This Stanford team is hard for me to figure out. On an individual basis Stanford talent is in a different universe from Houston. Yet if you ask Houston fans what they thought of sets three and four, they would likely say Houston was the better team.
It would not surprise me if Stanford sweeps ASU or if they get swept by ASU. I have no idea what will happen. ASU is in the round of 16 for the first time in their program history.
"Regional Semifinals matchup times and broadcast info has been announced." All matches are on ESPN2 or ESPNU. Stanford plays Arizona State on Thursday 8:30 PT (11:30 ET). Tennessee plays Texas at Maples starting at 6:00 PT.

I am going to avoid opinions on why, but when this team is off it is obvious. The blocking vanishes. It’s been that way the second half of the year except the second ASU match which was just an all around mess. They are remarkably good at turning back on - see the dominant late 4th and all 5th set blocking. But it can be really scary. It was also interesting the service errors suddenly vanished in the 5th as well.

I logged into the Stanford ticketing website, and I see my all-session tickets for the regionals.
There is a link to "upgrade", but from there it is rather opaque as to what kind of upgrade is available.
Has anyone used this option?

I agree with PaloAlto that are talent is as good or better as any in the tournament, but our inconsistent play, frequent letdowns and questionable mental toughness causes problems. And, love to hear other people's thoughts on this, is coaching a problem. As was noted, Houston adjusted well and it was after losing two sets before we adjusted. Houston had only 2 players getting the vast majority of their kill attempts, yet we still weren't blocking them effectively. In 5 sets, I figured we'd have 15-20 blocks when we only have to focus on 2 hitters. Also, how much are the players and how much is the coach responsible for our inconsistent play?
Last year we played flat in the elite 8 game and blew set 5 at the end. I knew we were a better team than that, and was concerned about our killer instinct. We got better with another year of experience this year, yet our mental toughness and focus throughout a match as well our killer instinct in the toward the end of the sets has been even worse this year. Our talent should put us in the championship match, yet we barely won our second match against a Houston team that had played 6 matches against top 20 teams and lost all, mostly in straight sets. Is Hambly to blame for the team not playing its best when it matters most?
Revised thoughts on this weekend anyone?
ASU blew us away 3-0 winning the third set at 14. They have one superstar who is also #4 (Marta Levinska) who leads the team in all offensive stats (554, 4.74 kills/set, hitting .352) with the next closest offensive player being #12 Geli Gyr with 271 kills, 2.71 kills/set, and a pretty low .229 hitting percentage. She got 17 kill is 3 sets against us last time, the only player with double digit kills. Let's see if we consistently double block #4. I would assume that coaching will be focused on stopping her or at least slowing her down to 3 kills/set and under .300 hitting percentage. If there were a chalk talk, I'd ask Coach his plans for stopping her. We are a better team then ASU, but they are playing well blowing away #4 seed BYU in 3 again with #4 getting 17 kills (over .500 hitting percentage) and no other ASU woman in double digits. Stop her, I think we win. As Tara's coaching approach is, focus defensively on not letting the best player on the other team beat you, but instead make a less player bear the burden.

Tickets sold out in 15 minutes for Thursday and Saturday at the Pitt regional. I think Stanford still has tickets for sale, particularly since they keep sending me email advertisements for tickets on sale.

12 blocks in 5 sets is not great. It's below our 2.7 block/set average. I'm sure you do not think Stanford played well in sets 3 & 4. Any thoughts on why? What are your predictions for how far Stanford will go in the tourney? Yes, we have a great won-loss record and have, as I've repeated, as much or more talent than any team in the country. Yet we lose focus which I'm sure led to our last brutal 3-0 loss against the team we happen to play on Thursday.

I've thought Hambly was pretty good at in-game adjustments, but I am puzzled at how sets 3 and 4 went wrong on Saturday night (and similar issues some other matches). Maybe he was slow to adjust or find the right response?
I have not seen video of the loss at ASU, but I think the team will be fired up to avenge that loss. I expect all three sets will be close, but I will predict a 3-0 sweep.

12 blocks in 5 sets is not great. It's below our 2.7 block/set average.
Let's hope all the Stanford stats can be above average (;-) I'm not sure we should "figure" that they'll be above the best we've done all season.

I agree with everything you posted here. The first thought that came to my mind in seeing ASU as our third round opponent is Stanford has to find a way to slow down Levinska's offense. If Stanford can clamp down on her I believe we have a chance.
On occasion when Stanford has been in a funk this season I asked myself if it could be any fault of the coaching staff. My conclusion was always no, it's not the coaching. It's lack of execution by the players; too many unforced mistakes. Hambly can't go out on the court and play the ball himself.
Is Stanford in the recruiting sweepstakes for Whitney Lauenstein as a transfer student ? OPP with two years of eligibility.
In regard to the MB position, the NCAA transfer portal is filled with MBs at academic schools but I don't see anyone who would be at a skill level needed by Stanford.

Articles I read say she has two years of eligibility left. I don't know if Covid or medical plays any issue with that.
