One correction, Mick - Grandal is the Pirates’ starting C.  Bart is the #2.

Too true. I got excited because Bart started two of the three games vs. the Giants and Grandal is hitting .213/.224/.409/.633.

So much of catching is defense, including pitch calling and framing.  At best, Bart is a below average receiver.  Unless he improves his defensive skills, he will struggle to become a regular catcher at the major league level.  His future might be as a DH if he can keep his strike out rate at a reasonable level (currently it is above the MLB average).  There is no doubt he can hit for power when he connects.

Right, and I get it if you're Fisk, Rodriguez or Bench...or Bailey or Posey. But Yasmani Grandal? His defense is mediocre at best. In 12 games, he has had two passed balls (Bart has 1 in 18 games), Grandal has more errors (3) than Bart (1), his fielding percentage is worse than Bart's (.973 to .992) and Grandal's range factor is virtually identical to Bart's (9.08 to 9.04). The only metric that he's materially superior to Bart is throwing out baserunners, and Grandal is below league average (20%). Grandal has led the league in passed balls three times in his career, in fact he is the career leader among active catchers. He hasn't led or been among league leaders in any major catching category in a number of years, and he allowed the most stolen bases of any AL pitcher last year (98). He never won a gold glove. In just 12 games caught, he's 4th in the league in most errors. Grandal is 17th in pitch framing and Bart's 26th, true, but they're not that far apart. Grandal is old, and it shows...Grandal's pop time is 60th among catchers, Bart's is 14th. In 2024, Grandal's Rtot is -4, Bart's is -2.

In spite of Luciano's third late inning error in three games (5 in 8 games), Giants had a nice 7-2, come from behind win. Wisely, 3 for 3. Hicks pitched well, as did the relievers. Doval, very clean 10th inning. Luke Jackson got the win, is 3-1 with a 5.40 ERA.

Luciano 4 9th inning errors in 5 games.  Incredibly exciting week of baseball.

Tough ruling on the error.  I thought it should have been called on Estrada.  Regardless, a big league SS has to make the play.

More exciting than we want it to be...

Another good game today before a sellout crowd. Snell survives 5 inn, Rodriguez great again, and Miller, Walker and Doval fin[sh off 8-4 win. Wisely continues to star, BUT Wade injured hamstring and probably on the IL again.

If only there was a left-handed, power-hitting first baseman available on the market, maybe one with an .850+ OPS, or a 135 OPS+. Even better if he could put some butts in seats and was popular with Giants fans...

Angel Hernandez retired. And there was much rejoicing...

Belt was almost exclusively a DH last year.  Plus it would take him at least 3-4 weeks to get ready.  Not impossible.  But not likely.

Right. Only 29 games in the field and 69 as DH. Still...he only had one error in those 29 games. He has lost a step, his range factor is lower than league average for 9 innings. His Rtot was strong from age 27 - 32, but then started to decline. It was -2 in 29 games at 1B last year. And he had an .858 OPS in 404 plate appearances. Not sure what he's doing to be prepared.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - old spanish trail - 05-28-2024

Spencer Howard called up from minors to pitch bulk innings at least tonight. Over four years for Phillies and Texas he totaled 3 wins 11 losses with 7.20 era.

He struck out four Phillies in four innings...for the first time this season, the Phillies have lost three in a row. Wheeler looked great pitching the first six innings, striking out nine, two hits. Too bad we lost him.

Erik Miller of Stanford, great opener. The pitching staff (Miller, Rogers, Howard, Tyler Rogers, Hjelle) spread seven hits and two walks for the overtime walkoff win. Chapman had several stellar plays, Estrada and Wisely did quite well. Matos, flyball scored Fitzpatrick from third. 34,655 spectators went home happy...

Giants, 29-27 now has the fifth playoff position/second wildcard, Padres have the sixth playoff spot at 30-28, behind the Giants by .001. Giants are 5.5 back of the Dodgers, having gained three games in the last 10 on LA.

Kyle Harrison goes against Philly (best record in the NL) tomorrow, then they have the Yankees (2nd best record in the AL) for three games starting on Friday.

Great game. Giants with 4(?) hits and excellent pitching and defense. Howard did well, but ooof, some of those pitches looked hittable.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - lex24 - 05-31-2024

Now the Yankees.  Giants have scored 2 runs since losing Wade.  Hopefully a coincidence. But that is a major loss. He’s on base almost half the time.  He’s there best hitter overall.  And has been their best with RISP.

The Braves have lost Strider and Acuna for the year.  Question if they are an elite team without them.  This could be a season where all three WC spots are up for grabs.

Yep and yep.

Hicks vs. Stroman tonight. ERAs both very good. Stroman's a righty. My guess is we see Bailey, Chapman, Wisely, Estrada, Yaz, Matos, Ramos and Soler. Should be a good game.

He actually had a pretty good game. Unfortunately, the Giants could not place outfielders in the seats.

Extension for Doval? I really hope this isn't true.

Giants discussed monster extension with All-Star closer

As we discussed recently, the article touches on the idea of trading Doval and moving Rodriguez to closer.  I like this idea of selling high - if Rodriguez continues to prove he could handle the job, Doval might be on the move at the trading deadline.

As long as we’re in this Division, we need everyone we can get. A few too many AAAA guys and journeymen the past few years IMHO.

Oooof Doval, not today. Plus Snell groin strain repeat.
