RE: NCAA Women's Golf - d4cohn - 05-21-2018

Andrea Lee is absolutely on fire to start the final round. Four under already through her first six holes. Card in prime position to qualify for match play round.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Hulk01 - 05-21-2018

Actual current average scores per full team (drop score included)
Front nine: +11.05
Back nine:  +8.15

And the teams are bringing that back nine average down today.  Meanwhile, Arizona almost single-handedly has kept te front nine side much higher.

Now we'd love to shoot for a top five finish.  That would keep us from having to face Alabama or UCLA in our first match.  And Northwestern isn't the ideal match up either, because they have the experience of playing in the final last year.

Barring something catastrophic among the first six, the battle looks like Kent State, Baylor, and Arizona battling for the final two spots.  Baylor has to move to the front, Arizona to the back, so I'll go with Arizona but they're not easy to bet on playing this badly.

I'll feel good if Kent State makes.  That means I got six of the final eight right: Alabama, UCLA, Northwestern, Duke, Stanford, and Kent State.  I had Texas and Arkansas in, but not USC or Baylor.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Langdude - 05-21-2018

Just saw Andrea Lee make a long putt from the skirt. Not sure about distance, but it looked to be approximately a million feet.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BostonCard - 05-21-2018

Pretty much done with the back nine and so far we are at -3 for the day, second only to SC's -4.  Andrea Lee is blistering today; playing the back nine at 5 under!

We are now 8 strokes clear of #9 Baylor, so in a pretty good place to make it to match play, which is quite the turnaround from the first half-dozen holes of the tournament.  But there are still 9 holes of golf to play and Arizona played the front 9 at +14.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2018

Liu wobbling a bit on the front. Fatigue may be a factor if she is still recovering from being sick. But her teammates have been solid. Lee posts another birdie and is only 2 back in the individual race. Aubert makes a birdie as well. Man, stay away from the scrum for the 8th spot. It’s a mess.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Hulk01 - 05-21-2018

If Duke doesn't make it, it can blame a lousy finish.  Eight over for the last three. and a plus one on the easy 18th.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BostonCard - 05-21-2018

You know who really screwed the pooch today?  Arizona: +20 when the next highest score is +9 (Alabama, interestingly enough).  They went from 3rd place to a tie for 10th, 3 holes back of #8 Baylor.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2018

Andrea Lee makes birdie on her final hole and ties the course record with a final round 65! Shannon Aubert also under par today with a fantastic 71. The team really struggled on holes 5 and 6. Hulk has emphasized their difficulty. Stanford was +6 on those 2 holes and that does not count Emily Wang's quintuple bogey 9 on #6. But the team was -3 on the other 16 holes and has locked up the #5 slot in match play. They will play Northwestern tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

Stay tuned for the head to head matchups which are determined by coach's picks later this evening. It is NOT necessarily #1 player vs #1 player, #2 player vs #2 player, etc. Northwestern as the higher seeded team will get to decide if they want to pick first or defer to Stanford and make Coach Walker put out the first player.

I didn't get to watch the end of the round today, but I see she wound up tied for 2nd overall.  That's great.
I remember one putt that seemed to hang on the lip (from the angle shown on the broadcast).  And another "almost".

The broadcast seemed to be a special on Alabama's Cheyenne Knight.  I saw a bit of her fall before I had to turn off the golf.

The scoreboard I'm looking at shows Arizona as tied for 8th with "ties will be resolved".  It shows them as +17 today, with Alabama as +11.

3 and maybe 4 PAC-12 teams will be in the match play.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2018

Stanford will be playing a very experienced team in Northwestern.  They were the #1 team for much of last season and lost to ASU in the national finals. 4 of their 5 players return from that team.

Stanford counters with a solid core of Lee, Valenzuela and Aubert who return from last year's team that lost to ASU in the semis. Aubert in fact is perhaps the most experienced NCAA match play contestant of all time. She has played in match play all 4 years at Stanford.

Liu and Wang did not compete in the NCAAs last year. Wang did get match play experience at the East Lake Cup in the fall vs ASU and U.SC. Northwestern also was at that event, but Stanford did not play them.

One other note - Andrea Lee finished T2 in the individual race, the highest finish EVER for a Stanford golfer.

MT, Arizona got an EAGLE from their final player to tie Baylor. They are playing off right now for the 8th spot which will oppose UCLA tomorrow. Light is fading. If this goes much longer, they may run out of daylight. That would be a problem because the quarterfinal matches are supposed to start at 7 am central.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - BigEasyCard - 05-21-2018

Per the Twitter feeds of both Arizona and Baylor, the first playoff round (one hole each by five players, best four count) ended in a tie.  Moving on to a second one in fast fading light.

