I didn’t know EcK’s number so I looked it up. What I discovered (in addition to his #) is the A’s have not retired any numbers from their Philadelphia-era. Weird. You would think Connie Mack would have had an honorary designation (like Walter Haas) or that Al Simmons (among other players) would have had their numbers retired.
It's really interesting. The Philadelphia Athletics had some of the greatest players in baseball history play for them: Lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, Eddie Collins, Mickey Cochrane; but evidently the Oakland policy is that that the franchise's history begins with their move to Oakland, and that the Philadelphia and Kansas City eras are a separate thing.
Seems strange. Foxx, #3 (also wore #2), Grove, #10; Cochrane wore #2 (also #3), Al Simmons, #7. Don't know Collins.

Collins retired in 1930 so I don't think he wore a number as a player, but if the Athletics were honoring players from that era he would be recognized in some fashion alongside Foxx, Grove, et al, the way the Giants display Mathewson and McGraw just with their names and "NY".
Interestingly, Foxx's number isn't retired by either the Athletics or Red Sox.
It's clear that the As have decided to sever the Philadelphia/Kansas City portion of their history for some reason.

Bobbbbbbb....... Grim went the other way Yanks to KC. He had been the AL ROY winning 20 a few years before.

Roger Maris, Clete Boyer and Ralph Terry were the biggest acquisitions by the Yankees from the Athletics, all three were important players on the 1961 team that won 109 games and the World Series.

DC, Bobbbb and I were children of the early 50’s. By the time Maris got to the Yanks they had lapsed into boredom.
Boyer told a great story to us in an MLB black background interview while he was an A’s coach. He was sure that they would walk McCovey with right-righty (Terry vs Orlando) next. He said that he was terrified that Cepeda would hit a rocket into the hole. Quite an admission for one of the best ever third baseman to make. He said that he couldn’t believe that Terry could talk Casey into pitching to Willie Mac. The rest is history.
Somewhere in the MLB Network cellars are hundreds of original 3/4 and Beta interviews with baseball immortals telling stories that have been screened many times over and some stories that the establishment will never let be told to the public.

I still can't believe they didn't walk McCovey. They need to transfer those tapes to digital media, I'm sure there's great stuff there.

Looked it up. Interesting. I would have thought that Christy Mathewson would have had more Opening Day starts. He only started Opening Day four times in his 17 year career, in which he had a 373-188 record, third most wins all time. Red Ames started more Opening Days than Matthewson did. Other OD starters during his career, Jeff Tesreau, Iron Man Joe McGinnity, Dummy Taylor and Rube Marquard started Openign Day before Matthewson. At least Mathewson was 49-19 against the Dodgers (or Robins as they were known then).

Koufax only played for one team. Look at the Roberts answer above. Plus he was affected by the Bonus Baby rule and had to be kept on the Dodger roster in 1954. I don't think he ever pitched in the minors. Drysdale started the '58 opener and was beaten by the Giants so Sandy never had enough years (retired after '66).
The last answer has to be somebody like Nolan Ryan or Jim Bunning who pitched for more than one team.
