RE: Class of 2023 - msqueri - 10-06-2022

Four dimensional analysis on Williams:

Services: 247 composite #931 (#83 Edge), On3 consensus #794 (#75 LB), 247 #91 Edge, On3 #105 LB, Rivals #40 OLB (5.7 grade, same grade as Ese Dubre, Tristan Sinclair, Aeneas DiCosmo, Jordan Perez, Kevin Palma, Fred Craig, Johnathan Frink.....I'm purposefully comparing his grade to ILB or potentially ILB types as that's his apparent Stanford position, but note that the services evaluate him as an OLB), ESPN #68 OLB

Offers: Stanford, Boston College, Cal, Arizona State, Colorado, Colorado State, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisville, Marshall, Memphis, Michigan, Nebraska, North Texas, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, SMU, South Florida, Tulane, Utah, Utah State, Washington

Production: So far as a senior against really good competition (we'll see where strength of schedule ends up but right now it's top 16 percent of Shaw recruits) through only five games, Williams has 10.6 tackles per game (fourth on the team), 10 tackles for loss (first) 4.5 sacks (first), 3 passes defended (fourth), 2 forced fumbles (first), 2 fumble recoveries (first), and a blocked field goal (one of two on the team); on offense he has 2 catches for 22 yards and a touchdown. As a junior against above-average competition, he had 9.9 tackles per game (third), 24.5 tackles for loss (first), 11 sacks (first, next closest was 4), 6 passes defended (tied for fourth), 2 forced fumbles (tied for first), 2 fumble recoveries (tied for first), and 2 blocked punts and a blocked field goal (the only blocks on the team); on offense he added 4 catches for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns. The coolest thing is that he had 1.5 tackles for loss in 11 of 13 games. That's nice. As a sophomore, he had 4.8 tackles per game (12th) and half a tackle for loss (tied for 14th) against really good competition (FYI, he was teammates with our Austin Uke that year); he also had one 25 yard catch. As a freshman he got his feet wet with 2 tackles and half a sack. He also plays midfield in lacrosse.

Highlights: Williams' highlights show him as an edge player, sometimes DE and sometimes OLB but not much of how we presumably envision him. The freshman (non-varsity) highlights are a mix of edge and wide receiver. The sophomore highlights show him setting the edge, a couple plays in coverage, some kick coverage, and some more receiving. As you can tell from the stats, junior year is really when he started wreaking havoc rushing the passer, getting tackles for loss on run plays, and getting a paw on balls either rushing the passer or dropping into coverage (though those were more in transition than running downfield with receivers). My general rule is to only go in depth on film analysis if the commit faces future major college football players and there's really none of Williams against that kind of competition as a junior. In the John Paul II game, current UCF OL Caden Kitler was playing center and Williams was on the edge and they didn't square off. Similarly, as a senior I didn't see him against UTSA OL commit Isaac Sohn in the Aledo game, or any highlights of interest against Aledo's several prospects. Against LBJ Austin there were a few open field tackles of Vanderbilt RB commit Sedrick Alexander. He really has played one game against a bunch of future major college football players and that was three weeks ago against South Oak Cliff, home of Jimmy Wyrick. That was Williams' only game this year and only the second in the last two years without a tackle for loss. He still mustered a good number of highlights but it does bear mentioning he wasn't wreaking havoc like against less stout competition (which is what we usually see...players always do better against worse competition). The highlights for TCU OL commits Brione Ramsey-Brooks and Narado Stoker seemed fairly inconclusive for evaluating Williams.

If we lost out on Tom Williams' son we should shut down the program, but that was never going to happen. Tre Williams' interviews make pretty clear this was preordained from the cradle. But this isn't just a legacy son of our former captain/defensive coordinator, it's a solid prospect. He's a legitimate Power Five guy by recruiting service estimation and a quite credible one by offers and production. For us that's a really notable recruiting win if we do expect him to play linebacker. We've recruited the edge well but we've hardly recruited what we call "inside linebacker." In our current defense that's a position that often has three guys on the field and pretty much always has at least two. For that to be a dumpster fire - which, let's be honest, it is - is a big problem. Williams is a nice improvement to that pipeline. His mid teens of Power Five offers is certainly much more than the low single digits Rose and Hudson brought and even more than Dubre. And with Dubre not asserting himself yet it's not clear what we have in him. Williams will have every opportunity for major playing time. My concern is the disconnect between Williams' body (which suggests we'd slot him where our need is at ILB) and where he's actually played to date. His tape is on the edge and he's been quoted (in the context of being recruited by Oklahoma State and Michigan, which know much more about defensive football than us) as preferring edge and being able to rush the quarterback. Inside linebacker is a particular skillset that I have no idea if Williams has. And whether he's good at it or not, we have more work to do as our pipeline there is just too pathetic. One caveat: we don't actually know what head coach/defensive coordinator/base defense Stanford will have when Williams matriculates.

