Hoping that this is because he blew up his senior year and not because we are desperate to fill the class with warm bodies.

BC

It seems to me with the players we have been attracting we will be very competitive. As long as we start playing in the Ivy League.

RE: Class of 2023 - msqueri - 01-24-2023

Four dimensional analysis on Marceau-Olayinka:

Services: 247 composite NR, On3 consensus NR, 247 NR, On3 NR, Rivals NR, ESPN NR

Offers: Stanford, Massachusetts

Production: Maxpreps did not report any stats for his team during his high school career whatsoever, foiling efforts to determine how dominant he was relative to his peers. Maxpreps judges the competition to be heinous, with the senior schedule bottom eight percent of Stanford recruits and that being the toughest competition he faced (junior year, for instance, was bottom three percent). As a senior, Marceau-Olayinka self-reported 37 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 2 blocked field goals, and 6 passes defended. As a junior, he self-reported 32 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 4 passes defended. He's never played in a game with even a single major college football prospect, at least as captured by the 247 database.

Highlights: In this section my practice is to limit analysis to games against teams with major prospects. Especially for a lineman playing against woefully outmatched high school kids it doesn't strike me as a very good use of time to dissect tape against the Little Sisters of the Poor. I thought about making an exception here as there isn't much else to dig into, but honestly if services, offers, and production are all saying the same thing, that this isn't even a plausibly Group of Five recruit, much less Power Five, it's not worth my time.

I'm so depressed we're likely going to trade Cameron Brandt for Braden Marceau-Olayinka. I hope I'm wrong about that but suspect Brandt to flip to Michigan by the end of the week. Flyer would be a generous term to describe this recruitment. The reality is that Stanford's pipeline is laid very low right now and Taylor has evidently calculated that anybody with a pulse gets a scholarship because there's no point leaving them unused. There's an inescapable logic in that. Beggars can't be choosers and insurgencies are built with insurgents. At the same time, I am starting to get worried about the standards we're setting as a program and the competitive message it sends to the players currently on the roster for us to be recruiting like this. What makes Marceau-Olayinka, Thomason, and Hampton deserving of scholarships rather than Zephron Lester, Logan Berzins, and Caleb Robinson? Or are we just giving everybody scholarships irrespective of competition? Marceau-Olayinka, Thomason, and Caleb Hampton are three recruits in a row with no recruiting profile whatsoever, Ivy League recruits literally nobody in Power Five football wanted. One can imagine taking a flyer or two a year, but at this point over a third of our 2023 class are recruits Rivals gives a 5.5 grade or lower (5.6 being essentially the low-end of the Power Five standard and 17.6 percent of them not having any grade at all. I suspect some here may be annoyed at me pointing this out. "What did you expect?" "Shaw left a bombed out program." "This is what rebuilding looks like." All fair to a point, but I am really itching for Taylor to start getting recruits that excite. We're only 44 days in but so far the recruiting is feeling more like 2005-2006 (late Teevens/early Harris) than 2007/2008 (early Harbaugh). Big caveat because I need to end on a note of optimism: the theory of the case with Taylor isn't and never was recruiting, it was culture, and his identification/indoctrination of his own guys could be part of turning this around, regardless of how low the profiles seem to recruitniks.

Yikes, Squeri.

RE: Class of 2023 - msqueri - 01-24-2023

Four dimensional analysis on Ojarikre:

Services: 247 composite NR, On3 consensus NR, 247 NR, On3 NR, Rivals 5.6 (same grade as Terian Williams, Joshua Thompson, Collin Wright, Kyu Blu Kelly, Nicolas Toomer, Donjae Logan, Malik Antoine, Obi Eboh, Andrew Pryts, Justin Reid, Alameen Murphy, Alijah Holder, Ra'Chard Pippens, Jordan Richards, Ronnie Harris, Michael Thomas), ESPN NR

Offers: Stanford, Georgia State, Troy, Georgia Tech, Duke, Georgia Southern, Kentucky, Army, Boston College, Liberty, Missouri, Tennessee

Production: As a senior Ojarikre played very good competition (top 20 percent of Stanford recruits) but unfortunately Denmark barely reported any stats (and none on defense) to Maxpreps. His highlight videos showed that he had an interception (likely the sole one of his career) by jumping an out route. As a junior against good competition, he had 3.5 tackles per game (tenth on the team), 2 tackles for loss (tied for eighth), 4 passes defended (second), and no interceptions (team had 10, including two players with 3); on offense, he had 4 catches (tied for seventh) for 114 yards (fifth) and 1 touchdown. In track, Ojarikre has personal records of 11.29 in the 100 and 23.49 in the 200 (as a sophomore, but he did compete as a junior), which we can be pretty confident are good gauges of his speed in those events as he competed in full seasons both as a sophomore and junior. Those are competitive but not speed demon times, fairly standard marks by Stanford DB standards (Alijah Holder and Ethan Bonner perhaps a general comparison, though Bonner was much faster in the 200).

