Another picture-perfect day for recruiting students & athletes to Stanford.
Monday's game time forecast:
1PM: 73º 38% 12mph NNW Sunny
4PM: 75º 34% 16mph NW Sunny
A dry day. The only chance of precipitation is from baseballs being hit into the troposphere. If you can't get a ticket, park yourself beyond the left field fence and shag some fly balls. Here's hoping they're Stanford's.

1pm game on a Monday makes it very difficult for those with jobs to attend the game. I suspect there will be a lot of empty seats that would be filled if the game were at 4pm or later.

Pitching Status Today.
Stanford is in a curious spot with respect to pitching today. On the one hand, Stanford has used 9 separate pitchers in the past two days. On the other hand, there is nobody who is necessarily 100% out today.
Neither Dixon nor Dowd have pitched yet in the Supers, and I suspect they are 1 and 2 today in some order.
Dixon has been ahead of Dowd over the second half of the season, but Dowd pitched better in the regional (was quite good).
The only other regular who hasn't pitched yet is Braden Montgomery. Using him from the pen is tricky as it takes away the DH.
However, nobody on the staff has thrown more than 47 pitches this weekend. Brandt Pancer, Alex Williams and Quinn Matthews are the only guys who have thrown over 40. Now I would be shocked to see Alex Williams, but not really anybody else.
Coaching strategy was interesting. Esquer seemed to start playing for Sunday/Monday by the end of the second inning on Saturday as he used the lower end of the bullpen to get through the game. At the time I thought it was for the best - at least up until the ninth inning heroics. Yesterday he went with the best of the pen. I thought with a big lead he might try to get by without using Matthews, but nobody pitched a lot.
Now we'll see, but I think essentially the whole staff is available at least for a short outing.
[Two back of the bullpen cases interest me a lot.
Max Meier only pitched 7 innings all season long. Then he had an appearance in the conference tournament, and now has pitched four times for 6.2 innings in the NCAA tournament. He seems to have suddenly won the coaches' trust.
Cody Jensen had a promising frosh year in 2019 and was perhaps our best pitcher in the tough super regional series at Mississippi State. He struggled (along with the whole team) in the aborted 2020 season. Got injured and red shirted in 2021. This year he has had quite a few appearances, but hadn't appeared in almost a month and hadn't appeared in a weekend game since mid-April until Saturday. He pitched well on Saturday, with only a HBP marring an otherwise perfect two innings. If he were to return, I could see him as a major contributor next year. ]

UConn is in a pretty similar position pitching wise to Stanford. Outside of their Saturday starter Gallagher and Peterson (who is suspended) they have all hands on deck (expect their inning eater who came in the game in the second and did a wonderful job saving the rest of the pen). UConn has gone with Enzo, the Harvard grad transfer, as their number 3 starter all year long. The UConn folks in the know seem to think Coach Penders is going to switch things up and go with freshman Ian Cooke. No matter the order, I expect to see Cooke and Enzo from UConn. Cooke is a freshman with big upside and experience starting and coming in from the pen. Stanford is feasting on fastballs and Enzo basically does not have a fast ball so he might pose some challenges similar to what Stanford ran into in the middle innings yesterday. If the ball is flying we could see 7+ pitchers from each side before this one is over!
It appears UConn has published their lineup and it is indeed Cooke starting on the mound for them. He started their game 7 at Maryland last week.

Historically, Stanford's Omaha-aimed teams have done so on the back of a pitching-strong team. This team is different. William's regular season aside, this team is one that will go as far as our bats, with (hopefully) a quilt-pattern mishmash of pitchers.
As of this moment, I believe that everyone in the lineup, 1 through 9, is hitting .300 (correction: Montgomery just slipped under .300 yesterday).
UConn also into their pen now.

The UConn pitcher threw two off-speed pitches way off the plate, so Huff was looking for the 2-1 fastball, and got it middle-middle. Optimal situation, and he did not miss it. Man. He hit it full barrel. The left fielder didn't even move. I wonder how far it was.

Tommy Troy adds a solo HR to lead off the fifth inning, making it 9-3 Stanford. Feeling cautiously optimistic. UConn is on pitcher #5 now.

Wow that fair. If so do they place the runners? Looked like chalk?
Sad it’s foul

Umps and refs are always stubborn, and stick to their wrong calls, unless they are forced to change... That clearly kicked up chalk, how the 3rd base umpire blows that is beyond me...

I dont understand how they can call that foul.

These umps really suck. That last strike on Park was clearly a ball. Chalk dust doesn't lie. GMAFB.
