RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 04-18-2024

Good game tonight. 5-0 win, Webb gets the win, Jung Hoo Lee now batting .282, OBP .326. and Flores and Yaz each knocked in two runs. They only struck out four times. Hope Yaz is waking up.

Best game they have played this year.  Some terrific defense (Yaz made two nice plays, Lee a nice running catch, Ahmed a couple nice plays) along with great pitching (Webb gave up singles to first two hitters then retired 19 in a row.  Third straight game he’s pitched through the 7th). Plus a late 4 run inning.

I’ll take a lot more of these.

Montgomery fired him. Hopefully Snell is closer to ending his quasi-Spring Training. Gallen and Kelly go on the weekend. Tough sledding ahead.

Yep.  However, he was one of Boras’ Big Four that caused all the late signing anxiety this year.

SF has Snell, Harrison, Hicks.  Three good matchups.  Now is the time to get things headed in the right direction.

Snell getting lit up again. Five earned in less than five innings. Really, really poor thus far. But at least he brought his ERA down from 12 plus to 11 plus!

Another injury for Joey Bart.  Apparently he was hit in the head by a home run ball in batting practice while catching in the bullpen.  Dude is cursed.

I feel bad for Joey. He's been crushing the ball, but he's only been in three games. The other backup catcher has only been in one game. Their starting catcher has caught 17 games and is hitting .182 with a .524 OPS.

I think Snell is getting close. Next outing, he'll be terrific. Still think he's a really good pickup. And despite Harrison giving up three runs in 4 innings today, I think he'll do well.

BTW, Giants had their highest hit total of the year today, 16 hits. Bailey 4/4 and almost hit for the cycle; Lee, Wade, Yaz two hits apiece. Ahmed had a hit, at .292.

Walker and Stanford's Miller struck out two each in one inning pitch, and closer Doval struck out all three. The Rogers brothers allowed one hit in two innings between them. Nice day at the yard, today.

One of the best five pitcher five inning relief performances I can  remember. They got through the fifth through eighth inning on a total of 41 pitches. That’s impressive to say the least.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 04-23-2024

Random comments:

- The rookies (Miller, Roupp, Avila, Teng) in the bullpen are performing very poorly. The vets (Rogers twins, Walker, Hjelle) doing well. On the fence about Doval.
- For the above reason, the Giants acquired Mitch White, ex-Bellarmine & Santa Clara pitcher. Also ex-Dodger from Farhan's time there. Had a good ERA with the Dodgers, not so good with the Blue Jays. Here's hoping.
- Nice win the other day, 5-2. Giants have won 4 of 6.
- Giants attendance is 11th in MLB at 31k per game.
- Despite all the free agent spending, Giants payroll is "only" 9th in MLB.

Actually think Miller‘s been pitching pretty well. A little inconsistent. But prior to his last outing, he pitched five consecutive scoreless games in which he’d given up no hits and struck out nine over five innings. He has great stuff if he can just have decent command, he’s gonna be a nice addition.

Agreed. 7 strikeouts, no walks in his last five appearances (five innings) and he's only given up two hits and one line drive in 17 batters. He's about to be my favorite Stanford alum Giant. Little bit concerned about Slater. Not too concerned about Tristan Beck, I think he'll come back strong.

Roupp has pitched well enuf also. Teng already sent down. Avila allows too many on base. He has good minor league record, but doesn't have a consistent out pitch in the bigs. Plus, he's pitching on the corners and is too often in ball three territory.

Roupp was sent down today. Webb pitched great, has pitched 19 consecutive scoreless innings, 3-1 on the season. Giants won 5-1. Yaz, Conforto, Estrada all have two hits, only 7 strikeouts total (alarmingly, Soler had three of them). Doval was credited with a save...I thought saves were only in three-run-lead-or-less situations. Giants are 12-13, just two back of the Dodgers.

5-1 when he came with two on.  One definition of a save is: when the reliever comes into a game and the on deck hitter is the tying or lead/winning run and, of course, finishes the game in a victorious manner. Thus a save for Doval.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Giants - 04-24-2024

Snell to IL.  So much for the notion that a pitcher can walk in off the street and be ready to face major league hitters.  He should never have been permitted to pitch for SF without first going to the minors to build up his strength.

No wonder Zaidi did not receive a single vote in a poll of top baseball execs (selecting the top baseball team leaders) in The Athletic this morning.  In addition to the many fans who believe he is not top decision-maker material, his peers think the same.

Seemed to work okay for the D-backs Montgomery. . . .
