Did you see where we put a man on the moon?

You don't get out much, do you ...

Texas counts as 3 (especially when it comes to splitting up the revenues).

They only count bowl-eligible teams.

Re: BCS possibilities - ahuang06 - 11-14-2012

Because I have too much time on my hands - is there an off-chance we end up in the Sugar Bowl?
Here's my logic:
- 6 conference winners: Teams that are likely to get in one way or another: University of South Bend, a second SEC team (for sake of argument - Georgia), a second Big-12 team (Oklahoma or Texas if at least one of them stays in top 14) leaving 1 BCS spot. If Rose Bowl takes University of South Bend and Fiesta Bowl takes the second Big-12 team and the second SEC Team, Sugar Bowl gets last pick for an at-large.

Of the top 14: top 4 teams are in, second SEC team is in, four out-of-luck SEC teams (max of 2 teams/conference), ACC champ (already in), Big10 champ (already in), second Big-12 team (already in), and 2 remaining top 14 teams.

Of those two remaining spots - if Clemson wins out (tough matchup against South Carolina remaining) - they probably get that Sugar Bowl spot. Stanford's in that last top 14 spot right now, and of the teams below us: Texas isn't eligible (3rd big12 team), a slew of Pac-12 teams (Oregon State, UCLA, USC), Louisville (already in), then a few possibly eligible teams (Louisiana Tech, Michigan, Rutgers), then rounding out the top 25 are two more ineligible teams (Texas Tech, OK State), and then Washington.

Obviously, lots of football to play, lots of things could happen. But, if we stay ahead of those Pac-12 teams and Clemson goes down to the other USC - could we be going to the Big Easy? Did I miss something obvious?

Re: BCS possibilities - ahuang06 - 11-14-2012

I guess the problem is assuming we drop a game and Clemson also drops a game, no reason to think that they wouldn't stay ahead of us in the rankings...

Re: BCS possibilities - 3card - 11-14-2012

Don't write off your analysis, we are extremely close to Clemson in bcs points so it really could come down to how the games play out, the style points.  I like this line of thinking. If the SEC keeps 6 teams in the top 14, only 2 can be in the bcs, so we could be a forced entry even at 14. I guess the folks who concocted the bcs rules underestimated the sec's ability to manipulate the rankings and stack so many teams in the top.

Re: BCS possibilities - cardcoug - 11-15-2012

Two more things to reinforce the point. When the losses happen could matter in the human polls (clemson would close out with a loss, while we would redeem ourselves against a ranked team on the road). If UCLA wins this week i wouldn't be surprised to see us end up ahead of clemson in the human polls. But even if UCLA loses and clemson keeps it close with south carolina, they will still finish off with a fall, so probably pretty close to us.
And, second, we won't even need to be ahead of them in the human polls, just within a spot or two. We're currently 4 spots down from them in both human polls, but far enough ahead in the computers to be very, very close in overall standings. Both of our remaining games would be better than theirs by quite a bit, so our advantage in the comps would get even bigger.

I really wish FSU hadn't pulled off that ridiculous comeback last Thursday....

Re: BCS possibilities - 3card - 11-15-2012

One team to watch for this weekend is LA Tech.  They could play the BCS spoiler for us in two ways: by taking the final Top 14 spot or by finishing in the Top 16 and ahead of the Big East Champion (which auto-qualifies them for the 4th and final at-large spot).  They have two tough games remaining (they're slight underdogs in both) -- Utah State and SJSU, which is great if they lose but will boost their dismal computer rankings if they win out.

As to the Big East -- Rutgers is a slight underdog this week @ Cincy.  Louisville will likely be an underdog at Rutgers in two weeks.  So, the odds are in favor of a very low-ranked BE champ.  Go Utah State!
