I don't even know who else is considering Stanford beyond Higgins at this point.

Stanford REALLY needs a Safety and I see nobody.  

My biggest disappointments:

- LB Kane Patterson (Clemson)
- LB JD Bertrand (Notre Dame)
- CB Trent McDuffie (UW likely)
- RB Kenan Christon (USC)
- DL Tymon Mitchell (Georgia)

These are all guys it seems like Stanford had a shot to land.

He would have been a nice get of course, but as soon as I saw he was considering Arkansas (arguably the worst program in the SEC right now), I didn't believe he would deviate from the family history there. So not as disappointing for me as missing on the others.

a '19 gap year at QB, Miller, Dean and Thibodeaux lead my recruiting disappointments.  losing Bertrand to USB as a walk-on is a head-scratcher.

on closing the class, I hope for Justin Reid late type offers, but I fear they'll be more along the lines of Tyler/Segina/Dreyer type reaches.

Good summary. Besides safety Stanford really needs more DL, especially ones that can play on the interior.

Overall good quality in this class but the numbers are a real concern. Stanford can accomodate a class of 22-24 and they likely will finish well short of that number.

FWIW 247Sports confirms he does not have an offer to ND. You should see the offer list he does have.  Incredible.
Last time I heard of something like this happening was back in the 60's when Brian Dowling (the BD of Doonesbury fame) turned down the whole Big Ten to go to Yale.
Interesting note on Dowling. He was a star QB and a star DB in high school who still holds the Ohio HS record for career interceptions. He won every HS and college game until the last one he played in, a 29-29 tie with Harvard. Harvard scored on a last minute drive to tie the game. When asked why he didn't put his star offensive players (Dowling and Calvin Hill) in to stop Harvard's last drive the coach said he didn't want the players who were replaced to remember their Yale football careers in that fashion. Shows you the Ivy League's attitude towards football, I guess.

Admissions has pretty set criteria already AFAIK. I don't believe it's gotten stricter. There is always a small group of guys every year who "push the boundaries."

a couple were on the boundaries -- one needed a retake and opted not to take it.  Miller was admitted and still said yes to tosu.  Dean was a 4.0 kid.  Bertrand a 4.0 as well.  Thibodeaux is/was on that end of the bell curve too.

It seems recently there's been 1 admitted recruit a year who chooses to go somewhere else (read: a football factory). Jeffrey McCulloch to Texas, Dax Hollifield to VT, Elijah Molden to Washington, Harry Miller to OSU.

Unfortunately not every 4.0 student is gonna choose Stanford, for a zillion different possible reasons.

FWIW 247Sports currently ranks us as third in the Pac-12, 22 in the nation.

Not great, but not horrible either.

I just looked at the class rankings on 24/7.  I don't know how many uncommitted recruits are left, but if things hold, the North-South divide will continue.  The top three ranked teams are Oregon, Washington, and Stanford.  Out of the top 7 teams, five are in the North; only OSU ranked lower than 7th.

And WTH happened to UCLA?

I would be shocked if USC doesn't finish ahead of Stanford when the 2019 class is all said and done, maybe even by this time next week.

You're probably right, although Higgins (assuming we sign him) should give us a nice boost. He would be one of our top 2-3 recruits.
