RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-26-2023

Stanford beat Washington today plays ucla at 10:15 tomorrow

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-26-2023

First round of the Pac-12 Championship.

"The international team" (as I call them) of Andersson & Gusarova got the first point with a pretty easy win at the 5s.

The 3s (Reilly & Sharp) came through with the next point, but it took them three sets.

Hodel & Kriz had a weird match:  won the first set 21-11, lost the second by the same score.  Third set was just underway when the dual ended, as the 4s (Belardi & Vincent) won their match in two.

Stanford will take on UCLA at 10:15am tomorrow.  If they win, they don't play again until Friday morning.  If they lose, they will play a contender bracket match at 5:15pm Thursday (vs. one of the Arizona schools).

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-27-2023

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-27-2023

Hodel and Kriz to set 3 losing set 2 22-20

The final Match Stanford won the first set. 9-9 set 2

Hodel and Kriz win 16-14. It’s 2-2

Reilly and Sharp drop the second 18-21, and we go to a decider.

It's also worth noting that #1 UCLA's #4 pair was unbeaten this season, until Belardi and Vincent beat them.

Reilly/Sharp up 11-9 in the decider.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-27-2023

Stanford wins. First ever win over ucla the #1 team in the country

Wow. Reilly and Sharp with the win

STANFORD TAKES DOWN THE BRUINS!

In some good news, #3 seeded California took down #2 USC, so it's Stanford vs. California for a spot in the finals at Pac-12's. It's wild to see that USC and UCLA now have to go through the Contender's bracket to get to the final.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Canalejas - 04-27-2023

That's so cool!

Now it's time to beat the weenies.

I wonder if the LA schools have found a landing spot for their beach volleyball squads after they move conferences. Nebraska is the only other Big Ten school with the sport, and it appears that they play as an independent.

Thanks I was about to look that up

Impossible result.  I just saw this now.  I didn't watch because I didn't want to see a 5-0 drubbing of Stanford.  How could this happen?  I love that video of the final match point;  the UCLA player totally shanked the serve receive on a pretty easy serve.

That's an interesting question about UCLA and USC beach teams when they join the Big-10.  Can they just go independent?

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-27-2023

When the move to the big 12 was announced
Both schools asked that certain sports continue with the Pac whatever

It appears both water polo beach and MVB
Could stay with the big 12. But that’s older news

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Canalejas - 04-27-2023

Here is the NCAA directory listing for schools that play beach volleyball:

https://web3.ncaa.org/directory/memberList?type=12&sportCode=WSV

Beach volleyball is an NC sport, with schools from all three NCAA divisions playing for a single unified championship.

Starting this year, the NCAA tournament will be a 16-team single-elimination tournament.

https://www.ncaa.com/news/beach-volleyball/article/2022-07-15/beach-volleyball-championship-format-change-2023

Quote:With the bracket expansion and the addition of automatic qualifiers, the committee determined that a national selection process should be implemented.

If automatic qualifiers means autobids for conference champions, then I think the LA schools will want to avoid the independent route.  Perhaps they can ask to join the Big West or West Coast conferences as affiliate members.  Perhaps UCLA should join the public schools in the Big West while USC plays against the private schools in the West Coast.

Or they can try to make the sport an MPSF sport, in which case they'd likely be joined by Cal State LA and Concordia Irvine. There are some Texas schools available to be added to the league, should the MPSF need more than 4 to get an autobid.  The options would be East Texas Baptist, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Texas.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-27-2023

VERY EXCITING MATCH!

And USC was upset by Cal.  (I have to admit, I was rooting for Cal in that one.)

USC and UCLA are supposed to stay in the Pac-12 for beach volleyball.  Given that they have all the national championships (so far), I guess we can keep them.

Oh, I figured that there would be enough bad blood to preclude the conference from accommodating them. But I guess not.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-27-2023

USC and UCLA could probably make it as independents in BVB.  They also have #5 LMU, #10 LBSU, and #19 Pepperdine in the area, so plenty of local competition.

Notes on today's big win.

The dual started with the 2s and 4s playing, and both Stanford teams won their first sets 21-19.  There was a controversy near the end of the first set for Belardi & Vincent.  Tied 19-19, it looked like UCLA got the kill.  But Coach Fuller was immediately up and yelling, and the down ref ran over to the talk to the up ref.  The point was awarded to Stanford, and Fuller got a yellow card.  I had to watch my recording to understand what the call was.  The UCLA player had made double contact on first contact, on a play that was not considered a block, and therefore was an illegal double.  Stanford closed out the set on the next play.

Belardi & Vincent won the second set, giving Stanford their first point.  Unfortunately, Ekstrom & Harvey were not able to win their second set, or the tiebreaker.  So 1-1.

The 1s (Hodel & Kriz) started on court 1 with a first set win, but lost a close second (20-22).  Meanwhile, the 5s (the international team) went down in straight sets, putting UCLA ahead 2-1.

As the 1s played their second set, the 3s got started, and won their first set.  The 1s pulled out a very close victory in the third set, retying the dual.  So everything was up to the 3s, who also went to a third set.  It was very close set, tied at 10-10, IIRC.  Finally Stanford created a little lead, and got to match point, 14-11. And that's when Emmy Sharp served up the ace to win it all.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-27-2023

UCLA was scheduled to play Arizona (double elimination tournament) at 5:15 pm today.  I don't see anything on live stats at the moment so maybe it hasn't started yet.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-27-2023

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-28-2023

Just noticed that Pac-12 Bay Area, which is carrying all the beach preliminary rounds, is NOT carrying the championship.  That is on the 'national' network (which I don't get).  Well, if Stanford is in it, I'll be there in person.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-28-2023

Belardi and Vincent win their first set
13-13 set 2

Ekstrom and Harvey lost their first set it’s 11-11 set 2
