Either Dan Brouthers or Roger Connor.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BostonCard - 05-09-2022

I should have known that that would be a hanging curveball for you trivia mavens.

Roger Connor.  hit 138 home runs, 10 years as a Giant.  Never led the league in home runs, but had the career title.  And Barry Bonds, coincidentally, only hit more than 49 home runs once and only led the league in HRs twice.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BostonCard - 05-09-2022

Alright, the single season home run record now, which is held by Barry Bonds, who broke Mark McGuire’a record, who broke Roger Marris’ record, who broke Babe Ruth’s record. Ruth broke his own record three times, but whose record did Ruth break?

Depends on whether it starts in 1901 with the advent of the American League or pre 1901. Have no idea of that but I think post 1901 Ruth broke Gavvy Cravets record. Twenty something.

Who is the first person to be nominated in seven different categories at the Academy Awards?

Sticks in my head that it was someone named Ned Williamson.

EDIT: It was him, in 1884. Some interesting points:
1) At the time, the home team got to set rules. Cap Anson was the manager and captain and decided that balls hit over the fence would be home runs.
2) The fences at the CHicago park in 1884 were EXTREMELY short: 186 feet in left, 190 feet in right, 300 feet in center. They moved after that season.
3) 25 of Williamson's 27 home runs were hit at home in that tiny ballpark.
4) The prior season, Williamson set the record for doubles with 49, beating the prior record of 37.
5) Incidentally, Williamson never hit more than nine home runs or 27 doubles in any other season during his 13 year career.
6) He was a slick fielding third baseman, leading the league in assists five straight years.
7) He died at the age of 36, tuberculosis and edema. And he was in an unmarked grave until last November when SABR rectified that situation and noted his records on his headstone.
8) His background appears to be similar to that of Babe Ruth:

New trivia
In 1968 Pete Rose led the NL in hitting who were second and third ? Hint Phogge and I saw them play a number of times
Neme the 9 future Hall of Famers who hit less than 294 ?
For those younger than me yes that’s why they lowered the mound before 1969

1968 batting:  The clue indicates a Giant (or former Giant).  Was Matty Alou one of the two guys?  He was a great average hitter even in the year “no hits”.

Harmon Killebrew, Reggie Jackson, Ozzie Smith, Luis Aparicio are four low BA players in the hall.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BostonCard - 05-10-2022

Nice job, Mick; it was Williamson, who hit 27 home runs in 1884, to break the previous record (14, by Harry Stivey).  That record stood 35 years until Ruth broke it.  Ruth held the record for 42 years, and Marris’ record stood 37 years.  Bonds has held it 20 years and counting.

I’m guessing some of the HoF pitchers had pretty low BA’s, LOL.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 05-10-2022

Shocked that nobody knew hat Kenneth Branagh is the only person to receive Academy Award nominations in seven categories.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-10-2022

National League guys, for the batting leaders etc.
Yes Matty Alou was 2nd. Who was third, Phogge you and I saw him play many times

9 NL Hall of Famers.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 05-10-2022

Either Clemente or Felipe.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-11-2022

Felipe Alou finished third
Now the 9 NL future Hall of Famers who hit less than 294 in 1968

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 05-11-2022

McCovey, Kaline, Banks, Cepeda, Killebrew, Mays, Mantle, Jackson, Aparicio, Brooks Robinson, Stargell, Oliva, Billy Williams, Aaron. and I think there may be more Bobbbbbb.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-11-2022

National league
Clemente
Mays
McCovey
Aaron
Billy Williams
Staub
Perez

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 05-11-2022

Rusty Staub is not in the HOF.

Stargell, Cepeda and Santo hit under .294.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BostonCard - 05-11-2022

Ok, let’s talk about sacrifice.

Who has the record for sacrifice flys in a season?
Who has the record for sacrifice hits (bunts) in a season?  What percent of their plate appearances were bunts?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 05-11-2022

Mantle
