And of course the snowballing homeless and generally grubby street population is the big deal now.
And first the retailers on Market St and Union Square, and now the big employers have responded.
SF is on life support, indeed. Will it go through the rehabilitation and/or gentrification that some other downtowns have?

Sorry for the thread drift but growing up in the 50s and 60s my cousins lived in the heart of the City and I was out running around with them all the time. Even then we knew to avoid the Tenderloin and SOMA was really seedy.
I just read that because of numerous incidents and complaints, Hartsfield Airport in ATL is finally closing some terminals late at night to all but ticketed pax to prevent the homeless from sleeping and bathing there. I wish I had the wisdom and the wherewithal to solve the homeless problem but I just don’t.

The homeless issue has been there for a very long time. I had business in the Civic Center in 1989, and I recall walking to the middle of the center and turning in a slow circle...homeless in every direction.
My 6'4" son lived there in college and walked to work with a big knife in his pocket, which, thankfully, he never had to use. He lives in SF today, about two blocks from Aquatic Park and enjoys it very much. My older son (32 and recently engaged) used to rent a house in Seacliff with five other single men and enjoyed it, but he wouldn't live in that city. My sister lives in St. Francis Woods with her stockbroker husband, and they appear to like it, but they sent their kids to USC, so what do they know?
I've been accosted violently twice in San Francisco. I lived and worked in Detroit for four years, never happened once. I've spent two years of my life in Chicago, never happened once. I spent a year of my life in NYC, never happened once.

I saw a very good CBS Sunday morning segment on how Houston has dealt with the homelessness problem. They’ve cut into it fairly significantly by putting almos most their resources into housing. With the philosophy being get the homeless housed first and then worry about dealing the associated problems such as substance abuse, mental health, etc. it has been quite quite successful.
It is a vexing problem to say the least. Having said that, I don’t think San Francisco is done a very good job of handling it. I love the city and I always will. But I don’t enjoy going in as much as I used to. And that for me is sad
The other big problem the City has is an enormous amount of empty office space. I have read there are some plans to convert some of the buildings into residential. Which to me makes perfect sense. New York did that after 9-11. They did not just rebuild office buildings but instead built a lot of mixed-use retail-residential, etc. I think San Francisco needs to do the same. Whether it can do so given all the bureaucratic red tape is another issue.
Going to my first game this year Saturday. They play the Reds who’ve lost eight in a row. I guess one of the teams will have to win.
Mason Black is pitching I think. That’ll be fun

Have a great time. Blake Snell has a rehab start in San Jose for the SJ Giants on Sunday. Haven't been able to convince Mrs. Mick to attend, we'll be walking the Dish on Mother's Day.

BTW, Ross Stripling was the pitcher who got the ball rolling with his public anti-manager comments on Sept. 9 last year, as he was rehabbing. Didn't know how he was being used, he said. After his rehab, they put him in for four innings against the Dodgers whereupon he gave up four earned runs in four innings to fluff his ERA to 5.57. He finished the season with an 0-5 record and a 5.36 ERA. And to absolutely no one's surprise, Stripling is leading all of major league baseball in losses with six this season. He's 1-6 with a 5.14 ERA and leads the majors with 56 hits allowed. Guess last year's manager had him pegged.

In addition to Jeffries being sent to Pittsburgh, Mitch White was DFA’d, Ahmed was put on the IL and Schmitt was recalled. Today, Slater was placed on the 7 day concussion IL (and Bailey was recalled from that list), Reetz was sent down and Wisely was brought up from Sac.
Much like what we have seen throughout the Zaidi era, lots of tinkering at the edges but nothing substantial….

Both are true.
SF DFA’d White. Then the Brewers made a cash offer to circumvent having to go through the waiver process. Kinda like when SF DFA’d Bart and the Pirates offered to a trade to avoid losing the opportunity to pick him up on waivers.

Nice win today, 5-1 over the Reds, Taylor Rogers got the win, Mason Black pitched 4+ innings, gave up just the one run. Chapman got the monkey off his back with his second career grand slam, and fifth home run of the season. Stanford's Erik Miller continues to reduce his ERA with another inning pitched without a score. Down to 4.66, got his fifth "hold". Giants pitchers hit three Reds batters. Flores went south of the Mendoza line, now hitting .198 with two strikeouts. In a rarity, there were three Giants outfield assists, Ramos threw out two runners at 2nd base, Yaz threw out a runner at 2nd base.
Fitzpatrick played CF, Casey Schmitt at 2B. Ahmed on 10 day DL, left wrist injury. Bailey, coming off of a concussion, is wearing a new mask, similar to a hockey goalie's mask. Supposedly it will cut down on concussions.

Beautiful day. Fun game. I’ll go to a few more. But between the 2 hours it took to get from the EB into the stadium, the $120 ticket (good seats club level behind the plate ), $50 parking (ridiculous) and $30 for a Bratwurst (very tasty ) and a Coors light, it’s mostly TV games for me.

Just listening to the broadcast last night as I was driving home from SFO, Ramos is playing insanely well. Hope it lasts and is contagious!

Just back from the May 14 Dodger/Giant game (Game 1 of the series). Fun day at the park despite the overtime loss.
* Casey Schmitt looks completely overwhelmed by Major League pitching despite his success yesterday against the Reds. What happened to the confident rookie the Giants called up last year?
* Luis Matos needs to at least make a try for that 10th inning long ball to the wall in centerfield that won the game for the Dodgers. I think June Hoo Lee makes that play. Matos was happy to play the carom. He had a similar non-play earlier in the game.
* Awesome layout catch for Yaztremski on a hard-hit ball down the right field line that was slicing away from him. His spectacular play robbed Mookie Betts on extra bases and saved an RBI. Not a productive night for Yaz at the plate but he is making loud contact. (The layout catch is in the Youtube link below)
* The top of the Dodger line up is ridiculously intimidating - Betts, Ohtani, Freeman, Smith, Muncie
* Jakson Reetz pinch hitting with Patrick Bailey available is puzzling unless the Giants aren't confident with putting Bailey back behind the plate. Perhaps they felt he needed another day? Reetz did a plausible Schmidt impression in two at bats (meaning he was ineffective and overwhelmed). Honestly, he looked like a man happy trying to swat a fly while blindfolded using a chopstick.
