I'm not sure that our showing on Saturday and Oregon's showing on Saturday didn't have something to do with some of this.  Had the tables been reversed and we were the second game I sure we would have made sure the recruit noticed the difference.

If kids are making decisions RE: Stanford vs. [insert name of school] based on the results of an early season game AND it has nothing to do with admissions, then they probably don't have the "je ne sais quoi" to be successful at Stanford.

Maybe.  I remember some kid who chose UCLA over Stanford saying something like Stanford academics would be too distracting from my football goals.  Diffrent strokes.

Seriously, this has nothing to do with wins/losses not at this point of the season at least. This has everything to do with marginal academic profiles whose early indicators suggest the Stanford path just isn't going to work out for them.

Kids can be mercurial, but I think it's rare to find any that will make a college decision based on the outcome of one game. They mostly go where they feel the most "comfortable", which of course means different things to different people. I think when you are going after highly rated prospects, elite academics can be a double edged sword. It appeals to some of them, but may actually be a negative for others.

Ugh. That's never good to have out there. It speaks to the young man's character that he felt the need to call out a negative for Stanford rather than just focus on the positives at Oregon. He could have just said "After visiting UO, I really feel like this is the place I can see myself being happy and successful during college. Thank you to Stanford for the interest you showed."

So when do the  Plan B DL guys start getting offers, and who are they?  Or is it not time to hit the panic button yet?

Wilkins and Donnely are certainly high priorities, but they would be even with Manu.  Doesn't Stanford really need three or even four DL in 2015?

We badly need those 2 and Green. Plan B offers will be coming as soon as the coaching staff doesn't think we can get 1-2 of those 3.

I wonder whether Drayton Carlberg is still a possibility.  He's got offers from a bunch of quality programs, plus he self-reported a 3.5 and some interest in Stanford early in the process.  His top 6 does not include Stanford (no reported offer), but does include kal, so he's willing to come out to Cali for the right opportunity.  Jackson Perry, David Ryslik and Simeon Lane are the guys listed on Rivals as reporting Stanford interest, as well as a combination of offers from at least one Ivy and at least one FBS school each.

I guess he was just being honest. 

We Stanford folks are open-minded and open-armed but we are pretty proud and I'd put us over on the plus side of judgmental.

Judgmental is a strange word to use. It suggests someone at Stanford told the kid he was doing something wrong and he didn't agree...

Or someone decided to demonstrate superior vocabulary and dazzle a poor hs kid.  Happened to me, a poor public hs kids, several times my freshman year.  I finally told one to f himself and it stopped.

That's my best guess. I don't think the guy has been on the Stanford campus since he committed some time ago (after raving about Stanford and saying there was no way he would change his mind). Did he just wake up one morning and decide that? Did someone sent him a text message?

You never know what is going to stick with an 18 year old.  When my kids checked out schools, it was all intuition and what they thought was the feel of the place. 

One of my kids almost turned against a school because of a single crabby employee at the student housing office. 

The student who led me on my tour of Stanford was a smiling surfer girl and the one who took my on my Harvard tour was high strung and brilliant.  My 18 year old head might have found her to be "overbearing or judgmental".  I just know I was freaking cold on that tour and wanted to get inside.

It's always been weak sauce to me when kids previously committed to Stanford all of a sudden claim they lost interest in Stanford, when the reality is they were admissions casualties.  Just man up and say "I wasn't able to get in."  It's even OK to add "I disagree with the decision and will use this as motivation wherever I do attend, and throughout my career." One can also say "It wasn't meant to be."

Guys like Doug Randolph and Rex Manu don't show great character when they try to make a decision to de-commit from Stanford look like it was their decision when it wasn't. This is why you root for a kid like Christian Folau, who admits he has a lot of work to do to get into Stanford.  He's not afraid to make it clear the only reason he would de-commit from Stanford is if he is denied admission.  Similarly I'm rooting for Kirk Tucker and Deante Gray, as I'm sure all Stanford fans are.
