* Awesome layout catch for Yaztremski on a hard-hit ball down the right field line that was slicing away from him. His spectacular play robbed Mookie Betts on extra bases and saved an RBI. Not a productive night for Yaz at the plate but he is making loud contact. (The layout catch is in the Youtube link below)
* The top of the Dodger line up is ridiculously intimidating - Betts, Ohtani, Freeman, Smith, Muncie
* Jakson Reetz pinch hitting with Patrick Bailey available is puzzling unless the Giants aren't confident with putting Bailey back behind the plate. Perhaps they felt he needed another day? Reetz did a plausible Schmidt impression in two at bats (meaning he was ineffective and overwhelmed). Honestly, he looked like a man happy trying to swat a fly while blindfolded using a chopstick.

Bailey was not available. He is having more concussion problems and his back on the IL. It’s a little scary actually.
The rest is spot on. It’s essentially Charlie Dressen time “the Giants is dead.” But it’s not 1951 and there was no Willie Mays in the farm system. Heck there’s not even a Willie Kirkland.

Really liked this move. I heard that Casali, one of the producers of Kapler's amazing 2021 team, got teary-eyed when his agent told him he was heading back to the Giants. I remember he caught something like five shutouts in a row.
And he caught a great game tonight, a 4-1 textbook win over the Dodgers. Matos great catch in virtually the same place that lost Jung Hoo Lee possibly for the season. Yaz, two run home run. Ramos and Matos both with RBIs. Casali, Wade and Estrada all scored. Webb pitched well, got the win and evened his record at 4-4. Doval was electric, 7th save.

The scoreboard showed Bailey on the short list of batters available for pinch hitting duties in the 9th and 10th. When we didn't see him at the plate it was a warning sign this could be serious (just as you mention above!).

Fun facts:
1. Giants have lost five frontline starters to injury in the last week (Murphy, Bailey, Lee, Conforto, Ahmed, Slater) but Soler will be back Friday, and Snell back on the next road trip).
2. Going into last night's game, the Giants were 10 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
3. Only 1/3rd of NL teams...5 out of 15...have winning records.
4. Consequently, the Giants are just 1.5 games back of the last wild card spot.
The good news is that I'm virtually certain no Giants will get injured today.

Giants made an interesting move in signing 26 year old Jerar Encarnacion to a minor league deal. He was playing for Oaxaca of the Mexican League, having hit 19 home runs in 34 hits (he was 34 of 93). Yes, the numbers are inflated both by the altitude (Oaxaca is at 5,100 feet, below that of Mexico City's stadium) and the lesser competition. He committed six errors in the outfield in a season for Jacksonville in the International League, so he's not a Mays-like outfielder.

Encarnacion’s a typical Zaidi player.
His strikeout rates:
MLB career: 39.5%
Last year at AAA: 38.8%
If he ever makes it to SF, he will last a week or two after hitting an HR and striking out 40% of the time. At that point, he will disappear into the legions of guys who can say they played for the Giants during the Churn Years…….

Pretty good day today, a 14-4 with the Giants beating the Rockies for the third straight time, the first three-game win streak of the year. Coming into the game, the Rockies had won seven straight. Some highlights:
- Giants had 18 hits and nine doubles...the 9 doubles is the second most for the franchise since 1906.
- The slumping Chapman went 4 for 4 with a walk, raising his BA to .236 and OBP to .292.
- Recent DL returnee Soler went 3 for 5, now hitting .219, OPS of .691 and rising.
- The kids did great, Matos (6 RBIs and 3 hits), Ramos (2 hits), Luciano (2 hits).
- Casali went 1 for 2 with two walks. Not bad for an old catcher.
- Estrada went 2 for 4.
- Harrison for the win, now 4-1.

Finally, a three game win streak (1 v. LA, 2 v. Colorado)…..
The streak began on SF’s 45th game of the season.
Only once since the Giants moved west has the team gone longer from the start of the season without posting three consecutive wins. In 1972, the Giants started their first three game winning in their 68th game.

Hate to say it, but I think you're 100% accurate on Slater. He's only 31. He really broke down young. He looks overmatched at bat.

Four wins in a row. Hicks got the win, he's 4-1, 2.38 ERA. Late Night LaMonte Wade Jr., Yaz and Casali all had two hits. I don't think either of Casali's hits could have broken a pane of glass. Chapman, 1 for 2 and a walk. Ramos, first HR in a while. Giants only had five strikeouts. Relievers Hjelle, Jackson, Taylor Rogers and Doval all looked good, collectively 4 IP, 2 hits, 2 walks, no runs.
Team now 23-25, just 1/2 game behind the Padres who currently hold the last wild card slot. 10 of 15 NL teams still below .500.
Giants are off tomorrow, then six road games against the Pirates and Mets, both teams slightly behind the Giants in the standings. Third game against the Pirates on Thursday is a 9:35 a.m. body clock time.

Looking forward to Thursday - Paul Skenes is scheduled to pitch for the Pirates. I watched his debut v. Chicago, he is as good a prospect as I have seen in some time. Should be a good game….

Great, GREAT win. Down 5-0 midway through the game, down to their last strike, the Giants scored nine unanswered runs for a 9-5 win. LaMonte Wade had three hits and three walks, on base six times. Last Giant to do that? LaMonte Wade, last year. Wade's OBP is .484, he'd be leading MLB if he had enough ABs. His OBP yesterday was .373. Ryan Walker got the win, he's 4-2. Disconcertingly, Snell was shelled for four runs in 3 1/3rd innings.
Chapman closed it out with a rocket. Joey Bart hit a hard line drive down third base line, Chapman knocked it down, got the runner by a step. Chap had an HR earlier, too.
Giants pitchers struck out a collective 15 Pirates. All five relievers have sub 3.00 ERAs (Hjelle, 2.89; Rodriguez, 2.53; Ty Rogers, 2.28; Walker, 2.42; Doval, 2.75).
