Stanford wins, 12-3. A complete game by Williams (109 pitches).
Let's get another win tonight!
BTW, I still don't like the NCAA's system for assigning home and away teams in the regionals.
In today's game, #4 Sac St. was the home team and #1 Stanford was away. So, #4 Sac St. now has been the home team in two of its three games, while #1 Stanford has been the home team in just one of its three games.
That seems wrong to me. In my view, the higher seeds should get the home team advantage in every game because they have earned it by virtue of their performance throughout the regular season.

Fresno State has throw out their two aces so far.
They're a combined 22-2.
The rest of their staff is 18-12-1.
I assume they're going with the sophomore Mitchell,
who's 3-4 this season.
allowing a .296 batting average,
compared to their two aces' .235.
They have a couple solid relievers
and have put Mitchell on a short leash,
so we could see their middle relievers early.
Go Cardinal!
Kid gets a lot of strikeouts,
nice walk to strike out ratio.

I agree. Higher seed = home team. Always.

Board finally hooked me in after lurking for over a year. Hoping to see a good performance tonight, and I know they are more than capable of winning two in a row against Fresno. But yesterday sure felt like the same show we've seen the last two postseasons.
Go Card!

This is when we end the “F. State” allergy.

Half the crowd but twice the energy on Stanford's side compared to yesterday. Nice 1-2-3 inning to start by Miller.

That was
almost a lead-off HR. So close.

Will the Thrill with ground rule double scores Big Bad Wulff who just prior to this picked up second on an aggressive run following a pitch in the dirt.
(Any inside scoop on the meaning of the shaka flashed by Will after the double? Don’t know of any Hawaii connections for him.)

Aggressive base-running had been paying off today until that close play at the plate. Up 4-0 with Miller looking great, but can't take the foot off the gas at the plate.

At this point, I’m resigned to the fact that we’re going to make at least one out on the basepaths each game. That one was especially painful though. Let them off the hook in a major way there.
It was a poor decision by Kinamon to try to steal home given the situation but he was safe and the umps blew the call. Now they just blew another as a Stowers catch is ruled a trap and the next FSU batter hits a 3R HR to tie the game at 4-4. Incredibly frustrating. This game shouldn’t even be close.

2 bad calls go against us and now it's a tie game...

Damn, another base running mistake. We got 1 run in the 4th, but would have had runners on 1st and 3rd if Duke would not have tried to stretch a single into a double. Tawa was the next batter.

They have been playing like the better team today (as opposed to yesterday), but breaks and base-running blunders are what has made this a one-run game to this point.

We are having a brobdingnagian inning right now. It's now 8-4 in the bottom of the 5th.

Margin now up to 4. Fresno State leaving the pitcher in (a starter in their rotation) to seemingly eat innings makes it seem as if
they are trying to preserve whatever rotation/bullpen depth they can for a potential if necessary game.
An unbelievable stat: Hill (the starter turned reliever tonight for Fresno) has thrown an incredible 65 pitches in only 1 1/3 innings.

Hill just got ejected for arguing calls.

Well, so much for the eat innings plan. :) Lol. That just cannot happen in a game of this significance.
Question for the more knowledgable than me on the board: Miller is probably just about approaching a pitch limit
soon. Who all do we have available at this point (starters versus relievers) for the rest of this regional?

Is Hill really a starter? Checking Fresno’s stats, it looks like he has 18 appearances and 4 starts. The way Fresno has handled its pitching this entire game has been odd to say the least. Thought they might just be saving guys for tomorrow after we jumped out to an early lead but that theory didn’t make a lot of sense once they tied the score at 4-4. Makes me think they might just not have a lot of quality arms in the pen but not sure.
This is so ugly. Sloppiest performance of the season in the biggest game.

Sorry. I had thought Hill had the 14 starts, rather than Mitchell (who got the start tonight). My bad. However, Hill does have the fourth most starts on team, so using him in long relief removes the possibility of using him in an if necessary game. However, at this point, we have to get through this inning and game first.

This game is torture. It's 3 hours in and still only the bottom of the 6th! Terrible baseball all around by both teams.
