Bad S. Howard gave up 6 runs, I think, in two innings today. He had a good game last time out, though he often seems kinda hitable to me.
Howard reminds me of Mike Kickham. Throws an eminently hittable ball.
5-2 homestand. 2 out of 3 vs Dodgers. I’ll take it.
Starting Tuesday, three games in Atlanta (46-36), three in Cleveland (52-30, Stephen Vogt is doing a great job with them), then two home series against the Blue Jays (38-45) and Twins (47-37). Be nice to go 7-5 against those teams before the All-Star Break.
8-4 would get them over the .500 mark at the break. If they hope to be a player in the second half, they need to start stacking series wins regardless of the opponent.

Fine by me. The Giants are currently 16-25 on the road, they have three series against teams that are 10+ games over .500, two of those series are on the road, and their pitching is decimated. 8-4, as you suggest, would be a .667 winning percentage. The best road team in the majors is the Yankees, they're at .625 (30-18).
Still..some interesting stats from Grant Brisbee in The Athletic (highly recommended if you don't already have it):
1. Thairo Estrada is the best defensive 2B in the NL by Outs Against Average. Only Marcus Semien is ahead of him in MLB. Great range, both directions, weak arm, but quick release and accurate throws.
2. Giants pitchers throw the most pitches resulting in groundballs in the majors.
3. Giants pitchers have the most called strikes in the majors...Logan Webb is tops in MLB, most called strikes.
4. Matt Chapman, highest percent of pitches seen in strike zone in NL. Bodes well for second half.
5. SFG runners have made fewest outs at home plate, just two.
6. Most grand slams, 5, tied with Dodgers.

Something similar to Luciano's 9th inning error rate, I should imagine...

Hayden Birdsong got the win tonight, his first. Giants, 5-3, he pitched very well, 1/2 4-seam fastballs, 1/4th sliders, 10% curves, 14% change ups. Still just 22.
Giants now 1-0 vs. Atlanta starting a tough road trip after taking two of three vs. the Dodgers.

Giants took 2 of 3 from both Atlanta and LA, including a 4-2 win today. Maybe it will happen...they're in Cleveland tomorrow night, TBD starting pitcher for the Giants. That guy sure is getting a lot of work.

This will be TBD’s last start for a while. Harrison is back on Saturday and Snell will return next week. Add Webb, Hicks and Birdsong and you have a pretty good rotation (and that doesn’t include Ray and Cobb, both of whom are slated to return after the break).

I'm actually getting excited about the upcoming 2nd half of the SFG season. Lots of players returning from injury. Players in the field will be strong...Late Night LaMonte at 1B, Estrada at 2B -- coming on strong. Nick Ahmed, still great in the field, Brett Wisely very strong at SS...strong tandem there. Chapman is one of the top three 3B's in baseball, off and def. Patty B. is very strong behind home plate. Conforto is able in LF, and should improve. Ramos is a revelation in CF. Yaz/Slater is a good tandem in RF. Soler always has a very strong second half compared to the first half (and is proving it now).
The backups...even Villar is hitting .294/.278/.588/.866, Fitzgerald has strong numbers, Casali is serviceable.
And the pitching is coming back...hopefully, they can turn it around. The Giants have won seven of their last 10 against strong opponents in LA, Chi and ATL; and in those games gave up 4.2 runs per game, against a season average of 4.74 runs per game...more than 1/2 run per game better...that would take them from 25th in MLB to 11th in MLB -- and that includes a 14-run outlier game at Chicago. And we get back Snell, who has been dynamite in his rehab. We'll get back Harrison on Saturday. We'll get Ray back post-All Star Break. We'll get Cobb, I believe, at some point.
I think we could sneak into the playoffs, assuming things break the Giants way and we're done with injuries for the time being.

Now that we're at the halfway point, I checked in on Bart's performance. The Pirates have used five catchers this year, in order of # of games played with OPS:
- Yasmani Grandal (40 games, .456 third worst on team)
- Henry Davis (29, .502, sixth worst on team)
- Joey Bart (25, .804, still second best on team)
- Jason Delay (7, .733, 4th best on the team)
- Grant Koch (4, .125, worst on team.).
Fielding-wise, the three main catchers are all -1 Rtot. Bart has the best range factor and the fewest passed balls of the three, Bart also has the fewest errors -- by far. He has 1, Grandal has 6. Bart is the worst at throwing out baserunners, only 10%. Davis has thrown out 20%, Grandal has thrown out 19%. Pitch framing, Grandal is #11 of 61 catchers in MLB (Bailey is #2), Bart is #28, Davis is #32.

Last item of note: four of the top six batters for the Pirates are ex-Giants; Reynolds (#1, .805), Bart (#2, .804), Connor Joe (#T5, .725), McCutchen (#T5, .725).

Giants drop a tough one in Cleveland. Harrison struggles in his first duty in a month. Giant's leave 10 on base and go 1-13 with runners in scoring position. They certainly had their opportunities . . . .
A win tomorrow would be nice.

For the first time since 1986, a homegrown Giants outfielder has been chosen to play for the NL all-stars.

I'm a jinx. Watched the game yesterday to see Harrison's start. First start of a game I've seen all season, and only the second or third I've seen any of. Four runs in the first two, so I turned it off. They almost came back, but no. Today, forgot about the game, turned it on in the bottom the fourth when the Giants were ahead 3-0, as I wanted to see Birdsong. He promptly gives up four straight hits, and two runs. Watched Hjelle give up a bunch a week ago in extras, then again today. Baseball is a superstitious game. I gotta stop watching.

Slater is off to Cincinnati (along with a satchel of cash) for LHP Alex Young (he was with SF in 2022).
Note: The Giants optioned Young to Sacramento.

Good article. Also of note:
- Five consecutive years of 99+ OPS+
- Through 2022, better than a 90% stolen base percentage; 2021 led the NL in stolen base percentage.
- He was an excellent corner outfielder (+15 career Rtot, considerably better range factor than league average in both corners)
