Thing is, there’s no place open at the Oracle. Giants OF is in the best shape it’s been in for several years.
Still, it’s been awhile since I’ve been this stoked about a prospect. What a difference a year makes.

Maybe if he gets up to .477…… :)

If that happens, #24 may need to be brought out of retirement……

I knew you and others would get the reference.

Forgive my ignorance, but to whom are you referring. I looked at the Rivercats and the Flying Squirrels stats, and no one comes close to that slash line.

Luis Matos.  That’s his slash line at Sac.  When you look at his ‘23  stats, it is for both Richmond and Sac.  Baseball Reference (always my source) allows you to see stats broken down by level/ team player is with.

Overall he’s at .344/.415/.492/.903. 18 K’s in 211 PA’s

Got it. That's who I thought, but a lot more PA's and a lower average, so I was confused, which is not hard to do. . . .Thanks!

It's a Minneapolis Millers reference...they had a pretty good center fielder on their team.

Oh, no.  One of my favorites.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 06-04-2023

Craig is known for leading the league in losses two consecutive years when he pitched for the original New York Mets. But he was a fairly accomplished pitcher who pitched in four World Series for the Dodgers and Cardinals.

They made 'em differently in Roger's day...I don't think Bochy or Kapler would go this route...

A bit of trivia…

Craig started the last game for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the first game for the New York Mets.

Most under appreciated Giant manager. He and Al Rosen turned around the franchise.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - BobK - 06-06-2023

No question they were saviors Lex. But not under appreciated. Not at all

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 06-06-2023

I didn't realize this, but Roger Craig actually has a slightly better career regular season winning record (738-737, .500) than Bruce Bochy (2,042-2,049, .499)

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - OutsiderFan - 06-07-2023

Craig never had great starting pitching for Giants. Bochy did. That’s why Bochy won WS and Craig didn’t.

I used to cringe when the Giants would grab guys off the scrap heap and put them in their rotation. Rick Reuchel, Don Robinson, and John Burkett were not Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, or Mad Bum by a long shot.

Rick Reuschel was far from the “scrap heap”. He won 215 games.  Started ‘89 AS game.  Although Bo greeted him with about a 475 foot HR to straight away CF.

Robinson was also a solid Giant.  Burkett won 22 games in 93 for Dusty.  Came through the system. Not off the scrap heap.

Giants led MLB in team ERA in ‘87. Had third best team ERA in baseball in ‘89. Scott Garrelts had lowest ERA in league. Certainly not Cain, Lincecum, Bum (although 2010 was the only Championship team where all 3 were close to their best. Cain and Bum in ‘12. Lincecum came out of pen. In ‘14, of course, it was Bum.) But they had good pitching that year.

Bochy’s brilliance, especially post season was how he used his pen. For three post seasons, he made the right call damn near every time. 9-0 plus 2 WC. 9-0 in elimination games. Of the 9 series, Giants were underdogs in at least 7. The possible 2 exceptions being Braves in ‘10 and Cards in ‘12.

Giants had third best team ERA in baseball in ‘89.

They had the third best team ERA in baseball in 1986, Craig's first year managing, then they had the best ERA in MLB in 1987 at 3.68, just ahead of the Dodgers' 3.72. Downs, Hammaker, LaCoss, Garrelts, Krukow, Dravecky, and a cast of thousands. Of the 20 pitchers who pitched for the Giants that year, only one had an ERA over 4.50 (Krukow, at 4.80). For the rest of Craig's tenure, they were 5th, 6th, then 19th, 18th, and 11th in his final season.

IIRC, Roger Craig was a pitching guru who mastered instruction of the sinker.

Incidentally, he managed seven seasons for the Giants. He came in on the heels of the Giants' worst season ever, 62-100, then improved the record by 21 wins to 83-79. His first five full seasons were all winning seasons, with two playoffs seasons in 1987 and 1989...which was the first Giants' pennant in 27 years.

Spot on.

Craig was the right guy at the right time.  He turned the franchise around and created an environment that yielded a competitive team that played well together.  Craig was singularly responsible for putting the Giants on a track that resulted in what we have experienced since that time.

Bochy is a HOF manager who possesses a sixth sense regarding the utilization of his players.  Heck, he currently has the Rangers playing very well - something that shouldn’t surprise anyone who has followed his managerial career.

Craig, Baker, Alou, Bochy - 34 consecutive years of great management. The Giants were damn lucky to have a run like that….

Yes they were. ‘86 got it started. But it was the Big Trade in ‘87  -  Chris Brown, Mark Davis Mark Grant and Keith Comstock -  for Kevin Mitchell, Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts that launched them forward.   Mitchell hit 2 HRs in his first game with Giants and never looked back.  Lefferts was  a solid left handed reliever.  And of course Dravecky.

I didn't say Reuschel was scrap heap, though I can see where you might have thought that was my intent. It was not. I just remember the Giants claiming so many re-tread pitchers in the mid 80s-early 90s. So glad the team stopped doing so since that period.

Yeah, thank God, SF stopped picking up retreads.  Oh wait a second, Guisman, Rodon, Cobb, DeSclafina, Wood, etc. etc. are on the phone.  I need to take that call…..

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 06-07-2023

Looked grim in the early going, Giants went down 4-0 and didn't get their first hit until the sixth inning. They won, 5-4. Stanford's own Austin Slater  was the big star. He got the first RBI, then he knocked in the go ahead run. The two rookies, Schmitt and Bailey, knocked in the other three runs. Bullpen got 11 outs, gave up one hit. First time all season they came back from four runs down. Oft-maligned Tyler Rogers has a 1.80 ERA.Taylor Rogers got the win, is 2-2 with a 3.54 ERA, having recovered from a few bad innings earlier this year. And they're back over .500 at 31-30.

Maybe I should have been more clear in my definition, knowing your MO is to pick nits in an attempt to make people look bad.

When I say the Giants no longer sign sign re-treads I meant guys who were DFA'd by other teams during a season and signing them to pitch for the Giants during that season. The guys you mentioned do not fit that bill, but thanks for playing. Now you can just gleefully anticipate future opportunities to nail someone to the cross for actually being wrong in the future.

Reuschel and Robinson were acquired in trades and Burkett was drafted by SF.  None of them were signed after being DFA’d by another club.
