And the Giants actually win a Snell start! Nice comeback win!
RE: SF Giants 2024 -

Yesterday, I predicted that Stanford's football team would win at least five games (over/under is 3.5) during its inaugural ACC season, in part because I was thinking about body clock performance. Four of Stanford's opponents are coming from the Eastern time zone and will likely kick off the games at 10:30 p.m. body clock time, and a fifth is coming from the Central time zone.
On July 4, 2015, I took my youngest to a Giants vs. Nationals game, the opening game of a road trip for the Giants. To accommodate parking for fireworks, the Nationals got the starting time of the game moved back to 11:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. body clock time for the Giants. First pitch was actually 11:24. I told my son, prepare for the Giants to get slaughtered...which happened. Baumgarner started and his first six pitches were as follows: home run, double, strike, ball, home run, single. He then got two outs on warning-track flyballs. Giants lost 9-3.
Today, the first pitch is at 9:30 a.m. body clock time. Pittsburgh is pitching Paul Skenes, their phenom. He's had two starts, he's 1-0, has a 2.70 ERA. 18 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched. Might be a rough day for the Giants. On the other hand, Stanford's Erik Miller gets the start. Lineup: Matos, Wade, Estrada, Chapman, Soler, Yaz, Ramos, Casali and Wisely.
Separately, after 30 games, the Giants are averaging 32,850 per home game, which projects to home attendance of 2.66 million. Better than last year's 2.51 million, so...progress. The team
is more interesting, and if they get over .500, perhaps they'll do a smidge better. I'll see them on 6/16 (rather than watch the finals of the U.S. Open).

It’s not often two teams play three consecutive games in which a team overcomes a 4+ run deficit. Fortunately for SF, they were on the winning side twice.
On to NY, where another two out of three would keep the momentum going. With Harrison, Hicks and Webb scheduled to start, chances for a series win look good.
Thought for the day - Randy Rodriguez is a “closer-in-training”. Might it be time to think about trading Doval at the deadline for needed help elsewhere on the team?

I was thinking the exact same thing. Doval scares the heck out of me and has bad body language on the mound. Rodriguez is absolutely dialed in.
It's the first time since 1998 that the Giants have overcome two 4+ run deficits in two consecutive games.
Chapman was just extraordinary, both in the field and at bat. 3 HRs in three games. Stunning play after stunning play. The closeout was his fielding of a grounder right in front of the shortstop and a laser to first. Perfect. Right now, Chapman has tied for 2nd best career batting average and his best OPS in five years.
Chapman has the 2nd best 3B WAR in MLB, Late Night LaMonte is 3rd best at 1B WAR, Yaz is #4 overall in RF. Pinch hitting is up there, too. The rest...not so great.
Giants OPS is now up #15 in MLB at .699 and #17 in runs scored. Their ERA is #25 and WHIP is #26, so there's room to improve on pitching. They're T15 for most errors.

Depends. If they are in the thick of it, I wouldn’t deal Doval. Rodriguez still has to prove he can be consistent. He also has to show he can take the wear and tear. If he does, he becomes an 8th inning option.
These days, you can’t have too many good arms in the bullpen.

Agree, Les. Rodriguez has been phenomenal, but if he was always this good, wouldn't he have been here sooner? Great, fun games the last two days especially after the stinker Tues. Pleased to know I can't criticize Chapman right now. Hope it lasts till Sept.

Doval made his debut in SF as a 23 year old. Rodriguez made his at age 24. Both were international free agents who signed as teenagers. It takes a while to acclimate to living in the US as well as learn how to pitch to professional players.

Let's add that Bryan Reynolds kid when we craft the future trivia question: "What is the only team that came back from four-run deficits on the road where
two of that team's
former draft picks hit grand slams against them? Name the teams and the former draft picks."
San Francisco Giants, two road wins over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Grand slams hit by Joey Bart (2018, #2 overall pick by SFG) and Bryan Reynolds (2016, 2nd round pick by SFG). And Reynolds also hit a home run in yesterday's game. Matter of fact, all six Pittsburgh runs were driven in by home runs from ex-Giants; Bart, Reynolds and McCutchen:

Holy cow. Three road wins in a row with deficits of four or more runs. Hasn't been done since Cardinals, 1932. Chapman saves game with incredible barehanded pickup, bases loaded, one run already in on Doval, full count...Chapman guns it to Late Night LaMonte who picks it clean on the short hop, they survive a challenge.
As for Marco Luciano...he's not ready. MAN, is he not ready. Doesn't run out a grounder, basically jogs into second base. Could have/should have been safe. Fumbles a ninth inning play in the field
again. I don't think he'll be sent down, but it wouldn't surprise me. He had a triple, he's hitting .409, which would be best among shortstops...but he's painful to watch in the field and on the basepaths. Four errors in eight games. Yikes.

