Re: Ryan Burns it is - Bruce Wang - 08-25-2016

Here's my speculation as to what happened.  I haven't seen enough of either Burns or Chryst to have an opinion on their relative merits.  I base these suppositions on what I've read as an obsessive Stanford fan.  Burns is the more athletic of the two and has a better throwing motion.  During Elite11, I recall Trent Dilfer admiring Burns's compact and quick motion.  The concern about Burns coming out of high school is that he played in a simple single wing offense.  Chryst, on the other hand, has an NFL QB coach as a father so he understood more of the playbook last year than Burns even though he is a class behind. Burns faced such a steep learning curve that a one year head start was not enough to stay ahead.

The conventional wisdom is if two QBs are truly equal, you play the younger player.  I interpret the decision as that Burns has made a clear separation.  Here's why I'm excited about this choice: a) Burns is smart enough to catch up at the beginning of the Spring and now pull ahead and b) he's determined enough that he was not discouraged by getting passed by a younger teammate on the depth chart last season.

I don't see Chryst or Costello transferring.  Costello too young, Chryst a dedicated local and has a year more of eligibility.

What qualifies Chryst as a "dedicated local"? He grew up in San Diego and Phoenix, attended high school in North Carolina for two years (when his father coached with the Panthers) and then two years at Paly while his father coached with the 49ers. Now his father has been fired by the 49ers and will surely move to wherever his next job takes him, meaning that Keller will have no immediate family in the area.

There's no reason for Chryst to transfer immediately, but down the road it could make sense for him (especially as a grad transfer) depending on how things develop, and there's no evidence that his minimal local ties will be a factor in his decision.

Sorry to nitpick but Chryst was at Paly for 3 years.

How "good" is the info posted on RuleOfTree? In this recent article the writer says Chryst is a better runner than Burns... Can't seem to paste it in here but it was posted today (Friday) ruleoftree.com, "Quarterback Conundrum".

Re: Ryan Burns it is - Hulk01 - 08-26-2016

Rule Of Tree recently reported that Jordan Richards played corner back at Stanford.  What does that tell us?

The little bit I've seen of them running, Chryst seems more natural -- reminiscent of an athletic tight end with the ball in his hands.  However, Burns is a capable runner in his own right, and for our offense, that's plenty. We just need someone who can flee the pocket when necessary and keep the defense honest on the occasional option play, which Burns should be able to do.

No mention of Davis Mills?  Isn't he our first ever 5 star QB commit?

I don't know when the star system was started. I think John Elway and Randy Fasani were at the five-star level or whatever the equivalent was at the time.

Back when Elway was in HS we didn't have everyone and his dog covering recruiting. Joe Terranova was the main guru and he had Elway as the #1 QB in the nation, which obviously would have been the equivalent of five stars.

Burns is a better runner, but the margin isn't as great as some might assume.  I agree with Publius that Burns started behind Chryst in the mental aspect of the QB position, but he has in fact caught up to Chryst.  Burns is on an upward trajectory.  The only question is what is his ceiling.  Can he make throws in tight windows in clutch situations?  Accuracy and decision making is so critical at the QB position.  The fact Burns was named starter suggests Chryst just isn't as accurate as Burns, but given it took so long for Burns to separate, it doesn't give you a lot of confidence in Burns' accuracy either.

That and game day decision-making, courage in the face of live fire, etc.  Won't really know until his third or fourth series, I imagine.

Re: Ryan Burns it is - fullmetal - 08-26-2016

Shaw's getting paid a lot to keep his program going.  He's probably making the best decision for the season right now, and he's probably not carving Burns' name in stone as the season-long starter.  It ought to be a fun year.

Do people think Burns is a better runner than Hogan?

I do not, from what little I've seen of the guy.

From what I can tell, nobody has seen enough to know.

There have been posts that have stated "Burns is the better runner" or statements that assume that. There have also been posts (fewer I think) that state or assume the opposite.

I think Burns ran somewhat more often in high school than did Chryst, though not certain.

Re: Ryan Burns it is - Phogge - 08-26-2016

If he ran a true single wing he was a tailback with loads of ball carrying duties. The QB position was a blocking back lining up just behind a guard with a wingback alongside. The fullback was slightly ahead of the tailback and often took the snap. My favorite call in Stanford Stadium in 1956 was "Beamer on a spinner." Meaning that Oregon State COLLEGE FB Nub Beamer took the snap, executed a half or full spin and plunged into the line or handed off to Joe Francis at TB or on a reverse to Ernal Durden the wingback. OSC won the conference and got thrashed in the Rose.

Re: Ryan Burns it is - jacketree - 08-26-2016

I thought Burns ran the triple option in HS.  Whether that was out of a single wing formation or not, I'm not sure. While that doesn't mean he is necessarily a better runner than Chryst, he did it more often.  Also read that because Burns was in a TO as opposed to pro style, he has had to change his playing style more than Chryst and started out behind a bit.

Sounds like it's Burns job until it isn't.  But hey, even the year Josh Nunes started ended in Pasadena.

Re: Ryan Burns it is - 82lsju - 08-26-2016

Burns' senior year in high school

• Threw for school-record 2,530 yards (21.1 yards/completion) and 28 touchdowns in 2012
• Completed 116 of 221 passes while rushing for 222 yards and four scores as a senior

Equivalently for Chryst,

• 149 of 242 passing, 2,672 yards, 28 touchdowns, six rushing touchdowns as a senior
Nothing there on rushing yards in high school.

The quarterbacks wear non-contact jerseys in practice. So nobody ever tackles them. IMO, it's hard to judge whether a QB is a good runner when nobody is allowed to tackle him.

I seem to remember a really rugged run from Keller Chryst against Arizona last year that got called back by penalty. Which is small-sample-size theater but who cares.

I thought that that particular play with the pancake block drew a 15yd penalty on Arizona, not on Chryst.
