I continue to be annoyed that baseball lists things like homeruns, strike outs, etc. etc. as totals on the season - regardless of number of games played. It doesn't make a comparison meaningful.
In this case, another thing that makes comparison difficult is that the competition varied drastically. The Big East is not a very good baseball conference, the Pac 12 is.
There are some interesting bits there, nonetheless.
UConn ranks relatively much higher in fly outs than ground outs, i.e. they get a lot of their outs by fly balls.
Maybe that's a good sign, because Stanford makes a lot of fly balls home runs. [Though night games at sunken diamonds make that more difficult.]
Perhaps related, UConn has allowed a relatively high number of home runs for a superregional team in a weak conference. Stanford allowed very few - at least until they allowed a season high 3 in the first game against Texas State.
Stanford's biggest pitching problem is that they walk too many guys - that's clear from those stats.
Both teams offenses are more power hitting than steady hitter/on-base types. Stanford more so.

That loss to Rice in 2003 is ingrained in my memory and it still stings. A throwing error by the pitcher to 1st base costed Stanford a championship.
The controversial UConn/MD interference play brought that game back into focus for me. It seems like the call there, which the MD coach agreed with, was inconsistent with the call in the Stanford/Rice game. Must be a hard rule to apply. Unsurprisingly, I thought they got the call wrong in Omaha.
That game and that CWS final series was a big blow in our (i.e., Mini and yours truly) many trips to try to see Stanford win a national championship. My memory isn't very reliable anymore, but I think that Stanford won the second game, then lost big in the final game. IIRC, that was Ryan Garko's final college game. Tough one for Mini, as he was playing catcher in youth ball at the time and Garko was perhaps his favorite Stanford player of all time. We waited in the 'blatt as long as we could--I think we were the last ones kicked out of the park. Not sure why, but it seemed like the end of an era, after lots of trips to Omaha for the CWS. And Mini was hoping he would see Garko to wish him well. Of course, I probably have all of this wrong, as the human memory is very unreliable.
Mini and I finally did get to see that Stanford natty--last year in San Antonio at the women's Final Four (though it was not officially called that until this year, which was ridiculous).
It would be great for Stanford to start a new tradition of lots of trips to Omaha with a second consecutive visit. Mini's college baseball heart is torn in half this week. As a UConn PhD student, the one sport he has really embraced there is baseball. [He sat next to me screaming for TVD and the Stanford women, against UConn, in Minneapolis this year, as he will never trade TVD for Gino, no matter where he goes to school.] But he has been a Stanford baseball fan for almost three decades, including this year. I told him he should think of it this way: No matter what happens, he has a team going to Omaha.
Have never been to the new stadium. Probably won't be able to go even if Stanford gets there this year, but I haven't completely given up hope.
If UConn wins, I will gladly root for them during the CWS. Mini has rooted for my school for all his life. I will enthusiastically root for his school, as I did last week, if they end our season. But I hope they don't.

Tell Mini that where you go to schoo for a doctorate doesn't count for sports loyalty; all that time working on that thesis does not allow time to build a sports loyalty to that school - so you go back to your roots and instinctive fandom!

Well, that doesn’t describe me. My PhD is from Stanford. And I’ve been a fan since I was in grad school. But maybe economics grad students are different.

