I'm scratching my head to remember if Musial, Aaron, Rose or many others went on the DL for "soft tissue issues."

What's soft are today's players despite all the weight training and "personal chefs." Gonzalez is out with a "back strain." I bet Al Kaline had plenty of strains and still played everyday in right for the Tigers.

There’s also some survivor bias here. Phogge picked a few players known for their durability. The oft injured players of yesteryear mostly disappeared into the realm of guys who had an unremarkable stint in the majors.

But he’s right that objectively, players are on the DL more frequently and for longer than in the past.

Part of this is undoubtedly better diagnostic ability. The football "Its just a bruise" equivalent is not available when the MRI says otherwise. For established major league players, both the team and the player undoubtedly are on the same page. They both want to preserve the player and both are somewhat risk averse. As the Giants (and every other team) are proving, developing "genuine" major league players isn't easy so you want to preserve the ones you have. Young guys coming up are in more of a bind. They don't want to miss an opportunity to advance and they don't want to be seen as "injury prone". I suspect they are much more likely to play through injuries if they can.

Davenport, the Alous, Harvey Kuenn, Mays, McCovey, Pagan, Spencer, Bailey, Haller, Hiller, et al consistently played for seasons without getting hurt. The Giants suffered two horrendous injuries in those years with Hart being beaned and Cepeda hurting his knee in a stupid spring training sprint with Herman Franks. Neither was soft tissue although many would say Hart's head was empty.

Lex is probably correct to some extent about the money but players were tougher in those days. Especially pitchers.

I think players are on far better shape today than the 60s. And it’s not just money as minor leaguers get hurt far more often than the 60s.
I go with Goose and technology.

Bobbbbb, where is your data for "minor leaguers got hurt more often in the 60's?"

I knew a ton of minor leaguers in the 60's. A few made the Bigs. Most weren't good enough. Mike Adamson got hurt but that was in MLB. I can't remember anyone else.

Sorry Bobbbbb, read it wrong. Too much weight work for baseball. The best players I faced were strong in their own right and didn't need weights. I ran 20 75's everyday, did some pushups and sit ups and did 100 hot boxes on days I didn't pitch. We played pepper every day and it made me a better fielder. Never did a curl. Only baseball drills. My soft tissues were perfect.

Giants offense currently anemic. Slater walks to lead off the 8th in an 0-0 game. Kapler does his L/R thing and pulls Joc. Of course Slumping Ruf hits into DP. Billybean Ball says never give up an out so rather than attempt to bunt Slater over they give up two outs.

Mental and physical errors and crummy hitting. Giants lineup: 216, 248, 272, 239, 257, 218, 243, 176, 238. White Sox are 5 under 500. Their lineup: 337, 300, 285, 285, 223, 189, 242, 197, 286. With Belt a step slower on D, Longo same (though not today), a rubber arm SS, and a below average LF who should be the DH, and you wind up with another loss.

Watching the River Cats on Channel 44. They actually have an offense. Villar single, double, HR. Diaz has a sweet swing. Hit his 15th. Johnson at bat, Steve Sax says he should bunt, Johnson does on the next pitch for a hit, steals his 18th.

As I’m watching Joey Bart hits one toward Marysville, 453’. Mercedes hits one toward the Milk Farm.

Shelby Miller looks good in relief.

They give a correction, Bart’s is 484’.

Honestly, Donovan Walton should not be in the majors, much less playing the important position of ss. He's arguably responsible for 3 losses because of crummy defensive play, and has a bases loaded homer to win a game. Otherwise, he's hitting .175 or so, basically a black hole. Yikes. Is there no possible replacement in the minors for when Crawford and Estrada are on the bench?Couldn't be any worse?

Hmmmm….   A guy who married into the Walton fortune does own the Arsenal, the Rams, Nuggets and Avalanche (the latter two in his wife’s name). There could be something to this, Phogge…..
