I would guess at this point that we might see little action by Zaidi. I’m still hoping Ta. Rogers, Conforto and Estrada are sent packing. However, someone has to blink to make that happen.

Pure salary dump... Soler never translated last year's 36 HRs (32 of which would have been HRs at Oracle) to 30+ at Oracle. Although he's at 116 OPS+, above his career OPS+ of 113, and he's always been a strong second half player...and he's not all that far off of last year's pace:
2023: .250/.341/.512/.853
2024: .240/.330/.419/.749
He's usually .900+ WAR in the last two months of the season, so he probably would have got there, more by doubles and triples than HRs, of course. And Luke Jackson and his 5.40 ERA needed to go. Both were expensive for what they brought to the table.
Matzek's done with his 9.90 ERA. Ceballos played a year at Oregon, did well, has played in high A this year, nothing to write home about: .259/.353/.354/.707. Makes decent contact, but projects as a 1B. For 6'3", 225 lbs. shows doubles power not HR power. Stranger things have happened, I guess...

Dumping a couple guys who aren’t in the team’s plans for next season along with getting significant salary relief in 2025 (they have to get under the CBT limit, otherwise the penalties start to pile up) was exactly what SF should be doing at the trading deadline. I am hoping for more trades today.
Update: It appears Luciano may be returning from Sacramento to be the DH as well as play in the field.

Soler's OPS since May 31 was .856. He crushed it in June and July. Still Luciano's OPS in May was .986. I know he's doing OK in Sacto, but he might bring something interesting to the table.

Soler was a major bust. Luciano is the future. I am more excited about the Giants today than at any point in the recent past. Finally, Zaidi is thinking about the future with a roster full of young talent rather than the present with a roster full of broken down vets well past their sell by date.
I still have grave doubts about Zaidi but I must give him credit for trading Soler with no salary retained.
UPDATE: Cobb is on his way to Cleveland thus opening the door for Birdsong. Another great move!

Among players with more than a handful of appearances, Soler was second in OPS in June behind Ramos and second in July behind Yaz. The Giants need a bat, and they had one.
Gotta wonder about the Cobb trade, as well. I thought he was part of the calvary. . . .

Having six starters was one too many, especially if one of these isn't/may not be ready to pitch at a high level immediately. I am guessing the Giants don't think Cobb will be healthy enough/conditioned enough to help them in the short term. He may be great sometime in September, but the Giants need to pile up wins now or it won't matter.

Glad the young guys are going to get to play. I'd really like to see Luciano and Birdsong take root.
Separately, really like the Canha family. He played in our local Little League, also played at Bellarmine and Cal.
Mark's not having a great year, but he replicates what Soler was doing. Has a strong eye, OBP of .337 this year, .348 career. Gets HBP a lot (11 this year), still has pretty good wheels as a 35 year old. 1B, DH, corner outfield, PH.

Giants traded HoFer Rogers Hornsby for IF Jimmy Welsh in 1927. The next season, Welsh hit .248 and played in 38 games. Hornsby let the NL in BA (.387), OBP (.498), SLG (.632), OPS (1.130), and walks (107). 188 hits, 42 doubles 7 triples, 21 HRs, 94 RBIs. Struck out 41 times.
To get Hornsby, the Giants had traded HoFer Frankie Frisch and a pitcher named Ring. After the trade, Frisch finished 2nd in MVP balloting the next yea and again a few years later and won the MVP four years later. He also played in the first three all star games.
A double trade that just sucked.
Best trade...Giants had a dominant pitcher named Amos Rusie who had five straight seasons of 30+ wins. Rusie's arm was failing, and the Giants' owner agreed to trade him to the Reds for a 20 year old pitcher named Christy Mathewson. Rusie pitched three more games, then retired. Mathewson won 373 games and was a member of the first Hall of Fame class. Despite the fact that the New York media roasted the Giants for trading Rusie, that trade turned out pretty well...

Mark needs to be a platoon vs. LHP, when this year he hit .286/.400/.457 (140 wRC+), .349xwOBA, 45.3% hard hit% and 9.4% barrel. Numbers vs. RHPs are much worse.