(06-09-2022, 09:21 AM)CTcard Wrote: Pitching Notes.
UConn has announced that they will be flipping their #1 and #2 starters for this weekend.
This is because their #1 guy (Austin Peterson) pitched both in the Friday game (started, 109 pitches) and the Monday game (bullpen, 50 pitches).
Their #2 guy (Pat Gallagher) pitched the Saturday game so will be on the typical one week between starts.
Alex Williams also pitched the Saturday game for us, so no doubt he will be the game 1 starter.
The strength of the UConn team is their starting pitching (at least UConn fans clearly think so).
They have a fairly traditionally structured staff with clear #1, #2, and #3 starters and a designated closer.
#1 starter - Austin Peterson, 11-2, ERA 3.30, WHIP 1.06 (my calculation, UConn doesn't provide it)
#2 starter - Pat Gallagher, 10-3, ERA 3.17, WHIP 1.21
#3 starter - Enzo Stefannoni, 6-1, ERA 3.20, WHIP 1.11
Closer - Justin Willis, 15 Saves, ERA 4.68, WHIP 1.24
[For comparison, here are similar numbers for Stanford, except we don't have such clear roles. And the competition is different.]
Alex Williams, 8-2, ERA 2.35, WHIP 0.99
Quinn Matthews, 9-1, 7 Saves, ERA 2.69, WHIP 1.22
Joey Dixon, 6-3, ERA 3.53, WHIP 1.30
Drew Dowd, 6-0, ERA 5.00, WHIP 1.48
Ty Uber, 4-1, ERA 4.88, WHIP 1.35
I haven't found a lot of evaluations of the UConn pitchers. The following is what I could find. I hope MiniBlueHawk will chime in with better info.
Gallagher and Peterson were both Big East all conference pitchers, but not pitcher of the year.
I have seen slightly higher draft projections for Gallagher than Peterson, though none of these pitchers seem to be particularly highly rated for the MLB draft. (Maybe - MiniBlueHawk thinks Peterson will be a day two pick (rounds 3-10), which isn't bad)
Peterson gets a lot of strike outs (12/nine innings). That's fewer than Cooper Hjerpe at Oregon State but more than anyone else in the Pac 12. I don't really know his pitch repertoire, but did read that his slider had been his go to pitch, felt he lost it a bit in previous years, but it came back this year.
I did find an MLB draft writeup for Gallagher. It describes him somewhat similarly to how I would describe Alex Williams. Doesn't have an overwhelming fastball (usually high 80s), or a killer breaking ball, but has four pitches and has good control of position and velocity.
Stefanoni is their Ivy League grad transfer (ours is Joe Lomuscio). Doesn't strike out a lot of guys, doesn't walk a lot of guys (but has hbp quite a few), and keeps opponents from scoring much.
They have a lot of guys in their pen with decent numbers.
Peterson is the one I was referring to as the ace and second day draft guy (my former classmate is a scout and that's the evaluation he provided). UConn, much like Stanford, has had a lot of successful series start with a long, quality, outing from their ace. This has allowed Coach Penders to have a relatively quick trigger going to a deep bullpen if Gallagher or Enzo struggle.
Gallagher has a tendency to make things interesting for himself early in an outing. If and when he finds his rythm he can breeze through the middle innings. Last year Gallagher had a solid regular season and a disappointing outing in the Notre Dame regional (it turns out he was tipping his pitches). Last weekend he had a really solid outing against Maryland to stay in the winners bracket.
Enzo is a crafty/junk ball thrower that had a very impressive start to the year. Lately, he has rarely been given the opportunity to get through the lineup more than twice. His not traditional approach usually allows him to get through the lineup once without much of an issue. I except the bottom of the Stanford lineup to give him some problems (the same portion that handled Texas State's offspeed , offerings well). I expect if Enzo gets into trouble early freshman Ian Cooke will be called upon. Cooke is the real deal and more than just an inning eater. Enzo also pitched in a regional when he was Harvard.
The UConn bullpen has plenty of options. With no 3 batter minimum Coach Penders often uses guys for just one batter.

I just got back from the game. What a roller coaster of emotions. I gotta say, it's been a couple decades since I've been to a game at Sunken Diamond, and it's just as polite and non-hostile of a ballpark as I remember...although the fabled heckler Larry was not present tonight. Maybe that's what we were missing. My voice is hoarse...I didn't really get loud until later in the game.
Lot of missed opportunities early on (esp in the second inning) that could have made a difference. But those UConn bats were hot tonight, and Alex Williams didn't have the stuff for whatever reason. I wasn't sure about some of the pitching substitutions by the coaches...Cody Jensen was excellent in relief, and I think he should have come in earlier. Hope the pitching staff is ready to make a stand tomorrow.
I actually hadn't planned on going to the game. I'm in the area for unrelated reasons, and it just so happened that I was lucky enough to schedule this and buy actual paper tickets off of someone selling near the box office. Many stars aligned for me; they did not align for the Stanford bats and pitching early in the game. Wish I could have met everyone on the board who was at the game in person.
Do or die tomorrow.

We made too many mistakes today besides the pitching. They got an unearned run in the first after the third out was dropped.
We also made a base running error in the inning where our runner was out at home. On the hit when he was on first, he really should have been on third. Don't know if he didn't look at the third base coach, but he stopped at second. He should have been on third, scoring easily on the next play in the infield.
We ended up needing those 2 runs, obviously. What's up with Alex Williams? Twice now that he gets pummeled around by the opponent.

I was on a flight and splurged on wifi to watch. What a ridiculous game for lack of a better term. While the Williams situation certainly has me questioning how deep Stanford could go in Omaha, yesterday was not a total disaster for the Card. Pitching was spared for the most part, UConn had to use their closer (and watch a lot of balls leave the yard) and Brock Jones is back! UConn has their ace ready to go after 150+ pitches last weekend. He, like Williams, had lots of deep 100+ pitch outings this year. Scoring early and often will be necessary. Once again Stanford has an interesting decision as to when to us Matthews. Hopefully Dixon (if he's the starter today) can have a quality outing and give the bats a chance to create some separation.

Pitching has never been a strength of this team, the bat has been what got us where we are. I wonder if any team has ever hit 8 home runs in a game and lost. Williams has pitched some gems for us, but against better hitting teams, he has not done so well. Have we leaned on his arm too much this season. Lets hope the pitching committee is ready to go today.
