I remember seeing Bailey's college stats and thinking in my John McEnroe inner voice "You
cannot be serious. This guy can't hit, shouldn't be a first round pick, and we already have Joey Bart." I realize they took Bailey because he was more like a 3rd/4th pick, who agreed to sign for much less money.
And you're right...Bailey's literally twice as good a hitter as a lefty (.252/.370/.481/.851) as he is a righty (.133/.243/.217/.460) or at least he was in 2022

But at that point, I think his Giants career is essentially done.
Two thoughts on Perez: first, he frames the plate very nicely. I can see why Giant pitchers like throwing to him. IMHO, he stole a couple of strikeouts today. Second, as bad as Robert Perez has looked at the plate, Bart looks much worse. Perez has caught both games. Today, he struck out three times in four ABs and is 1 for 6 with four strikeouts across the two games. While Perez struck out 8 times in 23 ABs in the spring, Bart struck out 11 times in 28 ABs. Ugh.
Giants have struck out 29 times in two games...and hit two home runs and three doubles. Crawford hit an HR and double today -- he went 3 for 5 -- and Yastrzemski hit two doubles. Cobb pitched well, gave up an unearned run on his own throwing error (which would have gotten him out of the inning). It was the Giants' only error in the first two games. Junis, Rogers and Doval each gave up a run. Doval walked two and gave up two hits. Yikes...he couldn't locate either his fastball or his slider.
Yankees tomorrow. Ross Stripling vs. Jhony Brito. No sign of Slater. Piscotty asked for his release and is currently a free agent. Tristan Beck was still on the 40 man roster as of yesterday.

Apropos of nothing…. 21 out of 22 base stealing attempts were successful on Opening Day (only Toronto’s Matt Chapman was unsuccessful). Does it really matter who is catching? With the new rules in place, you probably won’t stop the opposition from stealing second anyway…..
They will look to trade Bart if Sánchez gets ready
I thought Joey Bart's days were numbered on the day they drafted Patrick Bailey.

Bart just went on 10-day IL, Hjelle recalled.

Giants have now been shut out twice in three games, so they're on pace for 108 shutouts. The record is the 1908 St. Louis Cardinals, who were shut out 33 times in the dead ball era and the 1963 Mets who were shut out 30 times in the live ball era.
Giants have also struck out 41 times in three games. Prorated over 162 games, that means they're on pace to strike out
2,214 times this season. The 2021 Chicago Cubs batters hold the record of most strikeouts at
1,596.
Giants have 19 hits in three games. Prorated over a season, that's
1,026 hits. The worst the Giants have ever done in a 162-game season was...last year, with
1,261 hits.
Trivia: in which full 154-game season did the Giants have more than 1,026 hits? Answer:
all of them.
Trivia part two: when was the last full season that the Giants had fewer than 1,206 hits? Answer: 1994, when the Giants played 115 games (963 hits).
Makes you proud...

It may be three games, and it is certainly not likely the Giants will set franchise records for futility based on them.
That said, they suck until proven otherwise.

The Yankees may be the best team in baseball, playing at home, on opening weekend. The Giants earned a split. I’ll need a lot more results before declaring the season a disaster.

Had KNBR on the radio yesterday morning, Marty Lurie was saying how the Yankees, after you get through Judge, Rizzo and Stanton, don't have any hitters and that they aren't equal to the hype.

Okay, then let me put it this way. The Giants have had double digit strikeouts in all three of their games so far. If they just
average 10 per game for this season, that puts them at
1,620 or 34 above the league record.

Which confirms the belief that, in order to be successful, you need at least a couple guys in your lineup that cause heartburn for pitchers every time they come to the plate. This year, SF has zero. Therein lies the problem…..

Worried about the offense this season. At this rate, the Giants will be shut out 108 times, far eclipsing the 1908 Cardinals MLB record of being shut out a mere 33 times in one season.

Yet the Giants hit 7 HRs today. It’s a long season
RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread -

SF is on pace to hit 364 HRs this season. The current MLB record is 307 ( Minnesota 2019).
RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread -
lex24 - 04-03-2023
Damn near hit 9. Craw hit one that was caught at the wall. And Pederson was robbed of what may have been an HR.
RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread -

I take it all back. Giants Rule. The rest of MLB (except the Yankees) suck.
7 HRs. Two by Villar, one each by Pederson, Yastrzemski, Conforto, Estrada and Bryce Johnson. Came close to the Giant record of 8, set in 1961 (Mays 4, Pagan 2, Alou, Cepeda). Very impressive. And they went below 10 strikeouts...they had nine.
Also impressive were plays made in the field by Crawford, Villar and Yastremzki. Giants have just one error in four games, just behind the Cardinals, Rangers, Mets and Pirates who (currently) have zero.
DeSclefani was a terror...he got the win, gave up three hits, no walks, no runs.

What do you make of a team that hits 9 HRs and scores 19 runs in two of four games, and also goes scoreless in two of four games?
Yes it's a small sample size, but these are just crazy polar extremes.
The pitching has been more consistent (-ly bad); 5, 5, 6, 3 allowed. That pace isn't going to lead to a winning record.

4 games. Giants offense will be as good as their ability to score when they don’t hit HR’s. I think they will hit between 180-200 HRs. They have to supplement that be being able to score without the long ball. To do that, they will need to cut down their strikeouts. They lack speed which hurts.

As of this morning, here's the Giants' rank in the major hitting, pitching and fielding categories:
Hitting (runs/game) 15th, (HRs) T2nd, (stolen bases) 7th, (BA) 20th, (OBP) 15th, (OPS) 9th
Pitching (runs/game) 16th, (ERA) 17th, (WHIP) 9th
Fielding (Rtot) 15th, (attempts) 18th, (errors) T4th, (double plays) 24th

That's a great story, except that the slot value for the pick was $4.197 million and Bailey signed for $3.8 million, less than a 10% discount. Third and fourth round slot values ranged from 431k to 857k that year.
He may or may not turn out to be a valuable MLB player, but the offensive bar for catchers is incredibly low at the moment, and he did win the minor league gold glove at the position last year (there's one gold glove awarded for each position across all of minor league baseball, meaning all levels).
Regarding his college statistics: he hit 302/411/568 for his career while playing in the ACC, 296/466/685 his junior (i.e. final) year, almost as many walks as strikeouts overall. You can question his batting average, except for the fact that no team puts weight on batting average, in fact statistics themselves are only a small part of the evaluation. Still, a well above average defensive catcher with a .466 OBP in a major conference doesn't equate to a third or fourth round grade, which is why he was paid almost $4 million.

The Giants had an overall pool of $9.2 million for their five draft picks. They saved on Patrick Bailey (and others) in order to spend just under $2.5 million -- not $710k, their third round slot value -- on their 3th round pick that year. Fella by the name of Kyle Harrison. Their last two picks, Dabovich and Murphy signed for just $197,500 and $22,500 respectively. All of the savings on each draft pick helped the Giants to sign Kyle Harrison.
Frankly, I thought all but Kyle Harrison were a stretch.
