Wait a minute! Juarez has really calmed down in the last 5-6 years, although I'm not sure why. Maybe the cartel has killed everyone that needed killing but you don't hear anything like that these days. El Paso, meanwhile, is one of the safest cities in the country and has arguably the best Mexican food north of Mexico City. The surrounding Franklin Mountains are worth a visit and I have nothing but good memories from my trips there to visit one of my Stanford roommates. And, as mentioned, folks there really go out of their way for the Sun Bowl. Plus, the stadium itself is an attraction in itself, right in a natural bowl in the mountains. I like El Paso.

I haven't heard much about Juarez calming down, but El Paso itself is very safe.  And I would drive out there.

For those who appreciate data, here is the April 2016 report on Juarez from the State Department:

https://www.osac.gov/Pages/ContentReportDetails.aspx?cid=19527

In summary, crime rates improving, but Juarez still dangerous.  There are plenty of places that I would visit in Mexico, but Juarez today is not one of them.

Geaux Cardinal!

Re: Now which bowl? - winflop - 11-30-2016

My company would not allow me to travel to Juarez when I went to visit a partner in El Paso who had part of their operation in Juarez.

Re: Now which bowl? - Hurlburt88 - 11-30-2016

My company also has restrictions.  There was a good article about Juarez in Nat Geo IIRC about 4 months ago.  Talked about the improvements (some good news) and also had a map showing historic homicide patterns.

Re: Now which bowl? - Mick - 11-30-2016

Can I tell you all how pleased and proud and impressed I am that you won't go to Juarez because it's so dangerous?  312 murders in a city of 1.5 million people last year.  Frickin' pikers.

I'll invite all of you to my current hometown of Detroit, Michigan.  Less than 700,000 population, 299 murders.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Detroit

Homeland Security should issue a travel advisory for Detroit.  Hmph.

While that is a fair point that the danger is likely overblown, I'd bet most of us would be much more in our element in an American city. Id. know what areas to avoid, and how to act in a safe manner. The same can't really be said in Juarez.

...Would you? I mean you could make guesses, but it's not always obvious. There are a surprising number of murders on the streets leading up to the BART station I take daily, despite them looking like pretty much like the mission in SF (wider main street is the main difference). Even though I live here and go past this area daily it surprised me how dangerous it apparently is at the wee hours of the morning.

I would have no idea where to go in Detroit except rules of thumb like "if there are lots of people it's probably fine" and I don't see why that wouldn't work in Juarez.

If you're in the heart of downtown Detroit, you're probably okay.  The police presence is visible and noticeable, and if the weather is nice-ish, then there are typically a ton of people around.  All the major sports stadiums are downtown, the restaurants, Greektown, three large casinos (and believe me, the security/police presence there is Vegas-like), the RenCen (Renaissance Center) is GM's HQ and is across the street on the Detroit river.  Corktown (immediately west, named after Irish immigrants ancestral home) is rapidly gentrifying as is RiverTown (immediately East of Downtown).

That said...driving six of the nine miles on Jefferson Avenue between my office and my home in Grosse Pointe Farms can be an eerie experience.  I've filled up my tank at night, but I don't like it much.  And I got stuck on the main drag at midnight when it was raining heavily, and a very nice fella helped me push my car into a gas station.  My landlord told me the car would be stripped by the time I got back to it in the morning, but it was fine.

Still...there are a few thriving businesses, but they're spaced somewhat far apart.  Pedestrians will wander into the road and challenge cars, similar to what they do in the Tenderloin.  it strikes me as very bleak.  The good news, I guess, is there's a lot of assaults, not as many shootings.  But if you're south of 8 mile, and you're in either the northwest or central east part of the city, you are in a very, very grim area, plus, there are nasty pockets throughout.

If you happen to stand out visually, you may be a target for crimes other than murder.  I would also venture that I'm not sure what the reporting rate of murders in Juarez is...

This is an interesting list:

None of the Top 50 are in Europe.  Four in South Africa, four in the United States.  One in the Carribean.  the rest in South and Central America.

surprised Chicago was not on the list given all the press they get over handgun violence

Re: Now which bowl? - hardball01 - 12-01-2016

For the record, Mexico is in North America. There are 5 cities on the list in our southern neighbor.

I am dubious of the data. Does the government in Vitória da Conquista keep tight records? Maybe.

I was going by the UN geoscheme which places Mexico in Central America.

Re: Now which bowl? - Papa John - 12-01-2016

According to National Geographic, there is no Central America, just North and South:

http://nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/north-america-physical-geography/

My son has an i-Pad app called "Stack the Countries" that also has no Central America.

Re: Now which bowl? - fullmetal - 12-01-2016

Well, I guess that'll depend on whether we're talking continents or geographies.  Thankfully the countries' names stay the same...  ::)

Re: Now which bowl? - Canalejas - 12-01-2016

If you come from a non-English speaking place you might actually be used to calling all Americas (North, South and Central) just America.  Or América, probably.

The Western Hemisphere sure does suck. Although I wonder how accurate reporting is from lots of countries not on (well, and on) the list.

I'm super proud of this team - like I was of the 2014-15 team.  They could have folded and given up after a disappointing start of the season - like say a certain school from the Loser State.  I've been proud of each team since Harbaugh took over.  None have given up.  Each season the team played their hardest all the way through the season.  This has become the essential character of the program now.
