During the game, they showed another camera angle that showed the tag and the catch.  I didn't think he took off late.

I think the 3B coach looked that mad because he couldn’t believe the RF made a perfect throw. I also think that he might’ve actually been safe.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - PVTree - 06-13-2023

We would have challenged if either Campbell or the coach thought the tag was late.

It was probably pure frustration by the coach at such a precise throw to gun down a fast runner. You just gotta to your cap to the player for such an amazing play.

Never make the last out of an inning at 3rd base is the #1 unwritten rule of baseball. Sure, you can score on a wild pitch or infield hit from 3rd, but those odds are not much greater than being thrown out at 3rd. The reward isn't worth the risk, IMO.

The Best Right Fielder in College Baseball (sic)

That was a phenomenal throw...

Why did the third-base coach look so mad? Did the runner take off late? Or did the coach tell him not to run?

-m.

Just think it’s cause he was out.  Incredible throw. Yes, you don’t want to make first or third out at 3d. But he makes it 99 times out of 100. No problem with him running there. Medium deep fly ball. RF had to move a little to his left to set up. He just unleaded a Clementeesque throw. Tip your hat.

Glad Stanford won. Hated the way it happened. Never like to see a team lose a game like that. Unless, of course, it’s USC or the Dodgers….

Probably already way too much talk about lights after Monday's game, especially since it was more an issue of time of day (twilight) than amount or height of lighting, but fwiw....

There probably are NCAA regulations on lighting for baseball, though they are not in the baseball rule book, per se.

At our NAIA school, we recently built a new field for our softball program. The NAIA generally defers to the NCAA on most rules regarding sports. When we built the filed, we wanted to make sure we would be eligible to host post-season competitions. So we found the NCAA guidelines for hosting of softball games. There are rules about such matters as, iirc, minimum and maximum home run distance, minimum foul ground, and lighting. There are probably similar NCAA regulations for baseball fields.

Btw,if you can forgive a couple of minor malapropisms by those not often on camera, there is a ling to a video our architects put together about our new field at the bottom of this page: https://www.eapc.net/project/dickinson-athletic-complex/   We are pretty proud of it (though I rather doubt that I Stanford will be calling me for advice about building a softball field!). If you ever get to Dickinson, ND, stop in so I can show it to you.

It is true, I had heard that people were complaining that the outfield lights were too bright and it was hard to watch games. Not sure how much of this is true or not, but I do think that the baseball field is the only field with these type of lights.

I'm in my 70s with mild cataracts.  Halogen headlights hurt my eyes.  The lights in Sunken Diamond have never bothered me.  (Caveat: small sample size.)

ESPN+ On Demand is still showing all three games as available to watch.

Look for the "Replay" option.  There's a bar near the top of the screen with dates.  You can scroll it left and right.  No idea how far back it goes, but the Stanford regional is still there.

Re CWS pairings.  By my count there are three teams in the CWS that were not among the 8 national seeds: TCU, Tennessee, and Oral Roberts.  I realize that brackets determine who plays who, but #8 Stanford playing #1 Wake Forest seems a tad unfair.  Meanwhile, LSU gets to play Tennessee.

NCAA needs to toss out the brackets and match the final eight teams so the seeded teams don't play each other as much in the first round.

I agree. Fixing the brackets before the final field is set doesn't make sense to me.

It's just like every other NCAA tournament. Should they reseed the Sweet 16 in basketball? What about the Frozen 4 in Ice Hockey? Everybody who makes the MCWS is playing well, so I don't think it really matters. Just win, baby.

And... Wake Forest is the first #1 seed to make the CWS since 2018.

College World Series 2023: 10 things you need to know about the field - The Athletic

Some nice comparisons of the teams.  All teams except Stanford have at least one starting pitcher who is a transfer.  TCU has a grad transfer pitcher from Cal.

Esquer is the only head coach who is coaching his alma mater.

Wake Forest, T4th in HRs with 129. Stanford, 10th in HRs with 117. Stanford and LSU have the most CWS appearances of the finalists with 19 each.

That grad transfer from TCU was recruited by Esquer's staff before he left Cal. He was ok for Cal, and I can see why he used his Covid year to go to a program who had a chance for post season play!

Now compare ERAs.  Wake Forest is a complete team.

If we are going to play the CWS on paper then give the trophy to WF and move on, otherwise lets play the series.  No questions WF has the best pitching, and more, but we still have to play the games.  I hope we acquit ourselves well.

WF plays in a cracker jack box of a stadium. Let's see if they are able to put up the runs in a legit sized yard.

310 LF, 300 RF. There gaps are 370 LC and 365 RC is what they play in now

Charles Schwab field:

335 down the lines, 408 CF, 375 in the gaps.

Isn't this all the more impressive that they lead in ERA given ACC competition?. Agreed, we still need to play the games. I just hope it's not as lopsided as it might appear on paper.

Though Wake may have the number 1 pitcher in the CWS, I think our offense will give them a challenge. Can our pitching keep the score down? Dunno.
