Re: OT: Colin Kaepernick - BostonCard - 08-30-2016

I find the lone trumpeter arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner to be an incredibly poignant rendition, particularly if the trumpeter is good enough to carry the tune.  I am surprised to find that some people feel it is disrespectful.

"the loudest silence I ever heard" is apropos.  Knowing the story makes it even more special.

I really like the arrangement. This one is from the 1972 Rose Bowl vs. Michigan.

I am still wiping tears from my eyes!!!  First, from the incredible cut from the announcers to the first shot of the band - - - - - SMUT          That was the first formation shown on national TV?  I was at that game so I never got to see my mother's reaction.  I'm guessing she laughed as hard as I did.

Then, secondly, whenever the band plays that arrangement and some fierce flyover is timed well, I get all watery-eyed.  :'(

We watched the 1972 Rose Bowl in Modesto with some friends who had no connection to Stanford whatever (except for friendship with a couple of grads). The husband had never heard the LSJUMB version of the anthem; at the end he said it had him in tears. Of course, he admitted that part of his reaction could have been from his hangover...

I have my own private thoughts on those fans, just as I have my own private thoughts about Kaepernick.

Kudos for going 5 pages without a lockdown!

Is it just me or do others wish this was our national anthem?  (Especially this version - not sure how to do that from beyond the grave.)

My favorite SSB renditions (and how 'bout the forgotten War of 1812) are the 9/12/01 Buckingham Palace version, Whitney Houston (just retire it forever), Marvin Gaye, Bela Fleck, Jimi Hendrix and the New England - Philly Superbowl where they made Tom Brady cry (well almost). Usually the National Anthem takes on additional significance when something is really going on, otherwise I'd say playing it before sporting events seems to trivialize the sentiment behind it somewhat. LSUMB rendition is really special if the lead trumpet has the chops to do it.  So will my flag decal still get me into heaven based on this post?  :)

Re: OT: Colin Kaepernick - TreesAndBirds - 08-31-2016

Jacketree, thanks for sharing.

And yes, the SSB leaves some to be desired. But it's not about the words or the music any more. Its about all the people who came before us who sang it, played it, fought for it, were inspired by it, were comforted by it, played ball games after it, stood beneath an Olympic podium listening to it, etc. So despite its flaws, no other song will ever have those things.

Alhough being from Baltimore, I'm biased  :)

Is there another country who's national anthem was written by a lawyer?

Re: OT: Colin Kaepernick - 81alum - 08-31-2016

I personally like our first national anthem, Hail Columbia, created in 1798 under John Adams and in honor of George Washington.  Congress never adopted it, but it was the de facto anthem through the Civil War and on for most of the rest of the 19th C.  Although the Star Spangled Banner references an event in the War of 1812, it did not become our national anthem until 1931--although the song was around as a patriotic song for a few decades before that.

Hail Columbia is available in classical and operatic versions, but Whitney Houston and Marvin Gaye would no doubt have improved it!  It is now used as the Vice President's march.

Hah!  No, actually, but I was curious after Nottingham went there.  Seems it didn't work out for him.

Columbia's anthem is "Stand Columbia."  A completely different song :)  The word "Columbia" was a poetic synonym for the United States in our first century--hence the name of our national district.

A couple of points about our first anthem.  It quotes Shakespeare (the "band of brothers" line.)  It was composed and performed in the time of our founding--embraced by John Adams and George Washington.  Gradually people forgot the meaning of "Columbia" though and the anthem came into competition with newer songs.  "The Star Spangled Banner" really got its start being played at early baseball games, so you could say we have that anthem because of sports.  Hail Columbia was considered too ceremonial for a sporting event--it even would have been considered vaguely inappropriate or disrespectful to play it there, so over time it faded in popularity and the Star Spangled Banner grew in popularity.

Given that we have already ditched one anthem for another, we can only hope that we keep going until we get one that everyone likes and can actually sing.

That will never happen, unfortunately.  Somebody will always be offended by something.

And we're discussing the habits of a run-of-the-mill QB

Last time they met Columbia beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

Re: OT: Colin Kaepernick - Nan3cy - 09-01-2016

As much as I love the Stanford Band's version of the anthem, my favorite rendition of it occurred in 2001. It was the first home 49ers game after 9/11, and an instrumental version was being played. About a third of the way through a few people in the crowd started singing softly, and by the end were joined by pretty much everyone in the stadium. It was a really moving experience.

(That said, it drives me absolutely nuts when cal fans start singing (mostly off-key, though that's probably MY bias) over the Stanford Band version.)

Re: OT: Colin Kaepernick - fullmetal - 09-01-2016

I would love to hear the lone trumpeter version in person from start to finish at some point.

Re: OT: Colin Kaepernick - CTcard - 09-01-2016

Somehow the Canadians singing the American anthem reminds me of a strange incident of my youth.

"O Canada" was bouncing around as the not-quite official national anthem until quite recently, I think finally made official in 1980. Along with that official-ness came some small word changes, getting rid of a few superfluous Standing-On-Guard's and O-Canada's. But people being people, the new words were not an immediate hit.

This led to a somewhat strange situation when my Dad took me to a Winnipeg Blue Bombers playoff game just after the new words became official. Folks were standing, singing along to the anthem. When it got to the new words, the official singer sang the official words, the crowd started in on the old words, then simply started muttering when they clashed with what was being broadcast on the PA. As the anthem ended, massive booing ensued - displaying the universal dislike of change.

I think this is the only time I have ever heard a crowd boo their own national anthem.
Though, the the weenies have come close when they have not been able to contain their booing of the LSJUMB as the anthem starts - admittedly the LSJUMB version is rather quiet at first.
