Maybe, but that first walk should have been called the last out of the inning

Truth.

Some bad karma, too. Two out of the last three days, my wife walks in just as we give up two runs. The first was softball against OK, now tonight. Literally, first batter each time; first pitch against OK, at least it took a couple of pitches tonight. . . .

Need some timely hitting to avoid burning what's left of this shallow bullpen

also shocked that Penn is in control of that regional

ugh....

Three run double by A&M

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - JJJ - 06-03-2023

If we had the 6’4” Bowser playing 3B, results might’ve been different. (Not that Esky had that option.)

Hindsight is 20/20, but i wouldn't have pitched Matthews against SJSU. Ace against the weakest team in the regional never made sense.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - StanfordMatt - 06-03-2023

It’s easy to second guess but Esquer needed to make the call to Bruno with the bases loaded. Season on the line and we needed strikeouts in that situation. Gotta bring in one of the best strikeout guys in the country.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Hieronymus - 06-03-2023

That was about as bad of an inning you could play on both sides of the inning for Stanford

That decision surprised me too. Roxy tried to explain away that was how much Esky respects SJSU.

This is the first Stanford baseball game I have seen this year, and I was stunned to see our team ERA is nearly 6 (and then even more stunned that we got a top 8 seed). The trend doesn't look very good in the last three years with the pitching; the Esquer era actually started off pretty well in terms of pitching/team ERA. I get the analytics of baseball have changed the game, and that compared to softball, the wins above replacement a pitcher can provide is lower, but at some point, you have to have at least adequate/mediocre pitching. And sadly, our team ERA/the performance I have seen so far says we are not there.

I don't know how the NIL works at Stanford though I gather Stanford donors are participating. That said, I'd vote for a sum of money being offered to our top two pitching recruits. I gather they are likely to each be drafted early and may appreciate some financial incentive thrown their way to come to Stanford. Man do we need an infusion of good pitching.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - StanfordMatt - 06-03-2023

I don’t understand the use of O’Harran and Meier. Where is Bruno??? There is no tomorrow if we lose tonight. Last year was a fun ride going through the lose’s bracket but this team isn’t beating Fullerton and A&M twice with this pitching depth. It’s win or go back to the dorms tonight.

With a 3 run lead, I wouldn't use Bruno.  He needs to be fresh for tomorrow.

Team is top 5 in batting and maybe top 50 (towards bottom of top 50) in pitching.  We always knew this team didn't have the pitching depth alone to go deep (no pun intended)

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - StanfordMatt - 06-03-2023

I guess I just think we have a better chance of scoring 3+ runs in the 9th than we do of winning 3 in a row tomorrow and Monday.

I don't see this team winning 3 in a row, unfortunately.  Do they even have enough quality pitchers to last a competitive 3 games?

Geez, guy, tell her to take a few hours at Nordstrom.

Live by the long ball, die by the long ball.  See you at noon Sunday.

Historically, Stanford has a pretty good record of winning in situations like this. But history is a bad predicter of the future. See you tomorrow at noon.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - PVTree - 06-04-2023

Another game where our weakest link (imo), shortstop, affected the game... This time with the bat which had been alright instead of the glove.

Twice up with the bases loaded and can't drive in a run. In the fifth, good aluminum on the ball but directly to their shortstop for an easy doubleplay. Plus, the last out of the game.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - cardfan77 - 06-04-2023

Cobb appears to be lackadaisical at SS and some of his at bats have been mind boggling throughout the season. He has taken many ill-advised swings.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - norcard10 - 06-04-2023

I don't get it.  What starting pitching is left after Dugan? I get this is do or die, but at this point we might see Montgomery redux and that's a movie i don't want a sequel to.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - StanfordMatt - 06-04-2023

Tom Emanski would have a heart attack watching this team. Just terrible fundamental baseball all year long. Terrible defense, poor base running and too many free passes from the pitching staff. It’s a shame that such a potent offense was wasted by these factors.

Eager has gotta go and Esquer needs to find a way to clean things up.

Maybe cobb needs to go instead
