely to redshirt due to his injury and only two returning RBs, could Alfieri be moved to RB? 6ft 3, 230, great SPARQ score at the Opening. Â

I count four returning running backs, Wright, Young, Sanders, and McCaffrey. I could be wrong, but I think only Seale will be gone next year.

Arrows up on Ben Edwards? UDFG secured the 3rd Safety commitment in its class today. Pretty hard to imagine any program would allocate four scholarships in a class to the Safety position.Â
Edwards had his finalists down to Stanford and UDFG. If he is admitted to Stanford, he will be signing with Stanford, IMO.
The services are all over the place on Edwards:
Rivals: 4 star and the #11 S in the class
Scout: 3 star and the #47 S in the class
ESPN: 4 star and the #13 S in the class
 247: 3 star and the #20 S in the class

StanfordFB reports that Kenneth Brinson picked Army over Stanford (as well as BC and G-Tech). If Brinson had an genuine offer and academic admission, this would be the first time I remember a recruit choosing Army over Stanford.

The Negative Nellies over on the Bootboard will have a field day over this one.
I had never heard of the guy, but it sounds like he had an offer. Apparently he is going directly to the academy rather than through the prep school so his grades/test scores must have made him at least close to admissable here.

Maybe Stanford has guys rated higher than Brinson ready to commit and Stanford told Brinson. Or maybe Brinson just really wanted to be in the Army? Can't really see cause for consternation here.
