Speaking of Oregon.  They choked as well tonight.

Re TX fans, that’s not what I heard after the game.

Talked to a few people who know the game better than me. General agreement that Bruno was getting squeezed in the ninth. FWIW. Will Jeff Gosney join Brandon Cooper in my umpiring hall of shame? Stay tuned.

Would Brando Cooper be the ump who called the regional baseball game between Stanford and Cal State Fullerton some years back with #9 was the Stanford head coach?  It seemed in that game the ump had two separate strike zones, a big one for Fullerton and a small, very small one for Stanford.  That was both painful and aggravating to watch.

That’s the guy. Shotgun Spratling has a very critical article somewhere. Can’t find it now. Here’s a watered down version.

I’m sorry. I love a good ump scapegoat as much as anyone but I can’t put this loss on Blue. Texas led off the 9th with their 6, 7 and 8 hitters. Those three literally watched 18 consecutive pitches go by without even lifting the bat off their shoulders. Those guys weren’t touching Bruno.

If the ump isn’t giving you the corners, adjust and stop nibbling. Bruno’s B+ fastball middle-middle would’ve got the job done in this case.

I go to the Goose pretty regularly, but the food was never as good as the O, and it still isn't :-).

Fun fact: for a few years when I was in grad school I lived in the apartment building diagonally across from the Goose. Agree about the quality of the cuisine wrt the O.

They did that. When the only way you can get a strike is dead center in the zone, bad things happen.

LSJU will win games 2 and 3 because that is what LSJU does.

Meanwhile, the Texas players have some interesting majors. No fewer than 11 players major in something called Physical Culture and Sports.

Others include:

Exercise Science (2 players)
Applied Movement Science (1)
Human Dimensions of Organizations (4)
Sport Management (2)
Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences (1)
Communication and Leadership (5)
Strategic Communication (1)

That was one seriously impressive meltdown in the 9th inning. Giving up 5 runs on 1 hit is really hard to do.

I don't know why Esquer pulled Drew Dowd. He was going great.

It made no sense whatsoever.  You an always bring Bruno in if Dowd gets in trouble in the the 9th.  That decision cost us the game and I see no basis unless you are following some theory that says always bring your closer in when ahead ahead going into the 9th.  Dumb!  Sometimes you have to let the players play the game when they are doing well.
add - what is going on with the outfield? An almost collision in the early innings, then another in the 9th. I thought someone had responsibility for calling those kinds of plays.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - gailtate - 06-11-2023

Could have sworn Shaw was advising Esquer and Eager in top of the ninth.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - vataha - 06-11-2023

My immediate reaction to Bruno entering the game was “frickin’ analytics”. It seemed like the call to Bruno was more formulaic than an actual feel for what was happening.

With that being said, we’re still in it, Go  Cardinal!!!

I like your optimism. My Anti-Analytic" tells me that yesterday may have been the equivalent of Dusty Baker in Game Six of the '02 WS. Giants never got over it.

The quotes from Esquer after the game were extremely positive on the team. I guess if there's a guy who can get the team to "flush it", it's him.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - MiniBlueHawkCard - 06-11-2023

About last night...I was raised by a pessimistic father to be a pessimistic sports fan. In many ways it is a coping mechanism, with the thought being the worst case scenario won't hurt as bad if you see it coming. For the most part, this philosophy has in fact soften the blows over the years. Not last night. With each passing "ball" most of us could see the avalanche coming down the mountain and it still hurt like hell when it got to us.

About today, and the last three years...For the core of this team, their time in a Stanford uniform is nearing an end. After throwing a pity party for myself last night I hope I (and all of you) can enjoy this team for all they brought us fans. This group made Omaha tangible again. This roster is a beautiful mix of future major leaguers and guys who found a role, even if that role took forever to present itself or changed throughout their career. This team found solutions from within when seemingly everyone else found theirs in the transfer portal. Of course Stanford baseball has plenty of resources at their disposal so this is far from a "little engine that could" story but their sustained success over the last three years puts them at the top of the sport. Here's to hoping for at least one more game with this bunch!

See 2010, 2012, 2014.  Yep, the Giants did get “over it”.  It just took a while……

I mean 10 Stanford baseball players are majoring in Science, technology, and culture. I wouldn't bring majors into this fold.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - CompSci87 - 06-11-2023

i understand STS (or is it STC now?) is popular among athletes because it's flexible, so you can find courses that fit your schedule. Not because it's an easy major. Well, maybe it could be relatively easy for Stanford depending on exactly what courses you pick.

Even if it is easier than most other Stanford majors - and I have no idea if it is - I mean, c'mon, those Texas majors are effectively Underwater Basic Weaving.

STS is an objectively easy major. https://sts.stanford.edu/courses/approved-program-core-courses

Science to me is Chem, Physics, Biology, etc

Tech to me is actual engineering aka Comp Sci, Mechanical Engineering, BioEngineering, Electrical Engineering, Aero Engineering, etc

https://sts.stanford.edu/courses/approved-program-core-courses

To satisfy your "Science and Engineering"requirement, you can take Ethics in Bio Engineering or Global Warming or Airpollution History or Environmental Journalism. Where is Multivariable calculus, Linear Algebra, Organic Chemistry, Circuits etc etc?

STS offers both BS and BA degrees. For BS degrees, students must include "courses involving lab work, engineering problems, coding, or other technical work in science, technology, or medicine."

Go figure.
