Other than KJ, Smith might be the recruit we have to worry about the least. He's a consensus 5 star (247 composite) and is the #12 player in the country according to the 247 composite. Unless all four recruiting sites are way off (and all the SEC/Big-12 teams that offered him), he's really really good.

I'm pretty sure we were in Crawford's top 10. Don't necessarily think he's coming, but we're definitely not 100% out of it.

In interviews, he sounds like a Stanford lean stressing life after football and academics. His twitter seems more pro-Oregon. All 247 analyst have him pointed towards the Ducks which makes sense since he has only visited Oregon and won't be visiting Stanford or UCLA for a few weeks. If he does choose Oregon, we might have a chance to flip him if the visit goes well.

In all seriousness, can a high academic-minded football player "be all he can be" in the Oregon football culture?Â
I've always believed anyone can succeed in college no matter where they go provided they put as much effort into school as sports. But I really wonder if Oregon is so over the top with the priority it puts on sports, if the culture has a way of pulling kids away from taking school as seriously as they might in other environments.Â
Ergo, if Winston really is serious about school, would he be better off at Stanford just from a cultural and environmental standpoint because he'd be in a culture and around peers that really do prioritize school?
Or is the reality that Stanford players take "soft majors" like ST&S because they too really want to focus on sports, and they choose Stanford knowing that having a Stanford degree gives them a leg up on everyone else after sports are over?
Feel free to move this to another board, as this is another "going off the rails" topic in the class of 2016 thread!

Stanford athletes are heterogeneous, ranging the gamut from Frank Buncom to Casey Jacobson. Obviously, the distribution curve at Stanford leans far more toward the academic side than it does at other schools, especially football factories like Oregon.

I wouldn't call ST&S a soft major at all. (Or, put another way, if ST&S is the softest Stanford can offer it's in pretty solid shape.)

What he said. I seriously contemplating majoring in STS (but eventually settled on Chemistry). Athletes like STS as a major because it is very flexible. There is only one absolutely required class (STS 1). The rest of the requirements are more a la carte from a menu.

That doesn't mean that STS is not rigorous. You can look at the courses in the requirements.

Must say, disappointing. But a reminder to take student comments about "the 40 year decision" and high stress on academic with a grain (or maybe a heaping portion) of salt.
On the other hand, maybe he is committing to Oregon to hold a place and then goes ahead with the Stanford application process.Â

Yeah, I've never been a fan of recruits committing and continuing to take visits, but perhaps the schools contribute to that by telling them if they don't pull the trigger now there won't be a place for them.

Costello ranked #3 so far at the Elite 11.
Before you get upset that Shaw passed on the Stanford legacy ranked #1, note that he measured 6'1", 185. Not a pro-style QB.

I'm happy with Costello and in Shaw I trust but I wouldn't write off Buechele.Â
Although he looks a little reedy now college strength and conditioning will add needed bulk and if Buechele puts 25-30 lbs on that frame there are plenty of comparables in the NFL at his height. For example, Drew Brees at 6.0 and 209 lbs or Aaron Rogers at 6.2 and 225 have done pretty well in pro-style sets.
Also, things turned out pretty well for the small, reedy guy on the left in this picture.Â

Wow, I was wondering why Eli was taller than Peyton. That's some family resemblance between Eli and Cooper.

I over-stated the case against Beuchele. He might end up being a very good QB. I just discount the ratings of small high school QBs based on 7-on-7 competition because the format masks the disadvantage of being small. Other big QBs who are extremely highly ranked (Eason, Franks) did not do as well in the rankings at The Opening. The fact that Costello did so well even though he didn't get to take full advantage of his size is a great sign.Â