RE: Class of 2023 - newguy - 10-07-2022

if Williams was recruited by Oklahoma State and Michigan, then i'm glad he chose us.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 10-07-2022

Given the lack of depth at some of the LB positions, Williams was a must-get.  Glad he's on board.

In the bigger picture of the '23 class, not much in the way of surprises recently.  Esera and Thomason committed to BYU and Williams committed to Stanford.  Stanford does have a good history with LDS recruits, and has a couple this year, but it's tough to say the losses were too unexpected.  At this point, I haven't heard about any new offers or other movement, so it looks like Stanford still is waiting on Su'a, Newsom, Smith, Johnson, Hughes, and Lee.  They all look like quality recruits, and given the current class size and anticipated transfer portal attrition, Stanford needs all the quality recruits it can get.  I have to think admissions will play a key role in most of these decisions, but it's tough to know for sure.  Also, I don't know what hope there is to land a scholarship level QB in this class, but I'm still holding my breath.

Who are "Smith" and "Johnson"? Smith Snowden (unsure) and Jaylen Johnson (definitely off the board as we have 2 RBs already)?

At least 2 of the other 4 recruits you mentioned as "waiting on" have been admitted already.

Not sure about QB.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 10-13-2022

You correctly translated my gibberish. Yes Smith Snowden and Jaylen Johnson.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 10-18-2022

Couple of crystal balls for Smith Snowden to Utah. Including Steve Wiltfong, which is a grim sign. Hopefully Shaw still can land a couple of the remaining recruits at least. As of now, it’s only a class of 14, and 2 of those are taking an LDS mission.

RE: Class of 2023 - Maple Leaf - 10-18-2022

If the Delusional Domers implode there may be some of their current commits who were being recruited by Stanford who may decommit and might be in a position to be admitted.

Surprised more offers have not gone out, especially on defense. Stanford needs linebackers and safeties.

Back on July 2, I expressed concern about the size of the class (which was then only 9 scholarship recruits committed to matriculate in 2023).  At the time, Samuel gave us some comfort that things might turn out okay:  https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=20001&pid=357275

At this point, it's starting to look how you would expect for the recruiting class of a football program that is circling the drain.  It's possible that the class could turn out to be something better than a complete disaster, but it ain't going to be good.

RE: Class of 2023 - newguy - 10-18-2022

is anyone coming back from a mission in Fall of 2023?

We're not done.

Well, that is certainly welcome news.  Still, if Stanford were to land Leviticus Su'a, Cayden Lee, Smith Snowden, Asa Newsom, and Elijah Hughes (which I think is all of the remaining realistic Plan A/A-/B+ recruits), would that be an acceptable class?  It would be a class of 17 matriculating with only 1 of those matriculating recruits rated in the top 350 of the 247sports composite.  Granted, Shaw has gotten commitments from two more excellent recruits who are scheduled to arrive in 2025 after they each take an LDS Mission.  But those recruits will not fill any anticipated needs for a long time.  And the QB depth chart looks alarmingly thin.  Is there a potential solution to the hole at QB in this class?

RE: Class of 2023 - Phogge - 10-19-2022

Stanford recruiting... yawn.

Assuming the Emperor With No Clothes remains on the throne he better recruit the guys who may want to leave via transfer. That is, the ones who are worth recruiting.

Staples is an Edge from Oakland who camped with us.

Ahmari Borden - JohnR34231 - 10-29-2022

Saw Ahmari Borden on TV last night in a losing effort against my kids old HS.
Looked pretty good. Had a couple of long TD catches and a nice punt return that he almost took to the house.
Couldn't find the actual stats.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 10-31-2022

More Class of '23 offers:

Cisse and Staples look like the type of Plan B recruit Stanford ends up taking most years.  Each of them reports several other Pac-12 offers.  They aren't top 1000 overall recruits on 247's composite, but they seem like credible recruits.  And in this challenging recruiting environment for Stanford, I'd be happy to see Shaw land either one or both of them.

Harris' recruiting profile, however, is almost non-existent.  He had no major conference offers until last Friday, I couldn't even find any high school stats for him prior to this Fall.  The glimmer of hope is that he may just be a late bloomer or late to start playing football.  His stats at Berkeley (HS) this year are excellent and he did just land back-to-back offers from Stanford and kal.  Given Stanford's anticipated roster and the lack of bodies, I can see why Shaw might make offers like this one, but it still reinforces the observation we've all made, which is that Stanford recruiting appears to have taken a hit compared to the glory years.

As opposed to last-minute Plan B offers to total studs like low-3* Denzel Franklin, low-3* Jay Tyler, 2* Paxton Segina, and 2* Dorian Maddox. Michael Rector was a similarly low-rated guy who worked out well though, FWIW. As was Drake Nugent.

We've had 1-2 of these basically every year. The issue is the lack of premier recruits - or as Matt likes to say, DUDES - at the top.

Fair point.  I guess I am just thinking that the guy who was the 20th recruit in prior classes is going to be the 15th guy in this class.  And as you said, the top 2-3 guys in those classes simply don't exist in this incoming class.
