The coaches were looking at film on a player from the opposing team and spotted him.

I've been looking at Hudl reels. Looks like Lund could be Marecic II. His camp digital at LB is impressive covering receivers. On offense looks like a big banger.

How common is it for schools to retire football jersey numbers? It seems like you would quickly run out of numbers if you do that, considering you have 85 players and only 100 numbers to choose from (101 if '0' is different from '00'). Duke has retired half the numbers under 50 it seems and the roster is full of odd numbers now.

When 7 was retired, I was under the impression it was partly because of how many great players had worn it, but a google search reveals it was indeed for Elway specifically. Kind of tough on a guy like Toby to learn they'll never have "their number" retired, though I guess they could always do a cheesy ceremony to add Toby as an asterisk to #7 or something.

Raises the question though, does CMAC deserve to have his number retired?

Stanford like most teams has 105 players.  Like is 2 Irwin or Simmons ?  😀

Several stars have worn the No 5 jersey at Stanford. It took nearly a generation to retire No 7, and even longer for No 16, so I don't see any reason to retire No 5 anytime soon.

As much as the athletic department says retiring a jersey is for a player's performance at Stanford only, I think his professional performance is taken into account. Plunkett has a couple of Super Bowl rings and a lot of pro longevity.

In 1927 Ernie Nevers gave up 2 HRs to Babe Ruth.  Not sure that got his jersey retired 😜

I completely agree, but it (influence of pro career) really applies more to Elway than to Plunkett. Plunkett won Stanford's only H-Trophy and a Rose Bowl. Elway is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I made note of the number as well, but it makes perfect sense. The message isn't to McCaffrey that his number won't be retired, it's a message to Wedington -- We want you, and we think you're the next McCaffrey.

And even though they won't retire #5 any time soon, they also won't give it out any time soon, not to Wedington or anyone else. After Luck left, someone asked Shaw if #12 would be worn by anyone, and he responded, "Not yet. That number's still a little bit hot right now. We'll let it cool off a bit." I'd expect the same thing with #5.

I agree, but we argued that one at the time Elway's was retired, and I didn't think it was worth bringing up.

I agree. It's no disrespect to CMAC. If anything, It's setting him up as the goal. ANyway, I think Lombardi is off base here. I don't think Luck would be insulted or annoyed if they sent a similar piece to Mills but with the number 12.
