Too bad for White. Jeffries gets another chance based on Spring ball, I guess. So far, he's been worse than ineffective.

Could he work with aging power (?) hitters as well? Chapman hitting .215 with a maybe 25 percent strike out rate. And the errors??? Soler still looking lost. Is Pat Burrell effective, etc? Haven't scored more than 3 runs in how many games?

I think you are correct. Which leads to the question - why bring up Jeffries today if he is going to be DFA‘d tomorrow?
Regardless, it is definitely time to see what Black has to offer…..

On the good side, Reetz has a .500 career MLB batting average. On the not-so-good side, Reetz is 28 years old and has a AAA slash line of .234/.328/.478/.806 and about the same at AA. He runs into one every now and then, 29 home runs in 500 ABs at the AAA level, about the same at AA. He struck out 152 times in 500 ABs at AAA, slightly worse in AA actually. So...I'm guessing a stat line of 4 ABs, 3 Ks, maybe a HBP (he gets hit a lot).
The Jackson Reetz era is upon us. Hope he enjoys his cup of coffee...he's thrown out 30% of baserunners, not a terrible fielder.

After Blake Sabol went 0 for 2 with two strikeouts, Jakson Reetz hit a home run in his only at bat in the top of the ninth.

Reetz's major league batting average is now .667. His career line is now .667/.667/2.000/2667. His OPS+ is 613 (100 is MLB average). He actually has a positive career WAR, 0.2.
Maybe trot him out there again, especially after the Phillies stole four bases in four attempts against Sabol. Appeals to my sense of humor. ;)
Seriously, I don't think he'll be a hitting revelation. He was only hitting .217 in Phoenix. But six of his ten hits were for extra bases...

Giants lost 6-1 today. Black blanked the Phillies for three innings, they scratched out a run in the fourth. Manager left him in for the 5th inning when he blew up. 10.38 ERA. Not that it mattered, the Phils struck out 13 Giants (11 by former Giants draft pick Zack Wheeler), allowed just four singles, a double and a walk.
Not even June yet and the Giants are tanking like crazy. 16-21, 8 games back of the Dodgers, 3 games back of the last wild card spot, 4th place in the division and on track to win 67 games.

Ouch. Wheeler for Beltran. That was one for the ages. Right up there with Cepeda for Sadecki and Clark for Murcer. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

Yes, things look bleak. That said, the Red Sox are a tough team at home and the Phillies are both the best team, and the hottest team in baseball right now. 1-5 is disappointing, 3-3 would have been a miracle. . . .

The Phillies appear to be hot right now because they just finished seven games (winning six) against the dregs - Angels/Giants. It is a mirage. The best team without a doubt is LA. They have managed to win 65% of their games with a patched up rotation. Now that their injured pitchers are beginning to return, they will lap the field.
As for the Giants, they are in deep trouble. They can’t hit, they struggle on D and their pitching is inconsistent. And a lousy finish will not help them in the baseball draft having given up their #2 and #3 choices to sign Chapman and Snell.

The Giants sold the trade to the fans thusly: Jack Clark was injury-prone and had played in just 57 games. And the Giants had needs across the board. Rajsich was a throw-in, but the other three were supposed to be major contributors. As it turned out...
1. Uribe was a pretty good shortstop, a very strong fielder, and took over for Johnnie LeMaster. That was popular.
2. Dave LaPoint was a much-needed starting pitcher, but went 7-17 in his only season as a Giant, following two 12-win seasons as a Cardinal. Victim of circumstance a little bit, had a 3.57 ERA, pitched 206 innings, highest of his career.
3. David Green played first base, and was supposedly the big "get." Was supposed to be Bonds-like, stole 34 bases and had 15 HRs the prior year. Turned out to have a severe case of alcoholism. I remember the first time he admitted it to a reporter, it was at breakfast and the reporter noted that he was having a beer with breakfast. Green's reply was that beer wasn't alcohol. He had a miserable year for the Giants, 5 HRs, 6 SBs and a .647 OPS.
4. Jack Clark became an all-star in two of the three years following the trade. I still remember a throw he made from RF to home plate that was an absolute laser. He actually had a better OPS for the Cardinals and Yankees than he did with the Giants.
Not a good trade.

Second consecutive victory over the Rockies last night. Little bit disquieting...Hicks (3-1) had to hold on for an 8-6 win after sailing to a 6-1 lead through four innings. Camilo Doval (3.95 ERA...yikes) gave up a two-run jack. Hjelle was hjellish. On the bright side, they turned three DPs and are 2nd in MLB with 39 DPs (the A's are first with 41). Sabol and Conforto had three hits, Chapman and Yaz had two hits. Soler's on the 10-day DL, and Heliot Ramos was called up, went 1 for 4. They play Colorado (8-28) again today at 12:10.
SF's attendance for the upcoming nine-game homestand should be interesting. They drew 24k, 25k and 30k for the Mets, but 37k, 35k and 36k for a weekend series with the Pirates. Not bad. But I'm concerned about future attendance. The University of Toronto, analyzing cell phone data, has found that visits to downtown San Jose (+28.2%), LA and San Diego (20%+) and downtown Oakland (+20.6%) have skyrocketed, while visits to downtown SF have (-21.6%) plummeted:

Downtown Recovery | School of Cities
And as of April, 2025, Google is leaving downtown San Francisco, as has KPMG.

I'll be curious to see how the Giants can increase their home attendance as businesses close in the City proper.

I hope Colorado’s 8-28 is not the real reason behind these last 2 wins.
Painful to see downtown SF sliding away. I lived in the City for a dozen years from my mid-20s to my mid-30s. It was a great place to be young and single and to have a nice job to afford the lifestyle. But when it became time to settle down and start a family, the choices were predictably clear. Hence the suburban flight we’ve seen so much of.
And of course the snowballing homeless and generally grubby street population is the big deal now.
And first the retailers on Market St and Union Square, and now the big employers have responded.
SF is on life support, indeed. Will it go through the rehabilitation and/or gentrification that some other downtowns have?