Highlights: The junior highlights were strange, only showing three passing plays (one of which was a pass defended and the other two showed Ojarikwe making tackles in space on balls thrown behind the line of scrimmage). Mostly the highlights showed his reads/tackles in support as opposed to coverage. As a junior, Ojarikwe got to go up against Northern Illinois QB signee Mason Kidd but Ojarikwe did not put any pass defense on tape for that game and the only highlight Kidd put on tape was a 36 yard pass beating Ojarikwe down the sideline. Against the talented Grayson team (four 4-star players spread across the sophomore and junior classes), Ojarikre put on tape some tackling in the form of working through a block on the boundary to make a tackle and another play perfectly reading a pass to the running back for a 3-4 yard loss in the flat; highlights for said 4-stars (including Stanford 2024 TE target Kylan Fox) didn't show anything come Ojarikwe's way, though a lower profile future UNLV receiver did have a 36 yard touchdown victimizing somebody else but with Ojarikwe not able to get the angle/catch up in pursuit. Against West Forsyth I didn't see anything matching up with Georgia whale TE Oscar Delp. The senior highlights showed more in pass coverage with 5 passes defended, with the same kind of tackling highlights as before, and "showed" (bad camera work) a punt return touchdown and two receiving touchdowns. The highest profile matchup Ojarikwe ever had in high school was his senior year against Milton, as that featured him head-to-head against Texas A&M 4-star WR commit Debron Gatling. In that matchup, Gatling's touchdown came on the far opposite side of the field away from Ojarikwe, but Gatling did have a first down in which he caught the ball in front of Ojarikwe and then juked our guy to get the requisite yards. Ojarikwe's highlight included a pass defended. On the game Gatling only had 35 yards, 12 of which came on the touchdown and had nothing to do with Ojarikwe, so this is a pretty nice feather in Ojarikwe's cap. Against Roswell, Ojarikwe showed more of the nice tackling but no matchups against the notable Roswell players. Going to those players' tape, I see that Nebraska DB signee Ethan Nation's big play of the game victimized somebody else, Middle Tennessee WR signee Ethan Crite didn't play, and Florida Atlantic TE signee Zeke Moore's highlights just corroborate Ojarikwe mostly showing up on tape from coming in to support in tackling on plays that start elsewhere. Against Pebblebrook, South Carolina WR signee CJ Adams had nearly two minutes of highlights, none of which showed him against Ojarike, while Ojarikwe's highlights included two passes defended on deep balls to the other, lower profile WR.

Now this is a flyer. He's a reach by Stanford's standards but there were Power Five programs in pursuit, one recruiting service thinks he's solid, he's got a good frame and easily competitive speed, and dissection of the highlights reveals much more good than bad. His profile is somewhat strange, with Rivals viewing him competitively (but not reporting on him much) and nobody else having him on the radar at all, which coupled with the solid offers might suggest a late bloomer....yet his offers almost all came before his senior season, so not a late bloomer and presumably somebody whose serious engagement with Georgia Tech and Duke (and supposedly Kentucky) would put him on recruiting service radars. Odd. But in a year in which we have a lot of scholarships and not a super high bar to clear, nor an embarrassment of riches in the position group, it's a very reasonable take. Along with OL Charlie Symonds, Ojarikre is probably the most plausible Pac-12 player Taylor has brought on board. I'll be interested to see what position he is listed on our roster. Teams all told him cornerback with flexibility to play nickel or safety and the way Akina operated at Stanford that would have been basically a lock for how he would initially be viewed at Stanford, but we have new DB coaching and, to my non-coach eyes, Ojarikre looks more like a safety than a corner to me. Our pipeline isn't great shakes at either so I'm interested to see where he slots.

Could we be recruiting a transfer QB?

Not this one.

Please don't use SI "articles" (basically a glorified blog) as a source. All it does is take a 247 article and add zero new useful information.

Huard to Cal Poly. He'll be reunited with his HS coach. I really expected given his status coming out of HS he would go with a higher profile program.

RE: Class of 2023 - msqueri - 01-30-2023

One read is that water finds its level. Another read is that Huard knows Cal Poly is a way station and he's looking for a place he can excel en route to his hopeful return to prominence. Still, it's eye-opening to drop that far down in finding a stage.

RE: Class of 2023 - SamuelMcF - 01-30-2023

I'm shocked - SHOCKED - that a player we were not pursuing at all went elsewhere.

This is a recruit who is under the radar of the radar that it's under.

That's more polite than me, who was going to say he looks 12 years old.

Baby faces are undervalued by other coaches. This is a pocket of recruiting where we can have an advantage. Think Steph Curry at Davidson. We are going to need to find the undervalued "Scott Hattebergs" of college football if we're going to compete in the world of NIL and the portal.

Plus, those aren't the biceps of a 12 year-old!

Congrats to McGee. I wish him all the best at Stanford and hope he gets to play!

There should be another handful of PWOs given signing day is tomorrow. Unless specified otherwise, expect any new commitments to be PWOs.

They chose not to sign (unlike the rest of the class) when Shaw stepped down, indicating (for better or worse) Shaw and Gould/Reynolds were major factors in their recruitments. I consider it a bit strange they didn't officially decommit, considering that's basically what they did.

We signed last-minute commits at RB and DL, which - huh, how about that? - just so happen to be their respective positions.

I'm going with no and hope to be wrong.