Not running out a grounder should by itself result in him being sent down. The fact he is hitting right now, and the Giants need all the offense they can get may save him for now (although IMO it shouldn't). However, he won't hit like that forever and when he slows down at the plate hit other less-than-acceptable attributes will send him back to AAA. Sending him down now might get his attention. Doing so later may not.

Luciano’s WAR = 0.5
Ahmed’s WAR = -0.1
Speaking as a big fan of Luciano, I want to see him starting every game at SS with Ahmed (once he is healthy) replacing him late in games in which SF has the lead.
Luciano has a very bright future with SF. The sooner he gets his feet wet at the big league level, the better it will be for him and the team.
He has the potential of being a .300 hitter with power.
There is a reason the Giants have finally come alive offensively - Matos, Ramos and Luciano….
When Slater returns, Ramos may be sent down. When Ahmed returns, I think Luciano will remain with the Giants. We shall see.
As for the base running blunder, a couple conversations with the coaching staff and/or peers will put that problem to rest. I don’t expect to see anything like that again.
RE: SF Giants 2024 -
Mick - 05-25-2024
Luciano's a strong hitter, no question -- and as a general rule, I prefer homegrown players over free agents. Ahmed has no bat. He's
very dependable in the field. My guess is that Ahmed has never had four errors in any eight game stretch in his career. To be fair, Luciano only had one error last year in 13 games, and his range factor (small sample size) is superb, considerably better than the league average.
Other fun facts:
- Giants' team OPS+ is 108, 8th in all of MLB.
- Giants team ERA is 25th in MLB, but their FIP is 13th.
- Chapman has #1 WAR among all MLB third basemen, Wade is #4, Yaz is #5, Bailey and Conforto are #7 at their positions. That's the good news.
- Not so good news...Jung Hoo Lee, #17, Estrada #20, Soler #23, Starting pitching #26, relief pitching #27, Nick Ahmed/Luciano #28, and pitching overall #29.
- Team fielding, Giants have 7th most double plays. That's the good news.
- Team fielding, Giants have -26 Rtot, worst in all of MLB, 24th in fielding percentage.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/2024.shtml
It all adds up to 26-26...Padres have the 6th playoff spot at 27-27. My take is that the Giants are starting to gel, and I'm
really glad the youngsters are here and doing well.
https://www.mlb.com/standings/wild-card/league
Not incidentally, I'm very happy that Joey Bart is a success as the new starting catcher for the Pirates. His hitting line is 267/.362/.517/.879, third best BA on the Pirates, best OPS, best slugging average. He's an okay fielder--he'll never be Patrick Bailey, much less Johnny Bench -- and he's only caught 1 base stealer in 20 attempts, but he has just one error and one passed ball in 18 games, so...good for him. Change of scenery is doing him well. And while I'm on that topic, former Giants on the Pirates roster hold the best OPS (Bart), third best (Connor Joe), 4th best (Bryan Reynolds) and 6th best (Andrew McCutchen). Nice to be the Pirates' farm team...

Agree with all except re Slater. Maybe they slow walk his return for 2 or 3 weeks to continue evaluation of Ramos. Ramos so far has done nothing to be sent down. Dunno what happens to Slater if Ramos continues to shine, and I'm also a Slater fan for the obvious reason.
Also a Luciano fan. He consistently hits the ball hard to every field. Only concerning thing is that his glove is occasionally at the wrong angle, like the missed DP yesterday, which leads to an error. That should have been corrected by now.

So much of catching is defense, including pitch calling and framing. At best, Bart is a below average receiver. Unless he improves his defensive skills, he will struggle to become a regular catcher at the major league level. His future might be as a DH if he can keep his strike out rate at a reasonable level (currently it is above the MLB average). There is no doubt he can hit for power when he connects.

Right, and I get it if you're Fisk, Rodriguez or Bench...or Bailey or Posey. But Yasmani Grandal? His defense is mediocre at best. In 12 games, he has had two passed balls (Bart has 1 in 18 games), Grandal has more errors (3) than Bart (1), his fielding percentage is worse than Bart's (.973 to .992) and Grandal's range factor is virtually identical to Bart's (9.08 to 9.04). The only metric that he's materially superior to Bart is throwing out baserunners, and Grandal is below league average (20%). Grandal has led the league in passed balls three times in his career, in fact he is the career leader among active catchers. He hasn't led or been among league leaders in any major catching category in a number of years, and he allowed the most stolen bases of any AL pitcher last year (98). He never won a gold glove. In just 12 games caught, he's 4th in the league in most errors. Grandal is 17th in pitch framing and Bart's 26th, true, but they're not that far apart. Grandal is old, and it shows...Grandal's pop time is 60th among catchers, Bart's is 14th. In 2024, Grandal's Rtot is -4, Bart's is -2.
In spite of Luciano's third late inning error in three games (5 in 8 games), Giants had a nice 7-2, come from behind win. Wisely, 3 for 3. Hicks pitched well, as did the relievers. Doval, very clean 10th inning. Luke Jackson got the win, is 3-1 with a 5.40 ERA.
