Re: The weird Pat Haden appearance - Extra Point - 09-09-2014

There are some silver linings here. Recruits and parents of recruits have to be wondering what kind of program USC is running. The other members of the championship selection committee have to be wondering about Haden's decision making ability as well. And, it will likely get worse for USC. When people like Sark and Haden reveal an irrational behavior and get called on it, they don't willingly admit their mistake. They become more irrational trying to defend their position. And when they receive further criticism, they become even more resolute and irrational. This is yet another example of cognitive dissonance. In this case, there is a big discrepancy between Haden's self-image and his public image. I find this episode entertaining. Recent examples on this board, not so much.

Although at the end of the day, the CHLA has an extra $25,000 for autism research, so that's good.

Yes, and now all Haden has to do is pay the damn fine just like everyone else is required to do.

It is becoming much easier to understand why Penn State got relief from their sanctions, despite the severity of the wrongdoing, while USC got no relief from their penalties.

I believe this kind of arrogance hurt them with the NCAA, and my guess is the Pac-12 office is not thrilled with USC this week.  I would not be shocked if this week ultimately hurts USC when the CFB powers are determining the appropriate sanctions for USC's next set of violations.

There's no reason to only believe it, it's been widely reported that the arrogant stonewalling directly lead to the wildly disproportionate sanctions. If you want I can try to find a citation for you, but Ted Miller has mentioned this many times in the past few years.

Additionally, the PIR itself even includes the following statements.
"In this case, USC had a thorough rules education program." (page 3)
"The committee determined that the cooperation exhibited by the institution met its obligation under Bylaws 19.01.3.3 and 32.1.4." (page 56)

Re: The weird Pat Haden appearance - CJ90 - 09-10-2014

Apparently, based on Haden's tweet's this a.m., the Pac-12 told Haden he couldn't make out his $25K to the charity of his choosing, and that it actually had to be made out to the Pac-12.

Still exploiting the spotlight...

@ADHadenUSC: I received clarification that my PAC 12 fine must be applied to the Conf post grad scholarship fund...
@ADHadenUSC: I will also happily make the same donation to Children's Hospital LA for autism research in honor of my grandson#FightAutism

Re: The weird Pat Haden appearance - fullmetal - 09-10-2014

Petulant grandstanding...just what we need from a playoff selection committee member.  He's going to be "that guy" in the room when everyone gets together.

I am actually OK with that idea.  The next time, and we know there will be a next time, I am sure the autism research group will expect another matching gift.  So great, good for them.

And did he not know the Pac-12 rules on fines????  The USC compliance group, once praised in the LA area for its commitment to comply with the rules post-Bush, may need to implement a refresher course for the entire department ASAP.

You'd think someone associated with U$C would be intimately familiar with how fines and punishments work.

What we have here, is a "lack of institutional control."    It clearly starts at the top....or maybe the bottom :P

Excuse my cynicism, but I think Hayden and USC knew exactly how this works.  Their goal was to get people talking about Hayden and autism research and not Hayden being a total tool for coming down to harangue the officials when Sarkisian cried to him.  And you know what, it worked.

All that being said, Hayden is giving $25,000 to autism research and paying his fine.  Was he a total douche doing it?  Yes.  But hey, not worth complaining too much about the charitable aspect of this.

Of course he really had no choice but to follow through with the donation, did he?  I think he knows he looks like a jerk, just wants to be looked at as a lovable jerk.  Worked.

Re: The weird Pat Haden appearance - BostonCard - 09-10-2014

I think Hayden's salary is $3.4 million.  $25,000 is money found under the couch cushions.

Rolling Stone's take - Rally - 09-12-2014

Except for the rather gratitous slap and totally irrelevent slp at Condi, this is an interesting take.

Re: The weird Pat Haden appearance - Hurlburt88 - 09-13-2014

the article refers to Pat Haden as known for his "intelligence & integrity."  I have heard the integrity point before, particularly when he was hired to this position.  Is it real or just spin?  Any hard evidence of him making a tough call based on his integrity?  And how does this square--or not square--with his hiring of Sark?

Re: The weird Pat Haden appearance - Leftcoast - 09-13-2014

Lot's of smart, connected people rave about Haden and many went out of their way to defend him in the wake of last Saturday's incident.  This includes our own Ivan Maisel who spent a big part of a podcast saying Haden was "A very smart man who just did a very dumb thing" but went on to praise his integrity and say there is no better qualified person for the selection committee.

He may be our favorite punching bag of this week but he has some serious cred in the CFB community.

He still was a braying ass on Saturday.
