On it's face, this seems a lot like what Stanford is doing. The thing that stands out though is that UDFG hosted 8 DBs and 5 WRs who all hold offers. UDFG isn't exactly tearing up the recruiting trail, but it did already have 1 DB and 1 WR on board. Given the limitations on class size, this strikes me as more of a hard sell tactic than Stanford uses.

This is a list of 28 recruits for the 2016 class who have a Stanford offer AND who have either visited Stanford or put Stanford in a top5 or higher, AND have not either committed elsewhere or released a top list that excludes Stanford. I chose these criteria because they are an objective way to determine who are the recruits who are more likely to come to Stanford. I know this excludes a number of guys who we'd love to see in the class, but it's hard to say that Stanford has a great shot at recruits who don't meet these criteria. I welcome any corrections or additions.Â
QB: Costello (committed)
WR: Long and Stewart ("dream school" and visited); Robertson (Stanford in top3, possibly the leader, no visit yet, academics are an obstacle); Crawford (visited and Stanford in top10)
FB: McElwain (committed)
RB: Bisharat (committed); Speights (top5, but don't think he showed for planned visit on June Junior Day)
OL: Yarbrough (committed); Hamilton (top2 and visited); Herbig ("dream school" and visited for camp); Farniok (visited, no top list released)
DL: Peek (committed); Williams (Stanford publicly in top 4 and appears to lead and he visited); Rand (visited and Hulk says Stanford leads, but no public list, academics are an obstacle)
LB: Robinson (committed); Simms ("dream school" and visited); Winston (Stanford in top3, possibly the leader, no visit yet); Jones (Stanford in top3, but Michigan may lead, no visit yet); Kelly (visited and Stanford supposedly in top10, but no official list)

The two highest rated 2016 recruits who have visited Stanford but still lack offers are Carlo Kemp and Obi Eboh.Â
Eboh is a consensus 4-star DB with a composite ranking around 400 and 20+ offers including Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Amazingly, Stanford may not have room for him. There are already 2 commits and 6 more guys with offers who have shown really legitimate interest in Stanford.Â
Kemp's story seems a little different. He's a bit more highly rated than Eboh. (He's a top 300 composite recruit with a 4-star rating on Rivals, ESPN and Scout, plus offers from UDFG, Michigan, UCLA, Wisconsin and Nebraska.) More importantly though, he plays DE, a position of need and a position at which Stanford has a very thin board. I have trouble understanding the lack of an offer, unless there are academic hurdles. Assuming Kemp's academic house is in order, I'd love to see him come to the July camp and earn that offer. The fact that Stewart, Herbig, and McElwain got offers at the most recent camp has to be encouraging for him.

Kemp came to the April Junior day and did drills with the coaches. He has voiced his desire to play OLB in a 3-4 defense, but the concern is that he may not have the agility nor the tape to support OLB at the next level. He has a build for a 3-4 DE, but has a preference to not put a hand on the ground. So, this is a question of fit and probably the reason our staff has not offered.

Interestingly, Khalid Kareem (a top 2016 DL) will be announcing at around the same time live on ESPN. Most believe he is headed to Michigan, so I am wondering if the timing of this announcement is coordinated? Not the best news for us if it is...

Cross-country recruits are tough to land. And when was the last time a kid from Gilman chose Stanford?Â
Shaw will have to make another OT offer. I wonder about a Cali kid like Alex Akingbulu, who holds an offer from Michigan that might no longer be operative. Or Luke Wattenberg, who committed to UW a few months back. Alves is a good Cali OL prospect but not a tackle. If not one of those guys, then maybe someone who performed well at the June camp ala Nate Herbig.

Herbig is an OG. I think Stanford needs at least 2 OTs in this class since Stanford got only 1 in 2015, 1 in 2014, and 0 in 2013.

Herbig is an OG. I think Stanford needs at least 2 OTs in this class since Stanford got only 1 in 2015, 1 in 2014, and 0 in 2013.

Ah, I get it now. You meant that we need to offer an OT in the manner that we offered Herbig - not that we need to offer somebody with Herbig being an example of such a somebody.
Anyway, Scout quotes Herbig saying that Stanford is looking at him as an OT. Whether that is a passing thought or specifically where they view his future is not so clear.
