Well:

1/ You have to get psyched up to take it.  That takes energy and requires effort.

2/ If you are really serious about it, you should do some preparation.  That requires time and effort.

But yeah, it seems like the AP classes would be enough of a commitment that an extra ACT session shouldn't be that much a burden.

My feeling -- and this is just from reading the quotes, not from hearing tone of voice or seeing facial expressions -- was that he felt he had already done a fair amount and wasn't sure he wanted to do more. A lot of these elite recruits are in touch with each other, so it wouldn't be hard to imagine a conversation like this:

Stanford recruit: I have to go study, these three AP classes are killing me!
USC recruit: What's an AP class?
Stanford recruit: The Stanford coaches told me I had to take them senior year.
USC recruit: I have enough credits to graduate, so I'm good.
Stanford recruit: I also have to study for the SAT on Saturday.
USC recruit: Haven't you already taken that twice?
Stanford recruit: Oh, and then I have to really buckle down and work on my Stanford application.
USC recruit: What's an application?

At a certain point, there will always be some kids who get tired of the process. Sure, they've already taken the classes, but senioritis can be a powerful thing. Not everyone runs through the tape.

You're probably correct. When you are a star athlete being pursued by dozens of schools and Stanford is the only one asking you to do all this extra work to qualify, eventually you say enough is enough. Green has apparently reached that point.

The recruiting picture seems to be full of mystery and intrigue again this year.  It's mid-December and the class has only 11 public commits.  Does Shaw have a bunch of silent verbals?  Are there any stealth recruits this year?  Or are we just hoping that Shaw gets the good news from a high percentage of guys who are still undecided?

My guess has been that the AP classes are the proxy for verbals now.  If a 4 or 5 star recruit is taking two AP classes in their senior year then that's got to be at least as solid as a verbal, probably more solid really.

If the officially undecided athletes are taking AP courses and have submitted applications then all will be fine IF Stanford admits them.

Since the admission is the great unknown, I don't blame any of the athletes for electing not to declare.

I hope that there are high school football players out there who want to take 2 AP classes regardless of whether they are sure they want to attend Stanford. 

I think there are at least a few officially undecided players who will have no trouble gaining admission.  I suspect Buncom, St. Brown, and J. Reid are in that category.

Stanford doesn't need to recruit.  It doesn't need to offer either.  It needs to admit . . . student-athletes that can handle the academics at Stanford.

I think Stanford wants to avoid the situation of having players commit and subsequently getting bad news from the admissions department. Kids in that situation sometimes raise a big stink about it (Rex Manu this year being the latest example) and that is definitely not good press for Stanford.

Four-star running back Cameron Scarlett is announcing his decision on Monday morning at 11:00 AM Stanford time. He's deciding between Stanford, Washington, and UCLA. He'd be a nice addition.

With regards to Scarlett, it is early action admissions notification season.  Kid I interviewed just let me know that he got in.  So let's hope The Scarlett Pimpernel got a big fat envelope, or I suppose, in this day and age, a long email with attachments?

Admissions decisions for athletes do not follow the regular Stanford admissions calendar, so the fact that it is early action notification season is irrelevant.  Athletes are admitted as soon as their admissions materials have been reviewed if they are clearly admissible.

A lot of schools saw what we saw - Redrum - 12-15-2014

UCLA, Oregon, Ore St., Washington, Wash St., Arizona, Arizona St., Cal... plus the Domers.  No idea how he'll do for us or even if he recovers fully from his ACL,  but you gotta love the odds on those offers.  Lots of experienced eyes looked at him play in person and on video.
