RE: Stanford Softball - d4cohn - 04-29-2022

Stanford loses the first of a critical three game set in Seattle against Washington 5-0. Offense and pitching
were both not great tonight. We squandered opportunities to score runs with runners on base (albeit
against a very experienced and accomplished pitcher); Alana also didn't quite have her best
tonight, giving up 2 HR to Madison Huskey.

I think we have a favorable matchup tomorrow against the UW #2 (unless Washington plans
on pitching Gabbie Plain all three games).

RE: Stanford Softball - d4cohn - 04-30-2022

Stanford loses the second game, and therefore, the series to the Huskies in Washington 2-0. Stanford pitched
well enough to win, as Tatum Boyd and Reagan Krause really did a fine job in the circle. However,
the offensive performance against 2 Husky pitchers with 3+ ERAs was frankly not good enough today. We advanced
runners well enough, but ultimately, you have to score the runners when you advance them to scoring position,
and we repeatedly failed to do that.

Husky Stadium is a tough place to play, but hopefully, we can salvage a game tomorrow to stay in the hunt
for a .500 or better Pac record.

RE: Stanford Softball - d4cohn - 05-01-2022

Stanford unfortunately gets swept by the Huskies in by far the most important series of the season
re postseason implications. Cardinal will unfortunately have a lot of work to do to get back the
regional host conversation (a series win at home against the Ducks will be a minimum, and they
probably need a sweep, given a potentially tough road test at Arizona, even though the Wildcats
are toward the bottom of the Pac this year).

RE: Stanford Softball - d4cohn - 05-06-2022

Stanford picks up a very good win with an impressive performance against the Oregon Ducks. Alana Vawter shut down a potent Duck
offense that can score runs in bunches in the 3-0 shutout win. Stanford now 34-16, and 9-10 in Pac play.

RE: Stanford Softball - BostonCard - 05-06-2022

Thanks for the updates! Keep them coming.

We are under .500, but in fourth place.  ASU, UCLA, and UW are a combined 44-13 in conference.

Yes, unfortunately after today's loss 9-11 in Pac play. Have to win tomorrow to have any chance (probably very remote at this point) of hosting a regional (since now we would have to win a series against UA in Tucson). But a .500 record in Pac would at least hopefully give us a high #2 regional seed (there is a big difference between have to go to Oklahoma's regional and say going to Austin to play the Longhorns.)

Also, Cal and Utah (albeit with tough road series next week at UCLA and Oregon State respectively) are only a game back of us in fourth, so we have to keep winning to finish off what would be a very good Pac result.

RE: Stanford Softball - BobK - 05-07-2022

Let’s hope not Norman. Hope we can win at least 3 of the last 4 Need hits

RE: Stanford Softball - BobK - 05-08-2022

Didn’t get hits today and lost 3-0. Three games left before NCAA at Arizona. Stanford remains in 4th place however

Disappointing performance on offense today. Alana definitely pitched well enough to win. Have to score runs and get hits against
a pitcher with a 3+ ERA. The margin between 4th place and last in the conference is amazingly very small right now.

Have to get at least one in Tucson (which has been the toughest park to play in Pac by far), or a very strong start to Pac play
could end in a disappointing finish.

Also, today's home series loss effectively ended our top 16 chances. We should be in the tourney (barring disaster with the RPI rankings),
but a #2 regional seed is not guaranteed if we get blown out in Tucson.

RE: Stanford Softball - BobK - 05-12-2022

I never would have guessed if Stanford scored 6 we would lose to Arizona but they did 10-6. Two more games must win for a regional 2 seed my thought

RE: Stanford Softball - BobK - 05-13-2022

Top of the 5th. Stanford up 7-0

Mercy Mercy Mercy. Stanford wins 10-0 in 5. Krause with the shutout

What an unbelievable result. Congrats to the coaches and players on this historic win (1st win in Tucson at Hillenbrand in 10 years).
Cardinal can definitively clinch a fourth place Pac finish, a series win in the regular season finale and as Bob indicated, a likely number 2 regional seed. Lose, and things get really messy re Pac finish and regional seed status.

