Rex Grossman was the kicker on the Colts team, and the grandfather of the semi-maligned Rex Grossman. Rex had one amazing season, 13-3 with the Bears. Otherwise, his career record was 12-19 as a starter.

The other was Herman Wedemeyer of St. Mary's, brother of Charlie Wedemeyer, longtime Los Gatos football coach. He was also an actor playing "Duke" Lukela for 143 episodes on Hawaii 5-0. As a football player, his nickname was "The Flyin' Hawaiian."

Wedemeyer had an interesting football variation on the hidden ball trick. At the end of his Wikipedia entry.

K - you're askin' with a local boy in the audience....

Also, I'm assuming you're referring to their other real life professions (if any) - correct me if I'm wrong.

There were a bunch of other actors cast as cops in the original series besides Squirmin' Herman and Jack Lord - James MacArthur (son of Helen Hayes, actor), Kam Fong Chung (local guy, other profession cop with HPD) Gil Kauhi, aka Zulu (another local guy, beach boy & entertainer) & Al Harrington ('58!, history teacher/professor & entertainer).

Darned, the list I had is dated, and you are right that it is possible that some COVID era guys make it in.  Definitely Bo Nix would have been in the top five.  But it doesn’t change the answer to the question ”what do they have in common?”

I don’t know if any other COVID-era QB’s have been able to make it to the top 5.

Colt McCoy (Texas): 45-8
Andy Dalton (TCU): 42-7
David Greene (Georgia): 42-10
Peyton Manning (Tennessee): 39-6

Between them, they had 0 national championships and 0 Voldemort awards.

Bo Nix went 43-18 in his five seasons in Auburn and Oregon, which would place him third on the list.  As he didn’t win a national title or Voldemort either (coming in third behind Jayden Daniels and Penix), the observation holds, unless there has been another QB in the last 13 years to exceed 42 career wins and come in front of Greene.

A graphic shown during the Iowa-Iowa State game last Saturday referenced this topic (the reason for me not posting a response) listing Moore and Mark Gronowski as tied at #1.  The next several players were Division 1, FCS players (note, all but one of Gronowski’s wins were with South Dakota State). Gronowski will post his 51st win tomorrow after Iowa trounces UMass.

So, with under 20 games left in the MLB season, we still have not had any no-hitters.  Yoshinobu Yamamoto got close, giving up no hits against Baltimore for 8 2/3 innings before giving up a home run in the ninth.  In some delicious irony, the Dodger bullpen imploded and LA lost the game.  No hitters are pretty rare, with only 326 no-nos in MLB history out of about 250,000 total games, or about one in every 750ish games.  Since there are  2,430 total MLB games in a season you would expect about 3 no-hitters a season.  Thus, seasons without a no-hitter are actually rarer than you might think.

So, the trivia question is this: when was the last MLB season without a no-hitter?

Smart guess, but no.  There were actually two no-hitters in 2020.

August 25th, Lucas Giolito no-hit the Pirates and the White Sox won 4-0.
Exactly 5 years ago (Sept 13), Alec Mills No-hit the Brewers and the Cubs won 12-0.

I seem to recall that there was a year without any no-hitters in the last dozen years or so, but I can't recall the precise year.

My subjective impression is that there tend to be more no-hitters in September, when rosters have expanded to include minor leaguers and a lot of teams are just playing out the schedule with no particular motivation. I haven't tried to quantify that. If it's true, then there might be better than normal odds of a no-hitter in the next couple of weeks.

That's a sound assumption. Here's the number of no-hitters per calendar month, including the postseason:

April, 41
May, 54
June, 53
July, 46
August, 50
September, 68
October, 9
November, 1 (2022 World series)

There have been 39 no-hitters in the last 10 years, so, notwithstanding this year’s drought, we are in a bit of  “golden age” of no-hitters.

Last year without a no-no was 2005.

Some interesting stats in that article.

Only 29 seasons have been devoid of a no-hitter.
By 25-year span, the 2000’s have had an average of 3.1 no-hitters per year (of course, some of that is more games and more teams).
1926-1950 had the fewest no-hitters, averaging only 1 a year.
