The Patriots are also a bit of a patchwork team.  But they have a running game.

You like Dierdorf? I don't really pay much attention to announcing crews, but his repeated insistence that the punter should've gone down at the 3 instead of taking the safety made me hate him forever. That someone doesn't just KNOW that 1st and goal from the 3 is more than 2 expected points means they're an idiot.

Well, now I am sad.  Poor Colts.

The NFL experts have noted that the Colts were literally a one receiver team and that guy would be a #2 at best on most teams.  Then when he got hurt it was realistically all over.  The Colts played a pretty good game, but they are still not quite a championship level team.

Luck has done a great job, and he goes into another offseason reasonably healthy.  I suspect the Colts will be able to take another step or two next year.

It's just he's been around forever. He's been an avuncular presence in my living rooms for such a long time that I'm going to miss him.

Re: NFL Playoff Thread - BostonCard - 01-11-2014

The Colts, who had 14 turnovers all season (and Luck had something like 7 interceptions) had 7, including 6 interceptions, in the playoffs.  I wonder if Luck was trying to quintessentially "do too much".

It's hard to tell, with all the injuries -- no Dwayne Allen, Reggie Wayne, etc. -- but the Colts look like they need a major talent infusion to me. It's a minor miracle that Luck's been able to carry them this far.

I think Luck could make it work better if he had time to pass and if there were actually a run threat. They need OL and they need it bad.

What the Colts need is a new GM.  That fool gifted the Browns a first round pick.  He made the team better this year but totally overpaid for only better than mediocre talent.  He better trade for Toby, and I hope they can get Moose for next to nothing.

This was a bad matchup for the Colts.  The Patriots have a better running game this year, and as you can see the My Little Ponies have a terrible run defense.

Did he make the team better? It's hard for me to believe allocating Trent Richardson 157 carries at 2.7 yards per pop is above replacement level. (Especially since Donald Brown is chugging along at, oh, 5.3 yards per carry.) Terrible coaching and general managing -- failure up and down the org chart.

Admittedly, it wasn't discussed properly and Dierdorf's preference was not the best.  The punter had a few options.
Option #1, run out of the pocket and throw the ball as far as possible, but ultimately out of bounds.  That, I suspect would put the ball at the line of scrimmage.  It is hard to believe a punter could throw it long enough and accurately enough to make that work.
Option #2 - Take a knee at the 3 and see if the D could hold the Colts to a FG.  That would have been an easy 3 points, with a chance at 7.
Option #3 - Do something to get a safety.  Kick ball out of the back of the endzone, run to the endzone and take a knee.  That planned effort would have allowed 2 points, and given the Colts the ball pretty much where a properly executed punt would have landed.

I think Option #3 was best, but that is not really what the punter tried to do.  The punter tried to do something like #1 even though he had 2 Colts draped over him.  Given that he was about to be tackled in the pocket near the goalline it was foolish to try to shove the ball to a teammate.  He was very lucky that the Colts ultimately pushed the ball out of the endzone.  In the end he got the best result for the Patriots even though he was trying to do something different.

It was a dumb luck play really.

Oh, absolutely, I'm not saying that the punter did the right thing there, I'm saying that the announcer's analysis of the punter's options was so terrible that they shouldn't be allowed to talk about football ever again.