RE: Stanford Softball - BobK - 05-14-2022

Stanford wins again. 4-3. First ever winning series in Tucson

Stanford finished in 4th place 11-13 record one game ahead of Oregon and 36-19 overall

What a fantastic result to win this series, more than make up for the home series loss to the Ducks,
and finish the regular season through the last game to secure the 4th place finish. Hopefully,
when the committee analyzes our resume, they see a resume better than #32 in the field (i.e. assignment
to Oklahoma's regional). When we play our best softball, with series wins against ASU, UCLA etc., we can contend
with just about anyone.

I don't follow the game outside of Stanford and a little viewing of other Pac XII games.  It seems like the difference between 4 and say the top 3 isn't a big leap, but I have no idea what it might take for Stanford to move up next year.  Is it better pitching, more hitting or what?  Vaughter didn't seem she had her best stuff but we left her in when bases were loaded and AZ only 3 behind.  I think she gave up something like 13 hits, maybe when considering the weather, that is what you are going to get. Thoughts from people who really understand the sport would be appreciated.

Great question GK. I think we need two main things: 1) we need bats, or for our lineup to keep developing and take the next step offensively. 2) We need another starter, particularly a pitcher that can complement Reagan Krause (and I think we will get this next year with a highly touted pitcher coming in from I think Kansas).

However, according to Massey, our defensive ranking (which combines all of our pitching and defense, basically run prevention) is #5 in the nation (i.e. national championship level). IMO, Alana Vawter is a national championship level pitcher (see her stats, awards etc.), and the defense behind her is national championship level.

The biggest thing is we have to take major steps forward on offense (mostly batting average but also improve our power hitting too). Our Massey rating on offense (run scoring essentially) is #65 (i.e. not even NCAA tourney level).

Perhaps Massey overrates our pitching and defense slightly, and underrates our offense slightly. However, improving on the clear gap between our hitting and our pitching/defense is imperative to catch ASU and UCLA (I think UW will take a step back because they are losing their ace Gabbie Plain to graduation).

Finally, this doesn't have to do with roster development, but I think we will need to schedule well and strategically next year in the non-conference, so our RPI can be closer to the top 16 so we have a chance to host a regional or maybe even a super. Home field advantage is really important in postseason with the growth of the game (i.e. the regionals attract big crowds that provide a brobdingnagian advantage to the host).

RE: Stanford Softball - BobK - 05-15-2022

Our best recruiting Class in years. I'm missig one here:

Allison Morikawa C-OF. Great arm, 600 On Base %. Hits with power. Ranked # 61

Nijia Canady P./Hitter   0.26 ERA, hit 478 with 13 HRs.  In Basketball, 20 PPG and 12 rebounds Per Game.
Ranked # 11

River Mahler, SS In limited play due to Covid cancelled season in 10 Games hit 714.   In a tie also ranked # 11

Kyra Chan, OF, Ranked # 29 Torrey Pines HS Great speed hit over 500 in Travel Ball

Plus a top recruit at Stanford a Frosh hurt all year or out for other reasons.

The rest of the story, adding Jones

Offense and power as DCohn says. Plus given who was honored on Sr Day we will have some now Srs back for their Covid year. Thus we lose no starters

Wonder what we do with Canady when she isn't pitching.  Obviously a fine athlete and if she can hit anywhere near high school level she will need to be playing.

RE: Stanford Softball - BobK - 05-15-2022

Canady maybe DP. But do we sacrifice defense for offense? Will be interesting to see.

RE: Stanford Softball - d4cohn - 05-15-2022

Stanford avoids Oklahoma, but gets a stiff regional test being sent to Tuscaloosa as the #2 regional seed there.
Favorable 2-3 matchup with Murray State (as compared to South Dakota State last year), but winning a regional
at Alabama will be tough.

With our RPI, and our kind of up-and-down Pac play (big series wins over ASU, UCLA and on road at UA),
but then letdowns against Cal especially but also at home to Oregon, probably means this is fair
and about as good as we could expect (will have to see final 8 regionals before I can say definitively).

Arizona with a favorable regional assignment, getting Illinois and Missouri in Columbia, MO. Comparatively, we should have been sent here over either of these teams (Illinois or Arizona).
