Also, I will confess to yelling "sideout" quite often when the opposing server is preparing to serve [often using my hands as a sort of "megaphone]. Do you consider that to be bad form/poor sportsmanship? What about the Band yelling "bounce, bounce, bounce..."?Â
I don't know whether silence or noise is better for our servers (I would guess you are right, steady noise is best), but either way, crowd noise is part of the game so they'd better be used to it. Fan/crowd noise is fine and makes the game more fun, it's
illegally amplified noise from a
position on the court that I object to. The rule that a poster quoted above says that in ordinary games the cheerleaders have to switch sides with their teams; it's only in NCAA championships that they stay on the same side and so the NCAA felt they had to put in special rules against disruption because of their special proximity to the players. The band is sitting or standing in seats so they can
say/yell all they want, but their instruments are essentially specially amplified so they can't
play so as to disrupt the players. I.e., I'm with Terry above.

As for sportsmanship, 76, that is terrible that you yell as the opponent is serving. I'm surprised you haven't been kicked out by the officials. And speaking of that, I liked it MUCH better when you sat behind the Stanford bench in the Glory Days of Montgomery Hoops and gave the refs an earful. THAT's what we need to see more of at Maples. Unfortunately, few people actually sit in those seats on game day, and the ones that do show no imagination whatsoever.
I'm up for a little Curtain of Doom action, if you'll join me ;D. After all, that's where Red Vest used to sit when WIWIB. However, I'm pretty sure one of the red coats now would shoo us away...

Question for you, 76 and OldAlum. Imagine a reasonably competitive basketball game of 7th and 8th graders. Not AAU, but not gym class either. One team is down by one point, two seconds left in the game. Gym is silent. The team that is behind has two free throws to tie, win or lose the game. As the shooter goes into his motion, a parent from the other team yells "Miss!"
Poor sportsmanship, or just getting an advantage over the other team?
Absolutely poor sportsmanship at that age. In California's excellent state-wide youth competitive basketball league (National Junior Basketball, or NJB, grades 3-8, in the middle between recreational league and AAU), any criticism or heckling or disruption of either team by fans, parents, coaches, or players is prohibited; only positive cheering is allowed. To help instill this often-foreign habit, in the second game of the season there is no fan verbal comments/cheering allowed at all, only clapping. There is also an adult gym monitor to enforce this.
In college, with a noisy gym, fan noise is part of the game and yelling to encourage your team and discourage the other team is fine.

I agree 100%, although I might cut a little more slack for HS basketball [assuming no obscenities, derogatory remarks, and the like, and giving extra points for humorous/clever ribbing], although I think the same general rules apply for HS basketball, at least in the Bay Area.
Also, upon further review, to the extent the concerns expressed in this thread have tended to focus on the cheerleaders, with their on-the-floor maxi-megaphones, rather than the UT Band in the stands with their mini-phones, I am inclined to agree that those on the floor were probably beyond the pail [sic] -- although I still assume some NCAA person must have given them an okay, since they weren't exactly unobtrusive. And again, very proud of our players for powering through. Go Card!
Now, I have to get back to heckling Teejers... ;)

Yeah. I want the names of those remiss NCAA officials, where they were born, where they went to school (UT?), the whole scoop, so we can hold them accountable!! NJB gym monitors do a better job than them!

Apparently we set a program record with 5 first or second teamers:

That kind of surprises me given all the great teams we've had over the years and that this team isn't a #1. Perhaps it's a sign that our team has more balance than past #1 teams that had 2-3 dominant players carrying more load?

We are t # 1Â Â Lets see this week
Re: WVB - on to the Sweet 16 -

I think our team isn't #1 ranked or seeded mostly because of 2 early losses to Penn State. At least one of those was with Lutz out injured and positions shuffled to compensate. (There was also one conference loss to Washington.) I like our team's chances to win it all this week.

I can't say I'm familiar enough with the other teams to make an educated analysis, but the team I watched last weekend looks like it has everything it needs to win the championship.

Women's Volleyball against Florida just underway in Kansas City. Winner gets Nebraska in the National Championship Game, who upset #1 Penn State in 5 sets.

Stanford struggling mightily in the early going with hitting errors. Card hitting a poor .053 to fall behind 12-8 in the first set.

Cardinal have recovered a bit, but not a pretty offensive showing from either squad so far. Stanford cut the deficit to 19-17 to force a Florida timeout.

Stanford drops first set 25-22. Struggling tonight with the height of Florida's blockers.

Serving hasn't look too sharp, either. FLA clearly better team through 1+ sets.
