I'm pretty sure the 15th-and-better cut isn't until after play on Sunday.

That’s correct, but we really want a morning tee time for Sunday as scores get worse in the afternoon due to higher winds and dried out greens. The top 15 at the end of today get to play in the morning tomorrow, so although there isn’t a cut today, we want to maximize our chances to score well tomorrow.
Also, I would go back to Gao Over Stearns for tomorrow. Experience matters.

Stanford should take some confidence that they can go low on this course. They have the most birdies of any team in the field (tied with #1 ranked Auburn). But they have been dragged down by the same problem that has plagued them the last several seasons - big numbers. They have recorded 9 doubles or worse including an 8, a 9 and a 10. We can be sure that the team and coaches have talked a lot about that this afternoon, how to reduce those big numbers. They also have to figure out a way to play the 14th hole.
The team is assured of playing in the morning tomorrow which is critical, as bbm223 notes. It is really tough for afternoon teams to make the top 15 cut.

Stanford solved some of the trouble holes today. They got through 14 and 17 mostly unscathed. And Dean Greyserman continued his strong play. He posted a bogey free round after going bogey-free yesterday too (though he did have a double). Greyserman is on the cusp of top 10 individually.
Stanford posted a team score of +1 and finished T11 with the afternoon teams still on the course. The good news - they are guaranteed to finish top 15 and make the cut to play tomorrow. They also are only 3 shots out of 8th place so they will be within reach of making match play with a strong 4th round. And we will get to watch live action on TV with Golf Channel coverage on Monday.
Even so, Stanford has yet to put it all together across the team. They have had to count scores of 76, 78 and 76 in the first 3 rounds. It looks like it could be 6, 7 or even 8 teams in a scramble for the last match play spots. Come on, Card! Let's go!!

After the morning wave the guys are sitting in a tie for 11th. Top 15 make the cut. A couple teams playing this afternoon are going to need to shoot under par, which is no gimme. If that happens, we would be looking at a three (or more) team playoff. No idea how that works.

Practically, only Texas A&M, Georgia and Florida have a chance to move into the top 15 from the afternoon. Even if 2 of 3 do so, Stanford still makes the cut.
If there is a tie, it is broken by adding up the drop scores. Stanford unlikely to do well in a tie-breaker having dropped scores of 82, 81 and 77.

Watch out for LSU. -11 so far on the back 9 as their first 9 holes today. But still some 7 strokes back of Stanford in 16th.

LSU was so far back, I did not even notice them. But they have played the best round of the tournament and vaulted 15 spots in the standings. Looks like they will knock out Pepperdine from playing tomorrow. Stanford's position in the top 15 though looks secure.

Nineteen under so far today alone. The best other team score today was minus seven. . ..

Now it’s all about Mississippi State. If they can go -6 in their last three holes (7-9), they will deserve it.

I don’t think Mississippi state can mathematically make it with a hole to play for two players, so we should be above the cut line. We will need to make up three strokes tomorrow.

Make up enough strokes to pass 7 other teams.

Technically, Stanford only needs to pass 4 other teams. Florida and Virginia, both one stroke ahead, Oklahoma, two ahead, and Duke three ahead. Of course they can't let themselves get passed by anybody else.

With 9 holes to play, Stanford has moved up to 10th place, 4 shots out of 8th. Stanford is -3 on the day. Teams have fallen back (Duke, Oklahoma, and surprisingly, Virginia) to help Stanford move up. LSU surged out of the gate, then fell back. But 2 teams have pulled away for the 7th and 8th spots so far - Florida and Tennessee. Stanford would need a few more birdies and hope that one of those schools hits a speed bump. But there is a chance!
Golf Channel live coverage begins at 2:30.

2, 3, 4 and 5 holes remaining for the Cardinal and it's North Carolina, Tennessee and Stanford fighting for the final spot.
UNC -3
Tennessee -1
Stanford -1
Just for information, any ties for the 8th spot will be played off. All 5 players play the same hole, cumulative score.

Stanford is on the last hole, tied for 9th with Tennessee, two strokes back from UNC. We kind of need them to collapse down the stretch on their last three holes.

I just checked and it shows Stanford in a three-way tie for 8th at -2 with Tennessee and Arizona!
UCLA in a free-fall is at -3
Pulled up the broadcast in time to see Dean Greyserman hit a ball out of bounds on 18. Nuts!
Greyserman recovers for par on 18. Stanford in the clubhouse at -2, tied for 8th with Tennesse (Arizona slipped to -1).
Tennessee in the clubhouse with Stanford at -2, currently 8th place. UCLA and UNC tied for 6th at -3.

Regardless of the final result, this has been a terrific day and impressive tournament for Stanford. The Cardinal could not make match play with recent teams that included Michael Thorbjornsen, Karl Vilips and Barclay Brown (for a couple of years, the team had all 3). This year's squad does not have the same kind of star power. Greyserman entered this season with only 9 competitive collegiate rounds. Cui is a frosh. Wang is a transfer from Cal. Gao is a junior who is like a career sub coming off the bench. Leng is the only remaining player from last year's #1 ranked recruiting class. It's been truly a team effort. A great credit to hard work by each of the players. Kudos to them and Coach Ray.

+100 Spiny Norman.
UNC started on the back nine and their top player just had all kind of trouble with the green-side bunker at the par 3 8th hole. With the bogey, UNC falls to -2 through 15-18. Stanford and Tennesse now in a three-way tie for 7th! UCLA still at -3 through 15-18. Arizona in contention at -1 through 15-18.
And UCLA falls to -2. We have a five-way tie for 6th place!
UCLA has two players still on the course, one with the 17th and 18th holes to finish and the other with just the 18th hole.
Arizona back at -2, has four players on the course, two with the 17th and 18th, the others with the 18th.
UNC has three players on the course, one with the 8th and 9th holes, the other with the 9th.

Arizona now at -3 and still on the course. UNC in the clubhouse tied with Stanford and Tennessee at -2. UCLA at -2 and still on the course.
UCLA in the clubhouse at -2.
Arizona in the clubhouse at -3. So we have four teams tied at 7th place. Do they play the playoff today? I have dinner plans, so I would appreciate if they would wait until tomorrow morning.
