Daria Gusarova, paired with 39-year old Erika Nystrom, will be representing Cyprus at an FIVB Futures event in Egypt.  Pool play should be getting underway shortly.

And Xolani Hodel and Iya Lindahl will be one of two USA women's teams there.  Fortunately, they are in different pools.

Gusarova and Hodel each went 2-0 in "modified pool play", winning their pools.
They get first round byes in the elimination bracket.
If they win their quarterfinal matches, they will meet in the semis.

Gusarova and Hodel each won their quarters in straight sets and meet in the semis tomorrow at Noon (2:00am PDT).

The semifinal and medal matches all went three sets with at least one extra-point set.

Hodel & Lindahl beat Gusarova & Nystrom 21-19, 18-21, 16-14, then lost the gold medal match to a Lithuanian team 21-23, 21-18, 15-13.  So they take home silver.

Gusarova & Nystrom lost the bronze medal to a different Lithuanian team, 21-13, 30-32, 15-12.

AVCA has named their 2023 Junior Beach All-Americans, including two Stanford freshmen:
Clara Stowell (1st team)
Chloe Hoffman (2nd team)

Recruit Ivanna Rivera will be on one of the teams representing Mexico at the FIVB Beach World Championships in October.  (Pools were just drawn, they are in Pool I.)  Alix Klineman is coming back from maternity leave and got a wildcard entry (one of five US women's teams).

On Saturday, Kate Reilly and Emma Morris won the "CBVA Premier Tour: $2,500 Gene Selznick Hermosa Beach Women's Open".  Xolani Hodel and Ashley Vincent tied for 3rd.  Taylor Wilson (with Quinn Perry) tied for 9th.

Reilly & Morris (nominally) win $1250, and Hodel & Vincent got $300.

It's great the players can get high-level competition during their off season.

I saw in the SF Chronicle that Kal AD "Knowlton said he expected beach volleyball to join the MPSF with UCLA and USC."  Which is pretty much what I was guessing.

Daria Gusarova will be representing Cyprus at the 2023 Mediterranean Beach Games, in Crete.

Daria Gusarova and Erika Nystrom placed 7th at the Mediterranean Beach Games.
In the first elimination round, they knocked out Daria's younger sister, Alexandra ("Sasha"), who was playing on the #2 Cyprus team.

Stanford recruit Ivanna Rivera is on one of the teams representing Mexico in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
Playing with Susana Torres, they are seeded 40th of 48.  Starting pool play today (Pool I).

Not surprisingly, the Rivera/Torres lost (21-12, 21-9) to the 9th seed (from China), and to the 16th seed (USA; 21-11, 22-20).  At least the last set was close. 

They have one more chance; if they can upset the 33rd seed from Spain, they could still make it into the elimination rounds.


Alix Klineman and Hailey Harward (38th) won their first match, upsetting a German team (11th).

Looks like the Stanford beach team had a scrimmage with Cal today.  The 'elitebeachvolleyball' account posted a couple of IG stories showing action on the Stanford beach courts.

Rivera/Torres lost 21-16, 21-15, to the team from Spain. They will not move on.  I hope it was a good experience for them

(The Spanish team had to withdraw from their second match on Saturday, but with a day off, apparently were able to recover from whatever ailed them.)

ETA:  Alix Klineman and Hailey Harward went 1-2 in their pool, but lost the tiebreaker and finished 4th, so also finished tied for 37th.

Stanford teams won their pools; Hodel/Rockwell 2-1; Hoffman/Reilly 3-0.

Nice showing (so far) for the freshman/senior combos! (Both H & R names...)


Hoffman/Reilly are now seeded 13th in the winner's bracket, taking on a Hawaii team at 9:00am tomorrow.
Hodel/Rockwell seeded 14th, take on an LMU team at 10:00 am.
If both teams keep winning, they won't meet until the medal matches.
