1) I thought Kiki Rice was more articulate than her coach in that press conference.  I'm very impressed with her.  I bet she would have thrived at Stanford. [EDIT: FYI, I've read on UCLA chatboards that Betts is fine, it's just an illness, and she could return this week.  That would explain why Kiki said she hasn't been with the team off the court either.  Hopefully that's true and we'll see her in the matchup this week.]

Yeah, I too, have really enjoyed watching Kiki on and off the court. I remember when she was in high school and committed to UCLA, on one of the remarks she made, she indicated her ability to "play her game" at UCLA and we discussed on this board that someone like her with her explosive offensive game on the permitter may have found Stanford to be too much of a system, whereas she can be the go-to at an up and coming program like UCLA.

However, the irony is, it seems in her two years at UCLA, she really has been more of a steady lead guard, running the show and I have been underwhelmed by her offensive game in most games. She really has struggled to hit her perimeter shot lately and didn't make that freshman to sophomore jump like some top recruits tend to do. She's still very young, but with Betts coming in and Osborne staying a 5th year (and Jones being a shot heavy teammate), there's a lot of other weapons too. Hopefully for Kiki's sake, by her junior and senior years, I'd like to see her be in the 17 ppg range and above 40% on three's.

I think Stanford winning the PAC 12 regular conference will definitely bolster
Kiki's chances of being named 2nd or 3rd Team AA.

Why aim that low?

Excellent article in the Athletic about male practice players in women's college basketball. It's mostly about Iowa and how tough it is to go against Caitlin Clark, but Stanford gets a paragraph or two, along with several other teams.

Of all the recruits we've followed the last 5 years, my number one fave was Brink, Rice was second, and I must admit, because of the Susan Rice connection, I thought she would join us. I've seen her in several different environments and agree she is smart and very articulate. She seems happy at UCLA. It didn't help that Close coached the Under 17's a couple years ago. They liked her.

thank you for mentioning tara not attending haley's draft night. isn't that on remembers-everyone's-birthday tara rather than on haley? i noticed that the video of the history of stanford's teams left out haley from the section on the recent national championship. is that on haley? tara assigned haley to run the point at least 50% of the time last year when we had no experienced point guard. that led to many critiques of haley. imo haley did what tara asked even though it ruined haley's game.

tara is now supportive of nil, but i recall her being cool and skeptical when nil was just starting out. haley made the first forays into nil, and i can easily imagine tara being critical at first.

blaming transfers out on haley? i don't think so! there was a logjam at the post - betts still wouldn't start at stanford this year. the higher-ranked indya nivar backed up lepolo.

blaming our poor play last year on haley? i don't think so! with the departure of kiana, anna wilson, and the hull twins, we had 5 top posts but no star point guard and no star wings.

p.s. thanks for posting haley's interview of lauren betts. they have a great time talking. both are exuberant and delightful. they clearly enjoy each other. betts calls haley a "10 out of 10" and references their close friendship over many years. betts says it was hard to leave stanford because she loved the players, but she had to because she "did not feel supported." given the context, she appears to be saying not supported by the staff.

haley is an unusual interviewer. she makes no attempt to be polished like ros and chiney. she is in the let-your-personality-show school, like richard sherman and charles Barkley - except playfully cheerful rather than playfully challenging. i like her style very much. it's a wonderful interview. i encourage everyone to watch.

Here's a long interview with Haley on the Knucklehead podcast.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk5nWhPGDUo

A good portion of the interview is spent about her time at Stanford (around 8 minute to 22 minute mark in the video). She also has some good things to say about how Stanford prepared her to not waste her money towards the end of the interview.

They asked her what she purchased with her first check, a Louis Vitton bag? No, I invested it.

Some Stanford alum news I had missed: Nneka Ogwumike announced she isn't returning to the LA Sparks this summer. She's testing the free agent market.

The Sparks also just announced they have traded for the 4th overall pick (they already have the 2nd). With Nneka's departure and the Sparks holding 2 of the top 4 picks, odds are up that Brink will end up at the Sparks should she declare for the draft this season.

That's where Brink wants to go, right?

I'm hoping she wants to be on the new Bay Area team, decides to play her COVID year at Stanford, then gets taken in the expansion draft by the SF whatever they will be called

Good kid who doesn't deserve this. I'll miss seeing her in a WSU uniform. She brought WSU from obscurity to contender.

Unranked Oklahoma just defeated #2 Kansas State 66-63. The turmoil for ranked teams continues. I'm hoping Stanford can avoid that this coming challenging weekend

I don't know a thing about KState's team, but for exactly that reason I was wondering if they are for real.

I am hoping too that Stanford can beat UCLA and USC, and I don't underestimate how tough that will be!

Ayoka Lee, Kansas State's star player, who is on the Wade and Wooden watch lists, injured her ankle on Jan 19th and is supposed to be out for four weeks.

I think a fully healthy Kansas State is a legit top 4 team. There was a different key player out in the rematch with Iowa that they ended up losing.  If everyone's healthy come tournament time they could be very dangerous.  (Though I think Stanford matches up with them well should we end up facing them.)

Just past mid-season assessment of Pac 12 from Her Hoop Stats -- no surprises in here, though I do find the kudos for Scott Rueck worth noting, and to me, he deserves it. Also like the appreciation for Kiki, and strong statement re Cam.

Also, from today's version of Creme's bracketology, Stanford is still a #1 seed but not the predicted automatic qualifier. That's Colorado, which Creme has as a #2 seed.

HerHoopsStats says the following about Colorado:

"Their 9-2 conference record is tied with Stanford for first in the league. They have the advantage over the Cardinal since they took the only regular-season meeting between the two teams. Things could not be going better in Boulder."

That's a little more of an optimistic take for Colorado than I think is warranted.  Colorado has 4 conference games left against top 25 teams (3 on the road).  By contrast, Stanford's only ranked conference opponent left is Oregon State.  That game is on the road but Stanford also matches up very well vs Oregon St.  Colorado may have the tiebreaker at the moment but Stanford has the far easier path to earning the #1 seed in the conference tournament.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - M T - 02-09-2024

Creme is perhaps fudging his bets. If either Colorado or Stanford wins the automatic bid, the other team will have had to lose.

If Colorado stumbles again in the regular season and Stanford doesn’t, we would likely face the #4 seed in the semis and the #2/3 seed in the finals while they face #2/3 and #1. In that case, advantage Stanford.

If Colorado doesn’t stumble, we’re looking up that hill.

And in either case, most any of the 12 could surprise any team during the remainder of the season or in the Ultimate PAC-12 tournament.