Geaux Cardinal!

Bears fall to Arizona in the playoff.

Tough way for the season to end, but the 9th place finish at the #NCAAGolf Championship is the Bears’ 3rd top-10 in the last four years. Thanks for following. We’ll be back.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Canalejas - 05-21-2018

With UCLA tied for 1st with Alabama, how did they decide which team gets to match against Arizona tomorrow?

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2018

Now we know - Arizona vs. UCLA in the other half of the Stanford-Northwestern bracket.

Our attention turns to the press room and the announcement of the match ups. This video shows you exactly how it works. Believe me, there is a lot of strategy involved. Coach Walker must have been thinking about how she would approach this all year. Now the moment has arrived for her to decide.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8k-Kp-WCbA

With Liu and Wang not reliable this week, the path to winning has to rest heavily on the veterans - Lee, Valenzuela, Aubert.  Coach Walker's approach in the past has been based more on placement among the 5 matches rather than trying to make a decision based on the specific opponent.  If form holds, she will send Aubert or Valenzuela out first, hoping they can get a point on the board in the 1st match. She will save Lee for the 4th or 5th match. But does she put Aubert or Valenzuela in the 2nd match hoping for a fast start? In the 4th match to serve as a backstop if Stanford is down 2-1? We'll find out soon.

They added up the 5th (unused) scores each day. UCLA had a lower cumulative drop score than Alabama.

Why didn't they do this with Baylor and Arizona?  Or were they still tied after counting their cumulative drop scores?

With elimination for one team riding on the outcome, ties for 8th place are broken on the golf course.  Each team sends all 5 players on the course to play the same holes. Low 4 of 5 scores count. Arizona and Baylor were tied after the 1st playoff hole. Arizona was -2 and Baylor was +1 after the 2nd playoff hole.  Stanford lost the national championship to Oklahoma State in a playoff in 1995 (Tiger's frosh year), though the playoff format was different.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Canalejas - 05-21-2018

Thanks, Spiny!  Would they have broken the tie on the golf course if there were teams tied for 15th yesterday after 3 rounds?

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2018

Matchups are now posted.  First tee time for Stanford is 7:50 am central.  I believe these matches will start on #10.

1 - Cho (Northwestern) vs. Wang (Stanford)
2 - Riley (Northwestern) vs. Aubert (Stanford)
3 - Kim (Northwestern) vs. Liu (Stanford)
4 - Lau (Northwestern) vs. Valenzuela (Stanford)
5 - Mao (Northwestern) vs. Lee (Stanford)

Classwise, the matchups are:
1 - senior vs. soph
2 - soph vs. senior
3 - senior vs. frosh
4 - junior vs. soph
5 - junior vs. soph

You can follow the score tracker here - http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=match&tid=15141

The Golf Channel will have live coverage starting at 8 am pacific.

May the better team win. And I sure hope that it is Stanford!

Canalejas, there actually *was* a tie for 15th yesterday. 4 teams tied for 1 spot. And they broke the tie using scorecards - the lowest cumulative drop scores for the three rounds.

From the NCAA manual:
Quote:Ties
For the Division I women's golf championships, ties for the top 15 teams as well as the top 9 individuals will  be  broken  by  use  of  the  established  non-sudden death  tie-breaking  procedures.    However,  ties  to determine the top eight teams and NCAA individual champion will be broken by a sudden-death playoff or, if necessary, by the established non-sudden-death tie-breaking procedures.

Arizona saved themselves with two birdies and an eagle on #18 (though one of the birdies was discarded).  That took them from +20 to +17, and the playoff with Baylor.  Considering they started the day tied for third and with about a dozen holes to the cut line, they almost had an incredible collapse.  But good for them to save themselves on the last hole.

Wow.  Wouldn’t want to play anybody named Mao.

RE: NCAA Women's Golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2018

Weather forecast for tomorrow - starting in the 60s rising to the high 80s or low 90s in the afternoon. Light winds. No rain.

It will be a long, hot, very tiring day for the teams that advance to the semifinals in the afternoon. But I remember how our high school coach prepared us for the state tournament. We got up to practice before class, even in February and March in Oklahoma. He had us running cross country in the off season to build up stamina, knowing that the first day of state would be 36 holes. He had us practice putting at the end of the day when everyone was tired because that was how you would feel at the end of a day of competition. It was a test to maintain your concentration and your fundamentals (just like free throw shooting at the end of the game).  Coach's approach worked. We won state my senior year by 24 shots.

Tomorrow will be a test of Stanford's year long preparation. I think that Coaches Walker and Dobashi are fantastic at getting the players into the right frame of mind to be successful. But every team is different. We'll see how it goes this time!
